Hi Kids,

Did anyone remember to watch The Amazing Race tonight? It was a good one. I did not like the way it ended. More tomorrow when everyone on the West coast has seen it.

I'm surprised the Jala did not do well in a 7B zone. Out of all the tropicals, it seems to be the most prolific as far as ears/kernels go. Another one that I just found this year is an Olotillo-Tuxpeno that produced ears on almost every plant, even ones that were 20 feet tall. Ears are shorter than Jala, but they have a large circumference. The Olotillo-Tuxpeno plants produced many strange deformed ears. I had one plant produce 9 ears from one location, and a couple plants producing ear like structures near the tassels. 9 ears from one location on an Olotillo-Tuxpeno maize plant ears near the tassel on an Olotillo-Tuxpeno maize plant. I found this on several plants. Olotillo is a bit harder to produce viable ears than Jala or Olotillo-Tuxpeno, but I'm still capable of producing some in my area. I tried my hand at a race called Gallina this year. I was able to produce a few dozen kernels. I would have had many more, but we had an early frost. I also tried another race named Uchima, but the ears were undeveloped by frost. That variety produces plants around 19 to almost 21 feet. on my first try. I'm going to try them a little earlier next year and I should have ears. Now a variety that has been a disaster for me has been Montana. I've never been able to get viable ears with that variety, but this year I was close to getting one. Above the ruler are Jala ears. Below the ruler on the bottom left are Olotillo ears (maroon colored), and bottom right are Olotillo-Tuxpeno ears which have a larger circumference. Inca giant? You mean Cuzco Gigante (the one with the nickel sized kernels)? That one was a disaster for me. There are some varieties that are very indolent in my area. That is one of them! Another one that I don't do well with is Oloton. I can always tell because you don't get straight stalks, and they tend to be more brittle. Final report on the spring planting of Cool Breeze: 32 lbs of cucumbers from 12 plants. Put another way, 24 pints of bread and butter pickles, 9 quarts of sliced dill pickles, and a few cucumbers for fresh eating and sharing with family. Every fruit was crisp, juicy, and sweet, even when the plans were under stress. They held very well in the fridge, too. That trait was really useful, since I needed to collect 2-3 pickings to get enough for a batch of pickles. Debby did them in; I've been battling mildew for weeks but after three days of near-constant rain every single leaf is badly damaged, even the newest growth. I'm going to give it a few days to see if any of the small fruit still on the vines will grow to usable size, then yank them. (Also, I need to get more seeds before I can replant.) I had pretty much expected to lose them in the heat and humidity of summer. With the good harvest, I consider them a big success, and will definitely replant this variety in the future. Note: The fruits I had this year were really spiny. I don't remember them being this spiny when I grew them years ago. I even had spines lodge in my fingers and break off in my skin. (The good news is that the spines soften up and fall out after a few hours.) If you have delicate skin, I recommend wearing gloves to harvest and handle them until you wash the spines off, or they soften on their own.

Stevation, My Miss Kim gets a lot of water, it lies in the direct path of the overflow from my half-whiskey barrel water gardens and I overflow the barrels every 3 days or so in the spring and summer. It is also watered via my drip system that I run for 7 minutes every 3rd day in the dead heat of summer but I have yet to turn on my drip system this year. The lilac is heavily mulched with pine bark and mushrooms keep popping up amongst its bottom branches. I amended the native clay with 30% compost when I planted the lilac 2 years ago but I havent done a thing to it since. It gets at least 8 hours of sun per day. It is not a fast grower for me, it has doubled its size in 2 years and now stands 2 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. I hope this information helps but I would say this plant's survival is more about luck than doing the right thing. :) -Azura Here is a link that might be useful:

I buy my seed envelopes at Staples - they're not cheap, but I find the plastic baggies hard to work with. The upside of the plastic bags is that you can see the seeds right away - the downside is that if seeds go into them that are the slightest bit moist, the mold probability is much higher than in the paper envelopes. When I was at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in London this summer, there were at least as many people (okay, women LOL) getting their picture taken with JD as there were people of both sexes getting their snapshot with the Queen. It's good to be gorgeous.

The game wasn't played the way it should have been...The Goths would still be here had they used their heads. I like them a lot...I like everyone and have no favorites this year.

