vacationing in South Carolina

Okay, the first major snowstorm of the year is raging here in MN and I'm already thinking about a getaway in late March - the time of year when I'm really sick of winter. Right now I love it - in March I'm ready for it to end.

Anyway, DH and I have been thinking about going to South Carolina. I don't think he's ever been there and I've only been to Charleston on a business trip and saw nothing but my hotel and the company I was working with.

I would like to go to Charleston and see all the historic stuff but what else should I see? I like history, nature, local scenery and local culture but generally try to stay away from contrived tourist traps. I can spend a day or so in a congested tourist area but that's about it unless whatever is there is really great. Like I'd put up with crowds at the Louvre in Paris but I'd not go to Disney World - if you know what I mean.

Anyone live in SC or have vacationed there who could advise based on first hand experience? I was thinking about a few days in Charleston and then maybe something resort-y for a couple days.
