Grass wont grow on a beach.....so compare what you have and decide how best to use it. Sand is a marvellous drainer of moisture. Chances are the sand you have is not good for gardening. If its beach sand, or sand more likely found in a child's playbox, it is not what one should use for helping plants drain. What you have to do to the area is devise a plan on how to get organic matter into the ground under the sand. Six inches of sand...you didn't say what the area was...so we assume it was a 30' wide above ground round pool. That would work out to about 12 cubic yards of sand. You have a lot of work to do. If the sand is the type that can be used for gardening....that is, it is a coarse grain type, then maybe you can offer it to friends and neighbors to come and take what they want. Spread out over a wide area, and dug down 6" - 12" could be done if it is this type. You might get in touch with a quarry in your area and offer it free of charge. Probably tho, they wont accept it--they have lots without it. You'd have to hire a front-end loader to take to a truck to haul it away. To dig it in and cover over with topsoil might prove to be a bigger headache. Sand, the type that comes from the beach, will not drain moisture, instead, it will cause soil to become like granite...especially if it is clay soil. A sign out front...."free sand" might get rid of some..just don't tell them its not the type for gardening. Lots of kids in the neighborhood, the sign might read 'good for sandboxes'. Its too bad you didn't write into the sale documents that the sand had to be removed by seller. The people in North Dakota could use it.

WOW .... luna .... those are really pretty! Great way to recycle .... so attractive and durable. Love that. I'd probably pay the $49 too, if I didn't have 2 grandsons to spend the money on instead lol. Need to show the pic to hubby and see if he might try his version .... Micki, I had an old tire rim planted with hens and chicks, and the bleepin' squirrels dug them up. I had them down at the back part of the yard and didn't keep a close eye on them. Anyways, it looked really good when it was thriving, might plant again someday and bring it up closer to the house. There was a time when many of the houses in this area had tire planters out in their yards. Don't see them much anymore. I like the idea of using them to contain the aggressive plants like mint, maybe bamboo could work like that too, but one would still probably have to dig down and put a barrier in to contain the roots. I've had that stuff almost take over my garden! Let us know whattcha do with them. ~tenderlee

Yes, different how they think, huh? lol MsRose, Personally, I love the big mirror look in bathrooms. Maybe because I've only ever had very small bathrooms with just enough room for the itty-bitty medicine cabinets with mirror doors. Would love your mirror! If it were my mirror and I had removed it by just whacking it (using all the safety procautions possible) and it came off in pieces, I'd repair the drywall (Very simple repair since it would only be a section of wall, not a whole room) and add the nice, decorative mirrors I've been seeing all over the TV and magazines. One sink, one larger mirror. Two sinks, each would get a separate mirror. Both would be nice enough that they would practically be focal points for the bathrm. I would get that done ASAP so that I could get to the creative (read: FUN!) part I love to do and that would be to use the broken mirror pieces to create something ala mosaic. Sooo many mirrored decor pieces out now on more upscale websites I've seen and the prices could choke a horse! From mirrored night tables to lamps. So, if you are asking what to do with the mirror should it not come off in decent pieces, I'd keep the pieces and create something fab-ooo, something unique, something special for my home. Here's an idea I found on the web not too long ago (while looking for ideas to use my Bordello Bunny pieces and shatters that were once two trays).

When I worked for the school district we used to buy rags from Goodwill for the repair shop. T-shirts and towels were preferred but sometimes if not specified they'd give us all sorts of clothes. All the secretaries would come running and go through the rag bags and grab clothes. You'd be surprised what they'd put in there. Perfectly good clothes - often like new and possibly new. But I also have one more idea. Check with your local school's auto shop. Well, any of the shop classes. Wood shop would use them too, most likely. Often use rags for staining wood and as tack cloths for prep work. They may well want them for rags. Help out the schools too. Even electronic repair shops, computer repair shops and the like would likely need them. When I had my shop we always washed down the computers before returning them. Would have really appreciated a bunch of t-shirts rather than using paper towels all the time. Otherwise, I like the mechanic idea too. But I'm sure Goodwill would take them. Possibly Salvation Army. Frankly, don't count out the local Community Action programs. Maybe you don't think they're very good, but if a poor hard-working parent can't afford any clothes for their kids, what you might think is bad could be a joy for them. Don't be embarrassed to ask. I'm sure you'll advise them up-front as to condition and if they say no thank you, that's fine, but you wanted to offer, just in case. Another thought - any small engine repair shops? Hardware store or something? Is there a neighbor who does shadetree mechanic repairs or the like? Your local city or county probably has a maintenance shop for repairing trucks and vehicles who would probably want them too. Save a few taxpayer dollars that way too. No matter what or where they go, it's a nice time of year to think of a donation of any type to any worthwhile place.
