NYC multiple Nursery Distination - Brooklyn

.Well.. here in NYC we've been without too much gardening..aside from the farmers market in Union Square...

well Chelsea gardens is movinging to Brooklyn opening in Red Hook.. near Fairway..the end of April.. if this will happen...after seeing them into and out of and returning to...not to open after all..on Hudson Street..who knows

Another nursery will be surely opening there in Red Hook also... only a block or so away.. Liberty Sunset Nursery.. I believe.. and it will have a gigantic stock of plants.. and huge selection of native pottery from Columbia..

apart of an expanded waterfront nursery development.. across from the water Taxi... so come on the boat [ or overland ]and buy the container garden.. eat on the pier... enjoy the sunset views.. of the harbor and it's activity..backdrop... the Statue of Liberity ..and have plants galore..to buy...and piles of [ BIG ] blooming containers landscaped throughout the area.. for viewing...a new park with a tropical theme... unheard of here to fore... have Steves Key Lime Pie..at tables.. activities on the barge..the hydroponics center.. instructional activities.. a real garden focused corner of Brooklyn opening...the middle of April..

Remember you heard it here first...

well here is the link to Liberty Sunset Greenhouses..and their site which is just getting in gear before their grand opening.. They say they are to be the full featured garden center in NYC...don't guess it will be too difficult.. as many features are lacking in the ones we do have...

Well..my favorite little local nursery was the Gowanus Nursery..it used to be on Third St here in Brooklyn.. but I'd noticed it had closed..but it moved to Red Hook also..not asbunched as the other two.. t sits on the way in to the others.....enclosed is the link with a map to their new place... I was by and got an early tour . they've a much bigger space... more pots... stone planters.. and lots more plants... they are a must see stop on the way into the Red Hook Garden Meca...come early..stay late.. but don't miss this one... the best.. Forsythias, as has been mentioned, are not "neat and tidy" bushes. I don't know enough about your zone to make specific suggestions...there are some rhodedendron cultivars that maintain a rounded shape. I don't know of ANY perennial that will stay in constant bloom for 2-3 months at a time in NY. I don't know any that will do that in NC. What you are describing is an annual. Constant bloom--and then done at frost. It isn't too late to plant any annual--and that includes impatiens. Feed them and they will grow. If you like plants that are flat on top--and want a lot of color--zinnias might work for you. They are a classic bedding plant. They do require some maintenance--and do best with a little dead-heading. Another classic choice would be geraniums--which also do best with regular dead-heading. How much hands on work do you want to do? Now, there are probably a number of perennial plants for your zone that will cycle through bloom and rest stages...or have a long bloom period that can be paired with another perennial to pick up as the first fades...ask your gardener for their latin names, and google them. Then you will know if they are the sort of tidy plants you seem to prefer. But you will be doing both of you a favor if your gardener can come up with some sort of list that YOU can then research. I am not very familiar with your area, so hesitate to suggest specific perennials. (Which are much fussier than annuals, as they have to survive winters.) melanie

According to the list published in the back of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's "Native Alternatives to Invasive Plants", 2006 edition, Paulonia tomentosa is listed as invasive in CT, DC, GA, KY, LA, MD, NC, NJ, OR, PA, TN, VA and WV. The list is drawn from the WeedUS: Database of Plants invading Natural Areas in the USA, and printed with permission of the Plant Conservation Alliance. In the last several years, more states may have listed it as invasive. They suggest, as an alternative, that catalpas or Kentucky coffee trees be planted instead. I don't necessarily say that such a listing is definitive, but will say that since the tree is listed as widely as it is, I rather think it poses a problem. While the 'Americana' cultivar may in fact not be invasive, I would want to see more documentation than that of the developer - sometimes what is perceived is what is most favorable. Keith, 3 years is not enough time to say for sure that a tree is or isn't invasive - mostly it takes longer than that for seeds to be spread around and the true nature of a plant to show up. That it IS listed in CT would seem to say that cold climates aren't a check on it.

Hi Jim, Thank you for the detailed account of these two sweet plants. I have been to a talk about what triggers blooming, and it is mostly photo-periods. For some tropical plants and bulbs it could be the onset of dry season or wet season. One consensus is that there seems to be no "blooming hormone" so to speak, and a plant will bloom when it is mature and well-nourished. Since your fiddlewood is healthy and mature, maybe you can adjust your watering schedule to simulate habitat rain pattern. Many plants do bloom better when they are stressed a little bit. I am growing quite a few plants that are not hardy in my area. One Artabotrys is already over 6' tall and I wonder if I will be able to see my Cananga odorata seedling bloom before it gets too tall. I guess we just have to accept that these plants will only provide a shorter than normal period of enjoyment out of its native range, but certain plants can last quite some time. For example, I saw many Osmanthus fragrans f. aurantiacus in half-barrel containers with 4"-diameter trunks in gardens in Beijing. They must be at least 20 years old and they bloom reliably at very manageable sizes.

Haha Ben, I never really relied on the customer resolution center. I tried calling once, it's basically an outsourced center in Asia, and half their advice given to me, all could be done directly to the seller through ebay messages. But you got a point though regarding reviews, some sellers really do value their profile reviews, the higher the rating # the more reliable the chances you get a refund or replacement. Then again, there is not harm taking more pictures. Hellkitchenguy - The farmer's market is at Union Square. Every Mon-Wed-Fri-Sat during the summer, and I think Wed - Sat during the winter. Try exploring out of the flower district, sometimes they can get quite pricey. When you get a chance, you should check out westelm, they have very nice succulents all imported from San Fran, and there is even a nice florist selling succulents by the trays right across the street from the West Elm at 18th st. My last bet would be Lowe's in Brooklyn, if you are there at the right time when they just restocked, you might find a bucket load of goodies and VERY affordable prices. Check out my linkhere

I always like visiting nurseries,who knows what excuse I'll find to buy a plant. not too many here in manhattan.
will visit soon, seems like a nice daytrip from Harlem.

hi there gordon...thanks for the info. I'm heading over the Liberty next weekend even tho' they won't be open 'til end of the month. The guy was very warm. Would love to duplicate that fountain on their website. Hope they have a good array of elephant ears...best, mina

Dimitr's in Harlem moved to the Bronx. Not hard to get to from the 3 train. Driving isn't bad either, take the Madison Ave bridge, go strait 3 or 4 blocks, turn right onto 3rd Ave, keep to the right to avoid the 3rd Ave bridge approach and go strait onto the road running alongside the bridge.
