Renga lilies - growing from seed (pot or ground?)

Has anyone grown renga renga lilies from seed? Can i put them directly in the ground or should I start them in pots first?

I grew these from seed I bought when I was in New Zealand in the fall of 2002. I started them in plug trays in the late fall 2003. I had a heat mat under them and kept them in my green house over the winter. This was my first real attempt at starting seeds and almost all of them survived! I am wondering how hardy they are? How much cold/frost will they tolerate and still come back as a perennial?

These things are tough!! I planted real small plants from root-trainers,their first winter they were snowed on, frosted and it was very wet.They flowered profusely in Dec and I cut off those stems and biffed them over the bank--a few weeks later they flowered again, those first stems had ripened the seeds and it seemed as if all those seeds struck. This was on clay, windswept Wellington hilltop and 3 years later it is difficult to walk down that bank as the arthropodiums are so thick. I have now moved to the Auckland area and I pulled out several blobs of seedlings, seperated them into small cells and voila! there are 200 arthropodiums for the new garden. No special treatment at all not even fancy seedling mix!! Cheers, Sandra

I watched a video on growing Cannas from seed. I live in Ont. ..so I waited until the pods turned brown..almost black... https://youtu.be/ocyDPVSAD3M I opened them and saved the seeds in a dry container. In March, I took sandpaper, and sanded each seed SLIGHTLY ...just until I just saw the white part inside. I then put them in a clear glass of water in a warm place until I could see a little white "bud" protruding...this could take 1 week, so be patient! Plant them in light soil, just below the top, under ANY kind of light...I used a regular florescent bulb. (You don't need anything fancy, or sunlight)Keep the soil moist, not wet. When they get bigger, take them outside during the day, when the warm weather permits to "harden" them. (Gets them used to being outside) Transfer outside when frost is finished...usually around June 1st. Mine bloomed the first year! The seeds were from a red canna...so far, they are YELLOW!!! I'm very pleased and excited! =)

Exactly! We're talking about the same lily. I've let the seeds both fall and plant themselves naturally and planted in pots for redistribution elsewhere in the gardens. I see you've got enough bulbils to pick off (now is fine, they're ready) to experiment both ways. Although they're very hardy, when I plant some in pots I bury the pot in the ground in an out of the way place - mainly just to keep track of them until they're ready to transplant. When the bulbils fall naturally around the mother plant, they will eventually form a cluster which makes for a spectacular blooming show. The only thing problematic with transplanting them in the first growing season is they're fragile and you'll probably end up breaking the bulb away from the new leaf sprout - the little bit of foliage is needed for the bulb to replenish itself for the next season. So, I've just left them potted until the second or third year when they're good and strong enough to handle. Being crowded in even a relatively small pot doesn't hurt them. If you're really new to lilies - you know that late in the fall when the stalk of the lily pictured above has become yellow/brown and woody you can cut it down at ground level or just slightly above - the yellowing/browning means it has done its job of feeding the bulb for next season's growth.

If you get one of those polystyrene boxes used for shipping grapes that are about three inches deep, about 12 wide x 16 long you can add extra holes - about as fat as a finger - and then put in around an inch of potting medium over the bottom. Mark out a grid pattern so you end up with three across and four down the length - 12 seedlings in all. You can do a row and fill as you go. Fill up to nearly the brim of the box and water lightly. You can add about half a measure of sharp grit to four measures of potting mix. Or you can plant your seedlings individually into 6" pots at this stage. Later they will need something larger, however. Lilies aren't partial to superphosphate. They get brown bits on their leaves from the fluoride. Many of the lilies have a set of basal roots which store the food for them to get started in the new season. Once they get growing, though, they form stem roots ABOVE the bulb. That's why they get planted quite deeply. It's those roots that support the stem, leaves and buds. When they come up next year you can use a sparing amount of slow release fertiliser to help them grow on and form bigger bulbs. You might not see flowers for three years. As the bulbs get larger you might want to plant them out into a special area free of perennial weeds. They like the edges of deciduous shrubberies/woodland for the dappled light and leaf mould but they don't like to compete with surface roots from trees such as maples.

Hi Andy just wondering how you went with your Renga Renga seeds? I just bunged mine into a small pot of basic potting soil and kept them moist. They were in good light but probably only had direct winter sun for about an hour or so a day. The pot was crammed with seedlings. They all seemed to have shot and I have just seperated them three weeks ago into small sections of about 6 or 7 seedlings, they have had no set backs and are flourishing on. They are in an area away from frosts. The big parent plants are under gums so frost doesn't get them either. Like Raine I made sure I sprinkled snail/slug bait on them. If you don't like to do that you could just put some sawdust around the top of the pot. Oh! almost forgot I also watered them occassionally with weak fish emulsion. cheers Mrs B

i've just started the seeds in pots a week or 2 ago. How long before they get to a reasonable size and flower??

You may well find that some of them reach flowering size this summer. Just put them in the ground as soon as they are big enough to handle, feed them with a good general fertiliser and watch them grow. Cheers,Sandra

my lilies are in a pot and thriving. should i divide them. can they winter outside. how much sun.

Renga renga are hardy in zones 8-10+. They grow in both sun and shade. They tolerate drought and 'difficult' soils. They live under hungry trees such as sequoia - and thrive.

They don't do well with frost. They are evergreen - and start to flower once they have clumped up. Think of them as being like Hostas, in that regard.

If you are in Massachussets I'd advise growing in a pot - as you would a spider plant - and put it out over the summer. Water when the potting mix is dry to about an inch down. Bring in for winter.

If you use a decorative pot it could be used as you would a feature Hosta in the garden.
