Your lemon is ripe now; ripe being defined as 8-8.5 brix (percent sugar). It is more yellow on the side facing the sun because that side has a greater change between day and night temperature; you can see the same effect on leaf color in the Fall for trees that change colors. If you leave your fruit on the tree, it will get more yellow until the end of the year. Sometimes, if I am sending display Meyers to a show, I will leave them on the tree until the end of January; but by the middle of November (for the main crop in Northern Hemisphere) Meyers are ready to harvest.

Here's an article about vultures that mentions that sort of thing. It only talks about black vultures being that aggressive. Thank God I've only got turkey vultures around here where I live. As far as I know, they haven't shown any interest in my pets. And as far as I can remember, I haven't ever had one land in the trees in or next to the fenced-in yard. I live in central Alabama, and we have both black and turkey vultures everywhere. I got a ton of great shots of both as they fly over the house very low and/or perch in the trees off the bluff. Our back yard terminates into the bluff. They're awesome, and gorgeous. One easy way to determine if it's a black or turkey vulture is the color, of course, but note that the wings of a turkey vulture has white across the entire wingspan, and the black vultures have the white feathers at the tips. Turkey vultures' brown feathers are similar to the color of a bald eagle's, and they tend to wobble when they soar. The pic below is of one who perched above our house, then flew to a tree on the bluff outside our back yard.

Within the past say 3 years I have turkey vultures spending the night in the huge cottonwood in the very back of my yard. They spend their nights in this neighborhood....sometimes at my house, some times at another house a block away. There is a huge group circling every night in the summer...like 20 or more birds. But I do have a picture where I counted about 40 birds in the tree one fall after the leaves were gone. I wonder when they will leave? ( I am in central Iowa) do they all migrate as a flock? One at a time? Where do they nest? And why do I never see a vulture eating any of the dozens of road kill deer in this area? I haven't seen a vulture on the ground in Iowa ever! Can anyone shed some light on these mysteries? Linda C
