Steve, when you mentioned the "neck/no-neck" thing, it reminded me of how amazed I was when my mom told me that her recycling program would only take wide-mouth glass jars - or was it that they would NOT take wide-mouth glass jars? But either way, I couldn't believe that they would distinguish between these. Maybe I'm naive and don't know enough about the process, but it seems to me that a jar is a jar! Oh well, the good news is that now her program takes all jars. In looking through that link, I was intrigued by how many different things could "contaminate" the process. I was never aware of that. Now I wonder that programs never asked us to remove labels from cans and especially jars. We have a local "garbage museum" that my kids have visited several times on school trips. Maybe I should make a visit and learn more about the process! :) Dee

From what I understand, aluminum is endlessly recyclable. Plastic can only be recycled a few times, and I don't believe it can ever be recycled into food grade plastic again. Also, the plastic label cannot be recycled. Shipping-wise, plastic is lighter, but aluminum uses more available space. They are both round, but plastic bottles are wasting space at the top where they dome in, as well as the space taken up by the stackable plastic shipping pieces. I don't know which allows for more fuel efficiency: less empty space resulting in more liquid shipped per truckload, or lighter containers resulting in less fuel needed for propulsion. I can't think of many ways to reuse aluminum cans, and can only think of a few for the plastic bottles. Any uses for either will last a long time, which means you won't be doing much in the reuse section of the 3 R's.

I always seem to accumulate a large pile and never quite know how to get rid of them. The past spring, Cracked Pots (non-profit recycle group of artists) teamed with Allen Jongsma, of Agri-Plas, Inc. and the result has been wonderful. Allen and his company, take all plastic nursery pots, regardless of size or color, they grind them up and then sell the pieces to another company that makes pots again. What a great recycling story. The project that Cracked Pots began was due to end July 31, but due to the high demand the program is continuing on. The following is a listing of drop off sites. OK, if this shows up 2x I am sorry, I was typing along and the message just disappeared. I use one of the Mayo jars to keep my cone filters in that go with my coffee pot. If you wanted to disguise it, you could get a small bit of shelf liner or wall paper, put on the top, (molding and cutting so you can still open it) and then glue or screw a drawer pull to use as an opener. the only thing I am thinking of right now for the Benifiber jars is a Snowman or Santa, much like the Angel you already mentioned. I guess you could paint them up to look like Gnome/Fairey houses and stick them in your garden. Ellie
