ALL named cultivars.. are either DIVISIONS... or TC created divisions ... no seed is ever involved.. so presuming you are NOT talking about seedlings.. lets move on.. fire and ice.. is one of the biggest pieces of carp in the hosta world.. but lucky you.. yours is NOT such.. you might want to compare yours.. to the hosta library .... and i believe you will agree ... now finally.. yes .... the road to maturity.. is not unlike your precious 10 year old going thru to be 15.. there are some really ugly stages.. lol ... we talk.. of the sleep/creep/leap theme.. and that is EXACTLY what you are 'seeing' .... enjoy it.. its the transformative stage ... wherein .. it grows as it can the first year.. based on whatever you bought.. the second year.. after transplant.. it is doing most of its real work underground.. growing the root mass .... so that in the third year.. it can start dancing like some insane ballerina .. leaping all over the place ... but do understand.. some of the families.. can take 10 years to do this ... e.g. the giants ... you are lucky to be starting with an undulata .. that can do it so fast .... you can actually 'see it' ... i read nothing abnormal in your words.. enjoy the show. and we will continue to work on your educational curve.. have a great hosta day .. ken ps: one more thing.. on some level host alike to be potbound.. and your BMEars is in way to big a pot.. we pot consistent with the size rec'd. and up -pot.. when they need it.. we do NOT start in a giant pot ... and babka and the pot peeps [picture night of the living dead zombies.. lol] ..... can lead you better thru pot culture.. if they havent already ... but if you like that pot.. there is a pot in pot' system ... start a new post about that.. if you want to learn about it ...

There isn't much I can say that you don't know about but I'll add my two cents just as an observation, Bk. None of your hostas mentioned here are viridescent in the truest sense of the word. NBC won't lose its noticeable variegation, it will remain muted if it stays in its current location. It doesn't matter with LSMASTER where you place it. It naturally goes lighter in the centre as the season progresses. P & J is not viridescent either. It is in too much shade. If you want it to look as it should,try giving it more light? Perfect lighting is tricky at best - thank goodness for potted hosta! At least we can alter exposure easily enough. Can't do much about the heat though. A true viridescent hosta cannot be halted in its transition, but it can be delayed with lighting. I have retained a lighter centre with Whirlwind by giving it more sun. It does go a bit greener, but not as dark if it received less sun (relocated two years ago). Albopicta, also a viridescent, transitions quickly regardless of sun or shade. Don Rawson hopefully can weigh in re his beautiful Pride and Joy. My suggestion would be to allow it more sun exposure. You must love it, BK..wish I had one. :-)

I'm a hosta freak and I still want to keep the piece that's growing on the side. I know its a halcyon and I already have like four I think but I can't kill it on purpose. I have to do some surgery to keep it alive. I also don't know if I even want to give it to somebody.

FWIW, I wouldn't recommend full sun in your zone 7. Even if you water it enough, it will bleach out from the sun. Sunlight does promote vigour but it also melts the blue wax off hostas under prolonged exposure. Jo, I'm in zone 8 and most of my hostas get full sun, it's a matter of the angle of the sun, i.e. latitude and not the zone that makes the difference. I'm just north of the 49th parallel, don't know exactly where you are in Ontarario but I'll bet you closer to the 44th or 43rd parallel and the angle of the sun in your garden is steeper and therefor stronger than it is in mine in sunny Richmond, B.C. I like to grow mine in the sun as much as possible for the increased vigour, in particular the green ones... Your seedlings will probably be green...if anyone has BME seedlings, they will hopefully chime in. I have had a couple of BME seedlings, indeed they were all-green and from their leaf shape and texture there was no doubt of their heritage. BME is a poor seed-setter FWIW, I've had the variety for almost a decade and have had maybe a handful of pods over the years. Pieter
