Advice to new-New Zealanders...

...I am an avid gardener here in Georgia but am a little worried about keeping it up when I move to the north island next month.

I'll be living in Dargaville, a climate very different from the one I am used to here.

Does anyon e have any tips?

From the zones and weather to local flora and fauna...

Anything!

Gardening is my passion and my darling Kiwi fella is being a dear and building me a grande greenhouse...

...but what to put in it!?!

Dargaville is in the 'sub-tropical' and can get a lot of heavy rain. Summer is often humid but not desperately so.

IMO a big challenge for a northern gardener is weed control; plants those of us further south find kept in reasonable check by cooler winter temperatures live the life of Riley in the north. Wild ginger, smilax, watsonia - all rampant weeds.

Think about growing macadamias and citrus, mountain pawpaw, and bananas. Check out the various heritage plants available in your area, too. And consider using plants such as Clivia and Hibiscus and Tecomanthe out in the garden directly.

If the soil in your area is volcanic in origin - be sure to either wear gloves or use barrier cream to prevent skin cracks.

Expect some fruit and veg varieties to be prone to botrytis and other minor plagues earlier than you'd like.

Glasshouse: hmm. Any ambitions to export orchid flowers to Japan?

If you are moving from a colder area where winter cold checks everything - you will be really excited by how fast things grow. Then you will realise that this goes double for the weeds and despair! Some of the familiar cool-climate plants will probably be hard to grow. However they grow some fantastic plants in Northland.

I've never lived and gardened in Northland but grew up in Auckland which is similar.

From Dargaville, it isn't far to get to the native forest with the giant kauri (Agathis australis) trees. I recommend a visit - they are fantastic. Not that you will be growing kauri in your greenhouse. But yes, orchids do well. So do many ferns.

Also, you won't be too far from Koanga Gardens. They are a big organic garden and sell heirloom seed varieties, mainly vegetables.

I'll try and think of some other favourites from the north.

Ditto on Denninmi's comments on NZ spinach. Germination would likely be very poor, as has been reported by others. I recommend planting in cells as well, with the added step of soaking & pre-sprouting before planting. Soak the seeds in water over night (always use sterile water if possible), then drain excess water & keep moist until the first signs of sprouting appear. I keep the still-wet seeds in a covered bowl, then pluck out the seeds as they sprout & plant them. I should say "seeds" in quotes, since they are not really single seeds, but seed clusters. There is another advantage to planting in pots - the sprouts look like weeds! Some who report no germination might have pulled them out by mistake. NZ spinach will sprawl quite a bit; it forms thick clumps even in my short summers. The plants in the photo below are 12" apart. I even had some volunteers appear under one of my squash patches, and they were quite happy in the shade, spreading to 3' across! Of all of the "spinaches" (Egyptian, Malabar, etc.) NZ spinach is the most spinach-like in flavor & texture, IMO. The yield can be enormous. It has a fairly high oxalic acid content, though... a little higher than regular spinach.

If you are a college student, try to get to Queenstown on the South Island. It is pretty much the adventure activity capital of the place. Lots of stuff for people of any age to do, but a very exciting place full of twenty-somethings. Nice public garden there, too, with a good collection of rampling roses on the fence. Also if you are an experienced backpacker you might want to consider tramping the Milford Sound. They have good accomodations for the self-guided hikers, and that is much less expensive than the guided tours. This is probably the chance of a lifetime. I envy you getting to see NZ at this point in your life. I found it to be amazingly beautiful, a landscape that will fill your memory for years to come. NZ is very fussy about species in, species out, so you probably won't be able to take any plant material out with you and you definitely will not be able to bring any in. If your hiking boots aren't clean enough to meet their standards they will sterilize them for you, honest. They are not kidding about this. They have had serious problems with invasive exotic species, both plant and animal. Paula

But just in case, what would happen if it turns out it's not? Based on the description I think you're ok. Annual ryegrass is just that, annual, which means it would die off after 1 season. It also doesn't look that great, it's mostly used as temporary ground cover. Was my de-thatching & airating a waste of time & money given the amount of soil & seed laid down? Probably. Typically what you would do is kill the existing grass with glyphosate, run a dethatcher to rake up the dead grass after a couple of weeks, then seed. A light covering with compost or peat moss will help keep the seed moist. Will the buried fescue be a problem for the lawn? I don't think so. Worst that can happen is some of it pokes back through, but it was struggling as it was, I doubt it will successfully outcompete the ryegrass. Do you think I've put down the right Rye grass? I think you did, based on the product description. Lastly, i'm concerned that my soil is uneven. I was going to hire a roller but i googled advice & found everything was saying not to. Besides I didn't have time with all the last minute camp prep. Now that I'm back it's been around 10 days since seeding & there's heaps of new shoots everywhere. What can i do? Is it too late to address? I'm glad to hear the grass is germinating well. When it reaches 3 inches, cut it down to 2 inches. Keep it at 2" for another 30 days after the first mow. Mow often. When the grass is about 45 days old you can start experimenting with higher or lower heights of cut to find the one you prefer. Ryegrass can take cutting heights of under 1". Once it's safe to walk on, fertilize weekly for the first 8 weeks using a quarter of the monthly bag rate. So if the fertilizer bag says 2 lbs/month, fertilize weekly with 0.5 lbs. Regarding the leveling, it's too late now. Let the grass establish, and once it's got good roots you can cut it real short and do some leveling with sand. You don't want to completely bury the grass, so it may take multiple rounds a few months apart to get it to level. Here's a great video on leveling.

Bob I think that most people get to many varieties and burn out on the associate problems and end up quitting. I know of several past people who lost power to their green house and lost 30 to 40 trees. They looked for more trees with advice from us and then left. These trees are expensive. If I decide to quit citrus I will let you all know and why. When I first started I posted a lot with picture and a lot of other people got mad and they let me know in very rude ways. I am still here and Better than 15 of them are gone. It is too bad because they were a real asset to the group Jay We eat them like an orange or mandarin. Gave away 1 each to 4 closest friends. It is well worth growing. I have eaten 45 fruits total from 3 different trees. Steve

Hello! I've just spent my first year here from the UK. We're in Waipu so we'll practically be neighbours!

I'm enjoying all the fruit etc... but the main difference is the SPEED at which things grow! That and the flipping possums eating last year's veggie patch over night (grrrr).

May we recommend the acquisition of a couple of Timms traps for the possums? Off with their heads. And, if you're in a Tb free zone - into the deep freeze for dog tucker, or under the orange trees for fertiliser. Do you grow macadamias in Waipu? Or just head over to Kerikeri for a treat?
