Is Autumn gonna be summer?

I have been waiting for the settled weather of summer and everyone I'v talked to says that this summer has been the worst summer they can remember.

Now autumn is here the temperature is being extreme,for the last few days my thermomiter has read between 28-32 degrees outside.

Every attempt I have had at growing tomatoes or potatoes this year has met with the blight,I am finally getting fruit on some tomato plants that don't have the blight (fourth time lucky)

Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Bob, I have a good crop of potatoes but the tomatoes are struggling. Have just picked the first tomatoes. Also had trouble with my zucchini plants. Now the roses have started losing their leaves. Autumn seems to definitely be on the way.

My roses are looking decidedly sad. Luckily we didnt try and plant anything edible this year due to long stay visitors. All our dogwoods are deciding its Autumn.

you could attempt to grow foxglove, as they can overwinter pretty well in many places, and their blooms are a great addition to any garden. Since they're biennuals, they have to be planted this year. Hopefully they'll mature enough to survive winter though!

My, Mindy, how poetic, lol! But you are absolutely right! Autumn is beautiful. Ever since I was a little kid, way before I ever thought of gardening, fall has always been my favorite season. I love the colors, (not just the leaves, but the sky, the sunlight, even the clothes, lol, in their "traditional fall colors"!) the feel of the air, the smells, the crispness - it's just a very vibrant, sharp, alive season, and I love it. Maybe because I loved it before I gardened, I still love it now. I have several gardener acquaintances who always feel sad in fall, sad that the garden is over and winter is coming. But to me, it's just another season to take joy in, another facet of the garden, and I love to see others appreciate it also. So thanks for this thread. To autumn!! :) Dee

Late blooming here are: Iceberg Sweet Sixteen Sharfia Asma Playboy Charles Aznavour By Appointment One Hybrid Tea in full late bloom is Forgotten Dreams. This rose has been amazing me all this year. I moved it two years ago thinking that Forgotten Dreams was a Dream Better Forgotten. In three years prior, it hadn't given me more than two blooms and was very mousy. I stuck it in the back 40 to be forgotten but instead of fading away, it ripped out of the ground with amazing ease and has been non-stop bloom all this year with the most amazing beautiful, hugh blooms - and yes, they are Forgotten Dreams. Along with this rose, other poor performers such as Sweet Sixteen, By Appointment and Hot N Spicy were put back there. All are outstanding. It's the soil, I'm sure. The only rose back there that isn't standing up to be counted is Arizona. The really good ones are really, really good, the poorer ones are also really good. Arizona is blaugh. Not down around Oamaru and places further south if my recent trip is any indication! One minute leaning on the howling north westerlies the next being 'snap frozen' by the southerlies! complete with fresh snow on the mountains. For all that, love your country and your gardens - just about everyone seems to have their share of beautiful trees and shrubs - reminds me of Melbourne but I think you're doing it better!

I hope so! Do you know, I've been able to COUNT the butterflies I've seen so far? 4 Monarchs, 4 Cabbage Whites, 3 Black Admirals, 1 Red Admiral, and NO Little Blues! Maybe during these hot afternoons it'll be more like summer!
