Classic case of too much water. That's exactly what happens too Petunias and a few other plants, when they get waterlogged. One day they look fine and the next they are sprawled on the ground. The heat and humidity doesn't help either. Some plants can take that much rain others can't. Last year we had weeks of nonstop rain and my Impatiens did the same thing. Our vegetable garden was the pits too. The only things that really produced as usual was the peas and we had a bumper crop of Potatoes. So blame it all on the weather--that's what did the damage.

Would it be possible to post a picture of the damage to the pepper plants? That would really help. I agree that hornworms may be a possibility but when tomato plants are available they seldom go after peppers. So I'm thinking it is something else - climbing cutworms (slim) or a mammal of some kind like a groundhog. As to the bad tomato growing place - that sounds like a soil pocket problem of some sort. Since the pumpkins are thriving there I'd suspect a possible hot pocket of excess nitrogen OR a soil pocket that doesn't drain well and so remains too wet. Tomato plants are much more susceptible to root rot than members of the squash family. Dave

Thank you for the help!!!! I could only find a chemical fertilizer to dilute in water (all the organic stuff was solid sprinkle on). Anyhow, I cut it down to 1/3 rd strength and applied it every third day twice. BIG improvement!! I'm growing slips for sweet potatoes. I did an experiment. When I pulled the slips from the sweet potato I dipped some in a root hormone powder and left some without. The results are remarkable to me: Again, THANK YOU for your help in saving my tomato seedlings.

Chandra, It's great to hear that the garden is recovering. I'm glad to see the tomato plants putting out new growth---that is sort of amazing when you think about how hot it has been. The okra and eggplant look fantastic. Apparently it takes more than a pounding from hail and a microburst to set them back for very long. That's too bad about the squash, but it is typical here. I just sow new seeds every month in different spots scattered around the garden in the hope the SVBs and squash bugs won't find the plants. Usually, I get some production from a plant before the bugs or borers take it out. Right now, I have one yellow squash plant "hidden" in a row of tomato plants that is producing well and has no signs of pests. Since I said that, the poor plant probably will collapse and die in the next 2 or 3 days and it will be my fault for jinxing it by saying it had no pests on it. I also 'hide' the squash by planting them under hardy hibiscus plants or mixed in with corn or watermelons or any aromatic herb, It is harder for the pests to find them if they are scattered around instead of planted all in a row where the pests go down the row from plant to plant to plant. Hope y'all are doing well! Dawn
