its a little more strange to do, but another thing i have done is to grab up seeds from plants that i see for sale while i am shopping/browsing a nursery. you have to have some good timing, so its just a bit of luck to actually be there at a time of ripe seeds, but if youre lucky enough to find some, i say snag them up ! the plants want those seeds getting spread about =) most nurseries are quite open with few employees, and probably wouldnt give a fig about you snagging some seeds from there older plants that are leftovers or whatevers...but yeah discretely is probably advised =P and even if they did mind would just let you know or whatever. even more weird is to dumpster thrive, by rescuing plants that nurseries and other throw away into the trash. especially grocery stores! or other big mega $tores...they throw away quite a few plants at the end of their seasonal sales of plants. since its not their main thin, they really dont care what happens to them, and cull out quite a few by tossing into the dumpster. in many places dumpster thriving is frowned upon, but i have even taken to defending my right to rescue them for the trash...and other places will have leftovers, rejects and others for extremely cheap, especially if you are a bold haggler... like a buck or 2 for a reject...or just to take a stack. so if your polite and ask at grocery/megastore/walmart /big faceless corporate name here/ the employees also dont usually give a fig...especially if they do throw them in trash. and arrange to pick up some freebies... and hey your suggestions are great. most gardeners are extremely generous people and love to share their plants. if you ask politely many gardeners are totally open to letting you take cuttings and gather seeds. another good suggestion is to help elders with their gardens. the old mow the lawn for a few bucks in your pocket and even some trade in cuttings/seeds/bulbs/divisions/etc. many older gardeners do not have the back power they used to and can find maintaining once beautiful gardens very difficult...and will deeply appreciate your enthusiasm for the plants and their gardens. this is also a good way to try to get some free space to do community type gardening...many elders would even appreciate the help, especially if they get a share of the produce grown for them along with others..
