Rain lilies - Zephyranthes - are related to Amaryllis so no, not a 'true' lily (Lilium genus). There is an Amaryllis/Hippeastrum forum on Garden Web if you are interested.

"based on comments so far i should get the true lily of the valley but i see many varieties, can anyone suggest the most strongly scented? " Forget about all the cultivars. With the exception now and again of the variegated form, they are almost impossible to find outside of a few mail order sources and none are ranked or selected for a stronger fragrance than others. However the species - just the straight Convallaria majalis - is widely available almost anywhere. It is a strong, robust plant with an intense, carrying fragrance. IME, it is the number of flower spikes produced that create the fragrance intensity and the species is a prolific bloomer.

Where are you located that Easter lilies bloom in March?? That is NOT typical!! These are a summer blooming lily (Lilium longiflorum) and their standard bloom time is June and July and maybe as late as August. Blooming in March is not the normal time anywhere! They only bloom at Easter if forced to by the specialty growers. I've grown many Easter lilies over the years, both from dormant purchased bulbs and from recycled living plants received as gifts. One planted in the garden, they will bloom at their normal time of midsummer, even in my very mild climate.

RC....I wish you lived closer, I'd give you some when I divide this fall. Around here Asiatic lilies multiply like rabbits!

That is one gorgeous lily! I wish I had room for just one more flower of any kind. No more room....and no more energy either. I've had to have hubby turn some beds back to grass because while the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. In other words, I'm getting too old!

You're never too old for gardening.....
You can still grow houseplants, if you have the room.
Several (many) years ago, when we lived in the city, and I was a stay-at-home-mom, I had a houseful of houseplants. Still have a few, and would love to have a greenhouse some day.
