Gardening in New Zealand

I am hoping to visit New Zealand first week in June and I'm hoping you could advise me of any must see gardens?

I realise it's not exactly the peak season for garden viewing but as a business convention tag on, I didn't have much say. I'm going to be footloose for the first week and it will probably be in the South Island, although we later hope to visit the North Island as well. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hi Mrs B--if you can get to Dunedin go to Lanarch castle, it is a lovely restored old garden. In Christchurch there is Hagley Park, out in Riccarton there are some great neighborhood walks, same in Merivale. Out to Akaroa( approx 1hour out of town) there are some very interesting places to visit. Also in Lyttleton and around Governors Bay you are sure to find some good views and places to stop by. In the North there is the Wellington botanical gardens and Otari bush reserve--both deserving a ramble. Enjoy your visit to NZ!!

Thanks Sandra - I had read about Lanarch Castle and the Botanical Gardens as well in Wellington. I'll look forward to checking out the others. Many thanks much appreciated.

Hi Shani, Congratulations on your wedding! It must have been wonderful with those orchids. As for what you've got, well, there is a lot of interbreeding amongst allied species in the Oncidium family, creating a whole flood of new intergeneric hybrids. Burr = Burrageara = Cochlioda X Miltonia X Odontoglossum X Oncidium; Oda = Odontiona = Cochlioda X Odontoglossum; Wils = Wilsonara = Cochlioda X Odontoglossum X Oncidium. As for care, well, you want intermediate temperatures and a slight nighttime cool down in the fall never hurts. You want bright light, about halfway between Phals and Catts, but err on the brighter side if there's a choice. Water when the mix is just dry, without watering when the mix is still wet or allowing dry periods, like for Catts. Many are repeat bloomers, as you've noticed with your Twinkle. Good luck. Julie

/TPH. I like the white caterpillar photo a lot! It's kind of neat when we import plants and yet local arachnid camouflage still works fine. /Mike. Awesome caterpillar! He looks about ready for a hookah. We saw a giant mantis roaming around on the front window of the pub last night and it looked so brilliant highlighted against the golden backdrop that I really should have taken a picture. I guess it was looking for prey, but it was a bit odd to see it in such an urban environment. Although I guess if they live on Quinn's ceiling that's evidence that they are city proof.

Schrems was surprised to discover, among the 1,222 pages of data covering three years of Facebook activity, not only deleted wall posts and messages, some with sensitive personal information, but e-mail addresses he'd deleted and names he'd removed from his friends list. Well of course it's still there. It off the page but still archived. that goes for almost anything and everything you post on the net. It's not a Facebook issue. It's part of the new age we live in. You can burn a letter or paper doc. You can't burn content off the internet. You can clean your own house but once it's out thee it is out there. I hope he has what it takes to be a better lawyer. He's not a very savvy IT guy. LOL

Well thanks folks, I do appreciate all your comments. As far as I am concerned I did the right thing. OK MISTYMORN, Yes he was sunbaking at first, but when I came with my clothes trolley and nearer to the clothes line it decided to rear it's ugly head and showed me it's fangs. My first thoughts were that we were having a barbacue at the weekend, and visitors were coming from Ireland (where there are no snakes )Children would be running around the backyard as well as my little Jack Russell-fox terrior dog. Actually he was heading in the direction of the back verandah of my house so letting him go was not an option for me. Another reason is I know of people in this area who have been bitten recently (not even realising that they had been bitten until they ended up in hospital) how could I relax knowing that it could be still hanging around..... Coincidently, yesterday I had a contractor mowing our back paddock and he came across the same kind of snake but he said unfortunately it got away and into my neighbours place.He also told me that the brownsnake can be rather aggressive, say no more, end of story. I don't like snakes of any kind.... Cheers, Margaret.

I have just spent the day at the Melbourne flower Show.

Thanks for that site Heather. We have got a bit more info re the tour itinerary, so now its just a matter of matching gardens to towns and husbands willingness to visit :o)
You mention catching up in June ?? A lovely idea but I won't have any idea of the actual days free as I'm a tag a long to a company conference. I have to go with them for some of the time and won't know that final info until much nearer the date. I hope you enjoyed the Melbourne Garden Show, I haven't ever been there myself but it is on the "to do" list.

Over on the east coast of the north island (around the middle somewhere - could probably remember exactly where if I tried) there are some cymbidium orchid grower who grow for export - well worth a visit if you can arrange it. Then there are the kiwi fruit wineries etc. :)
