Fantastic shot. I hope you had a long lens. I don't think I'd like to get too close to that; although it does sort of remind me on my ex mother in law!

Great picture. If you ask me, I think the aligators are getting out of hand at Brazos Bend SP. I was there a couple of weeks ago and they sun themselves right beside the trails where people have to walk. They don't seem to pay much attention when people walk by them, but my fear is that a child might approach them. The park is a great place to look at birds and other wildlife though.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Happy, yes the glass was a lot of work! Some of the pieces were so tiny that by the time I got them wrapped with copper foil you could barely see the glass so I would have to use an exacto knife and trim the copper. I'm happy with how it turned out though. Lynne, are you asking about the plants the butterflies are on? If so, the Gulf Frit is on pink penta "Starburst" and there are dune sunflowers in the background. The zebra longwing is on purple porterweed. ~Betsy

'Over-watering' far less likely to be the case than is insufficient watering. Leaf tip necrosis is pretty much SOP for drought stress/leaf scorch. How much water does the tree gator dispense? It would also help to see a photo of the entire tree.

catherinet I find your post very interesting, especially since I'm a fifth generation Hoosier, from Benton County. I moved to Florida, and then on to Texas in 1976, and never looked back. I still have my parents and three of my brothers living in Indiana, but three of us kids live in Texas, two in Houston and me, used to be Houston, but now Rockport. You get used to living around wildlife. Now don't get me wrong, because I don't want to meet up with this gator or any other scary wildlife for a matter of fact, but they are here, and being aware and just staying out of their territory is the key. Unless they feel threatened or trapped, they will leave you alone. OK, since I've been living out here in the rural south Texas area, only 150 miles from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, I've learned to deal with sharks, alligator gars, coyotes, snakes, both poisonous and non-poisonous, bobcats, and cougars, and then the not to worry about animals, i.e. fox, raccoons, armadillos, possums, etc. I've even had some non-poisonous snakes get into my house occasionally along with lizards, skinks and geckos. You just get used to it. Tell you what, . . .I'd rather deal with the wildlife then having to live back in Houston again. HA! It is very beautiful here, so that makes up for everything. P.S. And gators are ugly, but then I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. And my son lives in Alaska, and he has to deal with bears and moose that are not very nice to humans either. So the key is to stay out of their territory! My back yard, makes it all worth it.

Red Oak, Shumard, or Texas Oak

Shumard (q. shumardii) and Texas red oak (q. buckleyi) are both also in the red oak group, so question is what species of red oak you have. Photos of back side of leaf, terminal bud, bark, and acorns (once you get some) can help in telling the reds apart, because it's often not obvious... and even more confusing when they hybridize. May find more who are good at this over on the GW Trees forum. Your tree looks really nice at three years regardless of its pedigree. The big box stores have gotten better at stocking trees that do well locally, so less likely to be selling a Nuttall's (now q. texana) or some northern red in alkaline FW. Might look into Tubakia Leaf Spot fungus to see if it matches your tree's symptoms.

I agree about the gators getting out of control. Down here in Rockport, we see them all the time. I've had them within 50' of my back door. I worry about small animals and children being attacked too. And over at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge they are all over the place. Sitting right there in front of you. They scare me to death. Have you ever seen how fast they can run?

Louisiana has gator season, and I think that it's time that both Texas and Florida have a gator season too.

Its amazing that the words "gator season" are actually being uttered. 25 years ago it would have been frowned upon by anybody that had even an inkling of an interest in wildlife, as their numbers were dangerously low. I think it says alot the ability of gators to recover and also says alot about the impact of conservation.

When I was in Florida last year, the number of alligators I saw was amazing. I too think their numbers are up enough to open a limited "gator season".

Let the gators eat kids and dogs. Their populations are out of control as well. Just kidding, I like dogs.

Georgia opened up it's first gator season this past year. Am sure all of you have read of the folks killed by gators in FL(our neighbor) if the past year or so. They weren't all children, either!
Unfortunately, some animal & bird species get over protected & that balance of nature & food supply gets turned topsy turvey!

Kids and animals?? See that sly smile......he's just waiting for anyone, man or beast, to get close enough to have lunch with.
When I lived in FL in the late 80s we called a trapper and he took three gators out of the canal. All three in the wide spot at our back yard.
