need quick tip for new Lumix

I just got the fz18 and want to take it to the zoo this weekend. There are so many great features... a bit of sensory overload for us visual learners. I see that there are auto settings for nearly every occasion... except a dreary day. Any hints for getting great results at the not very well-lit white tiger exhibit? Many TIA!

Hi Sophie, no tips but I am thinking of getting an fz18 (I have the fz10 for a couple of years). How do you like the pictures you are getting for quality?

What about the zoom lens?

Hey, Myrtle... sorry I didn't answer sooner. I just about gave up on any action in this forum.

I haven't been able to get out as much as I'd like to work out the new camera. I've bounced back and forth between disappointment and delight. On a nice sunny day, it seems to do very nicely. Low light, not so great. Also, my hands are not quite as steady as they used to be and I keep forgetting my tripod. If you're looking for something to post pics online, I'd say you couldn't do much better.

Here are a couple of shots from yesterday, both taken at full 18x zoom using the automatic setting. The only editing I did was a crop.

We are in the middle of building a house and just ordered the Wayne Dalton 8300 model, but it is not in yet. We needed a 100mph wind rating and wanted good insulation (the r value is improved when they spray polyurethane not put in polystyrene). We are in CA, but I think in Florida some have told me that you may need to have a wind rating. The 9000 series the door salesman tells me is thinner and the ones that Lowe's sells. Also the 8300 gives you an R value of 11 and 25 gauge steel on both sides of the insulation. We wanted the 8500 which gives you a R-15, but they don't sell to the west coast. I am only a homeowner, but have researched a lot. For 2 doors installation, Lift Master 1/2 HP openers and remotes price is under $3500. (also includes windows and qualifies for the tax credit so off about $750)... Good luck!!

I can do platforms, just working on mastering those little tiny heels. I think I'm kind of flunking a bit. I've practiced three times, while having tea cat's instructions on full screen. I've gotten out the alcohol mixed with water and rubbed the insides as this is the cheater way to break in leather shoes. The loggers do this with their heavy custom boots. You just have to wear them until they dry. I don't think I'll be getting blisters but I'm not sure I look like I was born to wear heels. LOL! I'm taking some dressy sandals that are proven performers, just in case. I'm really working on that hip movement. You are right, tea, it's not as easy as it seems. Farmer/hippie girl turn 'Italian mistress' doesn't just happen in a week. It's out of town (3 1/2 hours away) and we're staying at the hotel where the event is being held. DHs brother and family are staying at my MILs house. (We can better afford to put our entire family up elsewhere). It's Auntie's 90th B-Day party and the family is doing it up big. She is a very spry (read: fashionable, even) 90 and our family is Italian, so it will be party time (big time) with suits and ties, good food, good family, good company and Italian alcohol galore. Family members are coming from Italy. I've just got to master these shoes. LOL! I still have until Saturday.

Bill, thanks so much for mentioning that floor installation may also include removal of old flooring - forgot about that - too many things to think of! Well, I think the deal is probably dead. The bank, or someone representing them, came back with a counter-offer for all parties of $115,900. I'm not budging. My first offer was $101,990 and was told to put in my best and highest offer, which I did at $105,900. I wrote a letter and wanted to include an attachment for pictures but was told the bank will only look at faxed papers, so had to forego the visual. I wrote the problems that I'm aware of, trying to keep it short and to the point and told "whoever" that with all the problems there was at least $40K worth of work that I know of, at a price of $115K I didn't feel that the price was warranted and asked that if they reconsider my offer to let me know. Hopefully, the listing agent will submit it. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be - maybe they'll come back to me if no one bids any higher or makes a better offer than I did - otherwise, it goes in foreclosure. Thanks all!

Quick ways to acidify soil for new potato spot

With regard to vinegar for acidifying soil, realize that it will rinse out of the soil very quickly, and the carbonates that remain in the soil will keep it alkaline. Also, be aware that where one has alkaline soil, you may well have alkaline water (we do, in Texas, because it's groundwater that is coming from sitting on the same alkaline soil I'm fighting). So unless you irrigate with rainwater or otherwise distilled water, you're going to defeat the effect of the vinegar pretty fast. I think a sulfur application is the only way to go, but as noted above, it's not quick, and you still may be irrigating with alkaline water. I frankly think it's a losing battle, trying to significantly acidify soil. Much easier going the other direction. You mean the pH is 7.5? That's barely alkaline. But scab is indeed mitigated by soil that is quite acidic.

I have the FZ20 and generally get good photos. Don't change the ISO, leave it at 100 or lower. Try the fully auto setting first, see if it can function in the available light. I change the aperature if necessary to get clear garden shots in the evening, try that next. Change the ISO as a last resort.

I just wish I'd made a better camera a higher priority back when my hands were rock steady. PTL for tripods. 8-]
