Questions about watering Iceberg roses, Lavender in SoCal
Comments (7)water right before sunrise. shear the lavenders into globes, taking care not to cut back to dead wood. Take off 1-2". azaleas have small, shallow root systems, so lightly but frequently is the best way to water. They do not like to dry out. You could try some fertilizer, but lightly. Those small, shallow root systems are sensitive. . Iceberg I do 3x / week mid spring to the beginning of December. 90'sF every other day, 100sF every day. Normal winters I shut off my irrigation. This year 2x per week, just enough. Probably will step it up to 3x in a couple of weeks. A gallon or two at a time is good depending on the size of the plants. Adjust by observing the plants. Do they look good? Are they holding on to their foliage? Are they reblooming well? Mulch will hold in moisture, keep the soil cooler (rose roots like cool soil) and break down into nutrients that enrich the soil. Keep mulch away from the base of the rose by 3"-6"...See MorePreserving cut roses
Comments (8)For cutting, there is no flower that surpasses. A little off the subject (but this is my thread) the reason I grow roses is for the fabulous feeling I had this afternoon, after the last of the 16 I have room for was planted. "Better than S*x" as they say. The first half were J & P bareroots; April in Paris looks just like the potted roses I bought from Armstrong, which comprise the second half. Monday, four of the bareroots hadn't broke dormancy. Today one has long red nubs, a second more than just swollen eyes, and the other two. One, Gemini, if you can believe it, has nothing, but the second, Beauty Within has signs of red. We have the east coast's cool air, it is barely breaking 70 here. The roses (and my wardrobe) are confused. It is a godlike feeling. Sublime. Maybe I could fit one more pot. Nahhh. You are the only ones I could share this with, who would understand. I hope I never face a world with out you, and roses, again. Beth...See MorePreserving life of cut peonies
Comments (6)I saw an ad online around a year ago for a "water globe" vase where the peony bloom was put in it & you filled the globe with water, then you closed it - looked like one of those water balls with "snow". They claimed the bloom lasted a long time like that. I tried to find that vase for you, but no luck! Maybe you could try submerging a bloom in a vase underwater & see if it lasts longer! They claim the submerged bloom is "magnified" by the water & they look really cool. Would keep the ants from prancing out into the house, too lol!!...See Morehow to preserve flowers
Comments (5)I've never waxed flowers, but if you want to preserve them for a LONG time, I think drying them is probably the best. I've had a rosebud that was on an arrangement at my baby's funeral back in 1984. I have the roses that my daughter and her family brought me last year on Mother's Day and I'm in the process of drying the ones they sent me this year. I've found it better to dry roses before they completely bloom. I just take them out of the water/vase, put them all together and hang them upside down for a few weeks. Then, I spray them with Krylon Acrylic Sealer. That's it!...See Morealice50
