May, your Maranta/Prayer Plant is beautiful. How long have you had it? You're doing everything right..the only issue I see that 'might' be a problem is heat. 80F is a little on the high side. Aside from direct sun, and lack of humidity, too hot an area can cause brown edges. If you had more plants I'd suggest running a fan. However, a fan should not be aimed directly on a plant. Rotating fans are best. It helps with air circulation. Is there a window that can be opened in the room? One more thing to try. Save water in a container. Fill your watering can the night before you plan on watering. Let the water sit 24 hours before giving your Maranta a drink. Otherwise, your Prayer Plant is doing great. Toni Ususally, leaves start folding as the day darkens. By chance, is there a light nearby your plant that stays on at night? I recently noticed, some species don't fold as much as others. My 2-yr-Maranta 'Lime' doesn't fold its leaves as much as other Marantas. It's nothing to worry about. As long as your plant is growing, I don't see a problem. Perhaps, someone else has other information why its leaves aren't closing.

Yes. It is possible. A recent paper by Golino et al discussed in detail the root to root transmission of RMV. The abstract for that paper is on line at the link below. Golino works at UC Davis with the collections of grapes, strawberries and roses that are there to provide disease free plant material. The paper on root to root came about because they were seeing RMV where it shouldn't have been. I talked to her several weeks ago and the info in the paper still stands. In addition, there are a lot of papers about other root-to-root transmission of other viruses in other plants in Rosaceae. If you have access to a university library, you should be able to get the full paper from that library. It's well worth the effort. And there is also the possibility that Chamblees might have RMV in some of their roses. RMV in my garden definitely shows in times of stress. My roses will look like that frequently in the spring when temperatures fluctuate like what you describe. They get frost nipped when the new growth isn't quite prepared for low dips in the temperature. You can pull off any foliage that annoys you, or the rose will drop it off on its own and grow lovely new foliage for you. Others may chime in if there looks to be anything else contributing to this, but it looks like normal spring variability to me. Cynthia
