I just wonder did gardening influence you to stay in New Zealand? Far away country. Thank you, Milos (pronounced Meelosh).

No, it is the best country in the world bar none. We have the best racehorses too, all that lovely lush green grass.

Ditto on Denninmi's comments on NZ spinach. Germination would likely be very poor, as has been reported by others. I recommend planting in cells as well, with the added step of soaking & pre-sprouting before planting. Soak the seeds in water over night (always use sterile water if possible), then drain excess water & keep moist until the first signs of sprouting appear. I keep the still-wet seeds in a covered bowl, then pluck out the seeds as they sprout & plant them. I should say "seeds" in quotes, since they are not really single seeds, but seed clusters. There is another advantage to planting in pots - the sprouts look like weeds! Some who report no germination might have pulled them out by mistake. NZ spinach will sprawl quite a bit; it forms thick clumps even in my short summers. The plants in the photo below are 12" apart. I even had some volunteers appear under one of my squash patches, and they were quite happy in the shade, spreading to 3' across! Of all of the "spinaches" (Egyptian, Malabar, etc.) NZ spinach is the most spinach-like in flavor & texture, IMO. The yield can be enormous. It has a fairly high oxalic acid content, though... a little higher than regular spinach.

oh mercy I've done it and done it.........my garden in Chicago was a 10-year project of learning and loving. I'd got it to where I could get an armful of flowers weekly and beautiful dirt, compost, etc. Poof, off to Israel. No midwest gardners needed; now I was in for no snow, no frost, sheeting floods in winter and summer hell drought. Ten years I terraced, tried, composted, grew fabulous lavender and rosemary, learned Middle east garden on a 45 degree angle tricks. DG says move, poof we move. I took very few of the old plants with me, and most of those died, and here I am starting anew. Saw old garden this week: completely ignored and in disrepair. New house, very little garden open space, mostly room for containers and a few perennials, lots of shade (great for cooling, not so good for growing). Again, I must still find a place for the compost pile, dig and see what kind of soil I have (rocky, no worms, millions of slugs) figure out where the sun is likely to be in seasons I haven't been here for yet, and put nearly everything in pots and move them around to see where they are happiest before I plant them, which will take at least a whole year of seasons before I can say I understand how to garden here. At which point DG has informed me that we will probably stay here for a "few" years, and then move again so the investment in the house is worth it. I have left more fully functioning gardens, after years of work, than I care to think about. But, I taught myself how to garden, what works/doesn't in a new country. I NEED to garden, and though I sometimes seethe with envy for gardens that I can work and grow for more that a decade, it's the process that I really need. Playing in the dirt. Plant stuff, have fun, learn, get dirty. Move, give as much as you can away, bless the garden that held you, and move on to a new embrace. Start again. Batya

Fawnridge, there are too many great gardens on the east coast of Oz to mention all. And apologies in advance to anybody's garden that does not get a mention here. Cairns - Wyambeel Arboretum, run by Peter Sargeant - an absolute must! An hour drive north of Cairns, in the Daintree Rainforest, near Mosman. Also a doctor named Arden Dearden in Cairns, has a huge collection of tropical plants from worldwide. Brisbane - The Olive Branch (thousands of broms) and Roma St Parklands (as Rick suggested) Gold Coast - several private brom collections. Sunshine Coast - too many to mention, but some great ones. Sydney - Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens - agree with Rick. Also the Royal Botanic gardens right on Sydney harbour - beautiful venue. Melbourne - don't know. South of Gold Coast - my humble abode! :) (about 2 hour drive from G.C.) Kathleen Henderson has a great cactus/succulent garden, an hour drive from here - I could escort you. Also, a beautiful garden 10 minutes from here, owned by my good friends Gloria and Tom Dunbar. Up the road from me is Protestors' Falls and Nightcap National Park - beautiful easy walk to the falls - fantastic rainforest canopy. Do you want to see general gardens, or specialist ones - like natives, or specific exotics? If you give me enough notice, I could line up some appointments and introductions for you - especially gardens in and around Brisbane area. I assume you will be hiring a car? Axis, the only really large city in New Zealand is Auckland. If you settle in another city, it would be moderately sized. Perhaps the capital Wellington would suit you. If you want to be warm, you would probably prefer the North Island to the South Island. Be prepared for both costs and incomes to be lower than you are used to in Massachusetts. I have been thinking about New Zealand a lot the past few weeks. Our trip was last January but I find the images of the landscape persist in my mind. I'm considering another trip in a couple of years. Perhaps we'll hike the Routeburn Track, since we hiked the Milford Track before. We are planning our next hiking in Slovenia but somehow I'm not committed to that idea. It seems silly to go back to NZ when there are so many places I have yet to see, but somehow I'm tempted. Paula

Well, well, well, i know i know, you are very right! Everyone loves their native place, but it is frightening for me to think that I would be able to survive in New Zealand. I was born and raised in the Balkan (South Eastern Europe), the country where 1st World War started.
Back to gardening; what do you grow there?
Do you grow; apples, pears, plums, peaches, hazel nut trees.
What about figs? Are there some rivers in New Zealand.
Is it expensive to buy 3- 5 acres of land and house. Would it be possible to have a teaching job (math and physics) and live in the country side? I know I am asking too much, but I love gardening. Thank you Milos (Meelos).

We can grow all those fruit you mention and we do have rivers, and we do need teachers who will work in the country towns.

Hi again Milos.
In case you visit this page again, land and house prices vary enormously in New Zealand depending on where you want to buy. Some of the smaller towns are very cheap to buy in, but it can be harder to re-sell again if you want to move later.
The median sale price in New Plymouth is currently NZ$134,000. In Napier, it is NZ$160,000. Whangarei is NZ $158,000. Wanganui is NZ$62,000. These are all smallish cities/large towns in the North Island. (Depending on how you count size!) In the South Island, Nelson sells at around NZ$155,000. Timaru, NZ$84,000. Dunedin, NZ$106,000.
The larger cities are generally more expensive. The average for all of New zealand is $186,000, but of course the range over-all is both much higher and lower.
Teachers, especially in maths and science are needed here, as kiwi oz says.

Yes we get lots of Auzzie plants. Grevilleas, prostanthera, Murrya. Boronias and so many more, Banksia and of course Acacia, Callistemon and I have a beautiful Backhousia growing and a tree fern that I forget the name of.
