Gardening in New Zealand

Will it take over my garden?

Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with ipomoea cairica, (Messina Creeper, Mile a Minute)This is in the same family as Morning Glory, (and kumara!) but has an attractive 5-7 lobed leaf. I've seen some info from o/seas (southern part of USA, I think) that suggests it is pretty rampant, as the name would suggest, but am wondering how it performs in New Zealand, especially in the Wellington area.

It grows really well here in perth, the wind doesn;t bother it, haven;t noticed it taking over garden but it covers fences etc quite nicely.PS my dog seems to like it as she ate it but we moved it to a pot and it doubled in size in 2 weeks. Hope this helps

If it has quite a pretty leaf and a mauve flower, it will take forever to get rid of it, It runs along the grass and despite round up, the only way is to grab the vine and untangle it. The trouble is it is really pretty just very troublesome.

There's no scale in the picture - can you tell us how big it is, or put something in the picture to show scale. I was assuming those were grass blades behind and that therefore the plant was just a couple of inches tall. Is that too big for Chamberbitter?

Can I just say Thank you!!!!! This conversation had me on a google search that lead to this: http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/weedguide/singlerecord.asp?id=1050 It looks like this is PERENNIAL SOWTHISTLE Other Names: corn sow thistle, creeping sow thistle, dindle, field milk thistle, field sow thistle, gutweed, hare's colewort, hare's lettuce, hare's palace, milk thistle, swine thistle, swinies, tree sow thistle. I probably never noticed it flower thinking it was a neighboring dandelion. If anyone else runs it this nightmare hopefully they can catch it quicker than I did. Thanks again!!!! These 2 suggestions on what it was gave me the right search string. Now off to find a way to destroy it! :)

That's true - I guess I figured because mine came from an outdoor garden in Florida (many years ago) I thought they'd be alright being thrown out into a warmer, sunnier (my garden window does get a lot of sun - I've even had some aloe get a little sunburned, but it still doesn't compare to outdoor sun) environment than in my house. Pretty ignorant of me, but hey! You live and you learn. I'll definitely inspect the roots and see what's up! I normally do all of my gardening in my kitchen, but if the plant is full out infested with these suckers I don't think it's good idea to be doing it in my kitchen haha. I could take them outside and work on them once the weather warms up one last time before winter hits (fall weather has it's ups and downs here). I don't think it's ants - ant season is over here, and when my garden window has ants, you can see them. But a good suggestion!! I appreciate it.

Mile a minute is a nationally banned plant. You should be doing everything you can to get ride of it even in a garden setting... check out http://www.protectnz.org.nz/ for more information on banned plants.

It is a very pretty plant but you would be better off growing sweet peas from seed. These have the added benefits of smelling great and adding nitrogen to your soil without the drawbacks of a violent spreading habit. I've had great success in growing sweet peas in Wellington. The key is to have a climbing frame and plant seeds rather than seedlings. The seedlings don't like their roots to be moved.
