Anise Hyssop

What is the best way to propagate this plant? Mine has performed spectacularly and the flowers are just about finished so I was wondering about collecting seed, taking cuttings etc. I'll probably try both. I'd like more of these, as it's a stunning plant.

I use the young leaves in cooking, I made a sauce for atlantic salmon... delish.

Either by seed or root division since its a perennial might be useful to cut it back before dividing it. I've used it with lamb instead of rosemary for a different flavour. It seems to cut the fat a bit. This is one of the herbs in my mint walk!

Thanks Linda, I'll cut it back and stike the cut off material to generate new plants. If I find any seed I'll pop them into seed raising mix and see what happens. The lamb sounds interesting. The flavour being liquorice like should have similar application to tarragon I guess. I might try Anise hyssop chicken, a twist on the famous "tarragon chicken". Oh god I'm so hungry now. ;P~

Anise Hyssop is a butterfly attracting plant with anise scented leaves and lavender flowers spikes. Plant it close to a border's edge so it's leaves can give off their scent when brushed as you walk by. Seed collection is easy. The plant makes spike florettes are where they have faded will develop the seed heads, they are gathered closely and mimic the flower spike. Intitally they are light green and then fade to brown when the seeds are mature. Gather the spikes by snapping them off the plant and allow them to dry on an open plate for a few days. Tap the seed spikes to release dozens and dozens of tiny dark-brown to black round seeds. Any excess chaff may be gently puffed away. The seed spikes themselves are attractive and scented and a good addition to a dry bouquet. To use for a bouquet simply cut the plant stem at an appropriate length and hang upside-down in a dry room for a few weeks. When it is fully dry the stem may be trimmed to vase length.

Judd, I hate to see your question unanswered and hopefully you've found some of the hyssop by now. A quick look at Google indicates that there are some garden centers in Austin that specialize in native plants. I expect that you were able to locate some plants.

I just pigged out on pork spare ribs cooked on a bed of fresh thyme and sage coated in crushed mustard seeds and finished with clover honey. Roasted some of our own potatoes and steamed some beans and brocolli out of the garden - Only had to pay for the ribs! I feel extremely guity for breaking down on my 'healthy' eating regime, but you gotta be naughty once in a while! It would make a nice version of tarragon chicken - I might try that too although I do love my 'fine herbs'
