Hi Debra, Leave propagation can take a short or long time depending on the age of the leaf that is put down. The best leaves for propagataing are from the 3rd row of the plant. These generally pop up in a few weeks. Older leaves can take much longer. I have had leaves down for 4 months before the little mouse ears popped up through the soil. As long as the leaf is still viable it will eventually happen. You might try giving the pot a little squeeze or thumping it on the table to dissturb the roots a bit. But other than that just keep doing what you have been doing and hope for the best. Fred in NJ

David If this is your first try, if you have read this forum, used a light mix of soil, moist but not too wet and have the terrariums in bright light out of direct sunlight, then wait and see. You will most likely succeed with a lot of patience. It takes a while sometimes to see mouse ears. If you have tried before and failed, then post about what you did then and the forum posters will give good advice and you will succeed. I had never had any luck propagating leaves until I came to this forum and talked to all the good folks here. Now I have forests of new plants, little mouse ears everywhere!

(1)cut the leaf close to the base & retain the stem (2) apply 0.1% IBA Rooting houmone to stem at base of leaf,(3) Use well drained soil... stick stem in soil so that the base of the leaf touches the soil AND the leaf is sticking up in the air & the bulk of the leaf is not touching the soil (4)heep soil damp but not wet.... mist leaf, keep out of direct sunlight, keep out of draft. (5) at some time if leaf does not dehydrate a new plant will form at point where leaf meets soil. let it grow & months (?) (6) later may seporate from leaf.

I've not heard of this being common practice with AV's, but it is something that streptocarpus growers will do if they desire lots of baby plants (as opposed to planting a whole leaf stem down which usually yields one baby plant.) I would say that most of us here put our AV leaf stem down into the soil. Some leaves will give you a whole pot full of babies; others only 1 or 2. I've had to try to salvage leaves for propagating that had damage or rot and after cutting away all the "bad" parts was left with only a portion of the leaf; sometimes I've had only the leaf itself because the stem broke off entirely. Sometimes that partial leaf will work for me - but not always. I get better odds of success using a whole leaf, stem planted down. But if cutting it in half consistently works for you, why change? Do what works in your conditions, that's my advice.
