You have to coax them out.
What were the phrase from that old Kevin Costner movie? 'Build it and they will come'? Something like that.

Thank yoi ao much foe that tip! I’m finding it hard to get good feedback. i real appreciate that littlebug! I had not considered that and its a great point. but there is brick on the center and bottom right ans left. Do you suggest I paint all center brick one collor ans the rest of the house another? still having hard time finding a portico I like, ans smaller window in center throws mw of.

I think always best to eave the exterior until all the interior changes have been made and in this case also the addition. Often interior changes move or change windows for instance . I loive this type of look with brick it is perfect compliment to the red and if you like that cottage look the trim and siding all the same is a very nice look. I do agree the addition needs to be designed to look like it has always been part of the original so an architect can help with that and would be IMO worth the money.In the photo notice the garage door style too I do not like that mix of brick and stone so maybe trade the stone for either match brick or siding when you get to the exterior . Please come back with the addition plans and that will help us help you.

Square would be my choice, to help ground the space and for practical/accessible reasons. Try taping out different sizes to see what would work best. Sherry, yes, possums like watermelon... doesn't everyone? ;) I took Nimbus, but was really a little more excited to get the gelding, because he was a Quarter Horse. I knew he wasn't going to make it tho, because I opened his lips to get a quick look at his teeth, and I saw his tongue was blue grey, when it should have been pink. But it was late at night.... a terrible rain storm going on, and I was afraid he would die in a stall...and the practical issue of how I was going to get him out of there. And he was dead and stiff at daybreak. Of course I felt bad for him. I would liked for him to make it and have a better life, the rest of his life. But, he was too far gone. He had traveled over 250 miles that night, and I am thankful he didn't die in the trailer. Three other horses in there, including Nimbus, and 2 others going to another person. Doll, the really skinny mare, was bought by a FB friend of mine who lives in California. She wanted to save her, but couldn't take her, herself. She is in Oklahoma, and my friend had her picked up by a woman who does quarantine for kill pen horses. She has been seen by a vet twice, and is slowly gaining weight. She didn't know who she could get to take the mare....but she knew I have rehabbed several senior horses, so she asked if I would take her. It is hard for me to turn down a horse. I don't have to pay for anything....she is hiring a shipper....but, of course I will pay taking care of her the rest of her life, and it is expensive. But ...I have taken care of senior horses most of my life. So, I don't think much about that. Ninapearl, I have horses that like water like that. When I got Bane, one of my other kill pen horses, he had a bad skin infection and the vet prescribed medicated baths for him. He totally flipped out when I tried to bathe him. I wasn't going to get killed bathing him, because I knew once he got healthy, it would clear up. Later....a few weeks later...he had calmed down and I found out he loves a bath. They are so stressed when they get here from the way they are handled at auction and at the kill pens, plus being taken from all familiar to them, their buddies.....it is hard on horses, and few people know or care. Thank you for saving the old mare. I have done that at auctions too.

There seems to be more Aussies here than kiwis,-me! But didn't the roses look good around the race fences,breed better horses than sports persons don't we. Heather

Thanks Spike - your a darling. Now we have somewhere we can swap plants and seeds without breaking any laws;>) Hope more of us flightless gardeners appear soon.

Kia Ora friends. This is exciting to have a kiwi forum. I have tried to make contact with Australian gardeners - but have found it a bit tricky. So glad we now have a place to meet, talk, and exchange etc. Gardening is such a passion for so many kiwis and now that the Ellerslie Flower Show is in full swing we are all motivated to get out and get planting. So many wonderful plants grow here - we are very fortunate. I am a gardener leaning towards the sub tropical look - and after coming home from a stint in Cairns,Qld, am so impressed with what grows there! Good luck and happy gardening folks. Kiwilad.