I was at my brother Ray's for dinner tonight and I missed it too. I was so looking forward to watching it but I forgot all about it. Oh well, I got to watch the movie about the house without a Christmas tree with Jason Robarts.

lily that's what dh said..if they'd use that roadblock on the couple they knew were behind, they would still be here...we don't have any favorites either...bet that dad will hate every cross word he's said to his dd...

It was a great episode, but I was kind of sorry to see the Goths leave. They worked really hard at staying in it and got along so well with each other(except for that blip last week in the car.)

The great equalizer that they have in every episode just drives me nuts. If you have a 5 hour headstart, don't get excited, it's guaranteed that your airport won't open until everyone has a chance to get there. Sheesh.

I was really hoping that Jen and Nate would go last night, their inability to cope with any hardships makes them not winning material in my eyes, but hey- Eric and Danielle won, so what do I know? lol

The challenges were good but easy, I thought. Stringing flowers? No biggie if you have any talent at all. Putting up a wallpaper poster in 6 pieces? No problem but then I used to be married to a wallpaper hanger, I've done a lot of that kind of thing. And the way the father just loses it at his daughter AND the judge, ridiculous. Man, he needs to chill out and just follow her lead.

Delivering the gas cannisters looked kind of hard, easy to get lost, forget the receipts, etc. I thought Kynt was making it too hard with the receipts with the customers. (And how come they didn't have to bring back empties?) Leaving the elevator door open was smart on his part, but it sure ticked Jen off! lol Is her partner worthless or what? Has he done anything well yet?

Anyway, a good show, too bad the Goths had to go. I'm rooting for the Grandfather, Grandson team. I like the daughter but can't stand the father. I like TK and Rachael OK, but have no great feeling for them one way or the other. And I despise Jen and Nate. What a couple of whiners. Ick. lol

I sure hope that father will regret his actions as he is watching the show with the rest of us. No matter how hard his DD tries to deal with him, he is SO ugly. I would like to see her win, but he would have to share and he's not worthy IMHO.

I was also disappointed to see the Goths go. I thought they really respected each other and other cultures. They seemed so genuine with their feelings and positive attitudes. The only time that Vixen came unravelled was when she'd been driving and without any sleep in over 24 hours.

Can't stand Jen and Nate.
DD is good -- dad is a jerk.
Grandfather/grandson team are nice enough but they never really say anything insightful about the experience.
Rachael and TK seem fine.

We were pulling for the Goths (and we're 54 years old, not young things)!

It was the Goth couple that were eliminated last night, Glenda. I didn't care for them personally but felt they played the game very well, so was sorry to see them go.

Hi Kids,

Well, as I said in my OP, I was disapointed in the ending. I thought the Goths were a good team but they sure messed up that U-turn. Even with that, it looked like they almost made it to the Pit Stop in time. They had a positive attitude and they like each other. They even made the most of their 'Speed Bump'! I hated to see them go.

Nate and Jen are almost funny with all the complaining they do. I hope they are the next to go...but I've been saying that for a few weeks now. They both whine, yell and act like children. I hope they are not in the final three...

I like the Grandfather and Grandson but I agree with Cameron, it would be nice to hear something insightful from one of them. But then again...they ARE both male.

Father and Daughter are good but he is just AWFUL with the way he talks to her. I hope this is a learning experience for him...how could it not be when he sees himself on tape!

TK and Rachael are OK but I don't see much strength in them.

It was a good show last night but, we are getting down to the end...YIKES...it feels like we just started! Who do you think will be in the final three? Any talk about when the next Race will start? I hope we don't have to wait until next Fall.

I was sad to see the Goths go, I still do not understand why they did not U Turn Nate and Jen, I do not like her she is disreceptful to the people of the conutries they travel in. I hate it when she stands in the middle of the street and yells and getting all weird about the dog was BLAH!!

I have no favorite at all. It even seems a bit boring to me this time around.

Nah, he'll just claim he looks bad because of the way it's edited!

It's a shame, too, because the daughter is actually one of the best contestants to have ever been on the show.

I'm sorry if I spoiled anything. But it was 7 hours later when I posted and I thought it would be okay by then. ..I hope Jen and Nate don't get married..I like TK and Rachel. They are very even tempered, but I really liked the Goths. They were kind and smart but not smart enough. Why would they roadblock some one when they didn't know where they were in the race but did for sure know jen and Nate were behind them.
