Donna...yes and Rosalie. The photo doesn't do justice to what a mess she is....the first scape is 6" and the second is just 2 so far. There are 2 disfigured blooms trying to open in the middle of the 4 that are open...they are far from what I expected. I did just now go put my nose into the bouquet...ahhhhh....sweetness! ;-) K

If you are moving from a colder area where winter cold checks everything - you will be really excited by how fast things grow. Then you will realise that this goes double for the weeds and despair! Some of the familiar cool-climate plants will probably be hard to grow. However they grow some fantastic plants in Northland. I've never lived and gardened in Northland but grew up in Auckland which is similar. From Dargaville, it isn't far to get to the native forest with the giant kauri (Agathis australis) trees. I recommend a visit - they are fantastic. Not that you will be growing kauri in your greenhouse. But yes, orchids do well. So do many ferns. Also, you won't be too far from Koanga Gardens. They are a big organic garden and sell heirloom seed varieties, mainly vegetables. I'll try and think of some other favourites from the north. Here is a link that might be useful: Koanga Gardens

poncurusguy, I sure hope that this one will grow fast. I heard that FW NZL is a fairly vigorous tree. Unfortunately, there is no rootstock info from FW. Denise, fortunately for me, I live just 1.5-hour drive away from FW and it was not a concern. However, I was worried to receive an unhealthy tree since last NZL September batch was pretty bad but this tree is very healthy looking. Molewacker, a good question about hardiness. Hopefully, someone will know something. I am still thinking whether to inground or container it next summer/fall. I have an interesting microclimate. We are protected by Mount Diablo (fewer cold winds from SF bay and my house is just one mile away from the Delta (temperature control). So, cold California nights are slightly warmer here :)

Beth said that florist roses are really hard as they have an anti-sprout sprayed on them. But when she figured it out, her roses rooted pretty fast around 4 weeks, but she was getting temps in the 90's. The weird thing she said is that they bloom very young, but the bloom isn't it's true color, so don't panic. Fraizer Valley Rose Farm says to gently (very gently) tug on the cutting if it won't give easily, it is rooting. I have now rooted 8 roses, and I pulled on 2 and they seemed to not be rooted, but came up with 1/4 inch roots...so that may take practice.
