I think I'm getting increasingly chemical-sensitive.

I never considered myself to be chemically-sensitive.....only a couple of times I can remember, like when I had to out-gas a new printer. But all of a sudden I'm finding certain scents to be rather sickening. I used to think my Air Wick fake candles, with their vanilla or lavender scents, smelled good, but now I've unplugged them. And I threw out the Midnight Pomegranate hand soap that formerly resided at my kitchen sink.

Does anyone know of an unscented liquid hand soap? I've resorted to putting a bar of unscented Dove at the sink, but I'd much rather have a pump bottle.

Anyone else have difficulty with certain scents? Fortunately, my Chanel No. 5 isn't a problem. (Yet.)

This must have something to do with my age. Does anything (besides wine) get better with age? :-)

yes I don't like perfumy things...
bounce is awful!
all those so called airfresheners hurt my sinuses.. some scents are okay, like lemon, or orange.... but all the lavendar, lilac, blech some make me feel ill, and headachy. I don't like soft soap.. sorry..

Women get better with age, Susan!! If you didn't live in Pennsylvania, I'd have some wine sent to you...

As for the unscented soap in a pump bottle -- YES! Hugo Naturals makes all sorts of wonderfully scented products (I especially love the Vanilla and Sweet Orange), but they also make unscented products, too, including liquid soap in a 12-oz pump bottle. There's also unscented body lotion... I'll include a link to Amazon.com, where you can get a good deal on the stuff.

fairy: I was having tremendous problems with my guppies (when raised them 30 years ago no such problems) always getting this or that. They scratched as yours are, but no spots indicating ich, so from my research can be parasites/bacteria - without a microscope who knows for sure - but many problems making it seem like a nightmare, not the guppies I had as a kid, lol. First group had horrible gill inflamation and died shortly (pet store not exactly healthy source). Seems inbreeding and more toxicity in today's water makes them more vunerable them before. Then after doing much serching on the web, started aging and filtering my nyc water (horrible water). Now in mint condition. No more flukes, ich, or what ever they had before - many many problems prior, dropped like flies. I have a huge fluval (sp) filter with chemical remover pad and activated charcoal, and put filtered (from shower head) cold water in it (hot may have toxic chems from water tank). Made a huge difference. From the copious research I did for my guppies, it seems they are more delicate then ever before, and now I use them as indicator fish ie if they get sick something is wrong with my water... This is only my experience, but plants (they like the algae) aged (I try to use after 3rd day at least) triple dipple filtered water, plus a little aquarium salt and higher ph, made a HUGE difference. Actually no more deaths since... (well expect some from old age at some point, lol) Best to you... Sherry

Thank you, thank you -- all of you. I am going to try to post some pics I took today. I am hoping they will be more revealing. Sorry that last one is so blurry. Berndoodles, thanks for the pics of leaf hopper damage. I think I certainly have that, don't you (referring to the pic with the lovely bugs)? I also found some webbing, so I think maybe I have spider mites. Oh, joy! And I also think I have powdery mildew. I would love anyone's advice. I sure wish I had a flatbed scanner. My daughter has one, but she is out of town. And I wouldn't mind if we had a Bug Man out here in Colorado. However, I took samples to my local nursery and the very nice rose lady there confirmed that I have several separate problems. She thought that the drooping rosebuds were caused by thrips and told me to go home and cut all of those drooping buds off and dispose of them. She thought I had powdery mildew, too, and also spider mites. She advised that I use Bayer All-in-One spray, so I bought that, but after reading the instructions, I decided to try Neem Oil because the instructions said not to use when bees are active, and they are very active on Ballerina, at least during the day, but maybe I could use it at night. I sprayed yesterday very thoroughly with Neem oil and will repeat in 7 days. However, since my roses are so badly infected, and with multiple buggies or whatever, maybe I will have to go toxic. Another problem with me using a toxic spray is I have large pots of herbs close to Ballerina, in fact right beside it. I think I could cover the pots with black trash bags or something. But I also have black raspberries whose vines are kind of intermingled with one of my New Dawn climbers. I'm not sure if I can cover all of them enough. Maybe if I used a hand sprayer rather than a hose-end sprayer it would be easier. So what do you think? Thanks again. Marlene

I have a Black Willow (Salix nigra) in about a 15 gallon pot, that I intend to pot up to a 25 gallon next year. So far, it has done well. I did forget to water it at one time in early summer and it dropped all of its leaves. I thought it was a gonner. I scratched the stem to see if the cambium layer was still okay, and it appeared to be. I resumed watering it, trimmed off the dead portion of the stems, and it grew back just fine. Willow is extremely easy to root. If you can find some close by, you can cut a few 3' stems, and stick them in some dirt, watering them daily, you will probably have roots in no time. Willow contains a chemical that promotes rooting and is often used as a "rooting" agent when attempting to root difficult plants. So, it has an unabashed desire to perpetuate. For me, I only grow the one because these trees are dioecious. I don't want to end up with a male and a female that produce seeds. I don't have enough room. Willows are also know for their need for water because it is not recommended that they be planted near sewer and/or water lines. The roots will more than likely seek out these lines, get into them, and can cause a lot of headaches and damage. I think the Blue Arctic Willow is supposed to be hardy thru zone 7, but it still may be too hot in Missouri to grow them well, or for any length of time. Probably would do fine in the Northwest's zone 7 - very different from Missouri, though. I know I wouldn't attempt it in my zone 7a because we just get too hot on a consistent basis. Good luck! Susan

Nothing wrong with the smell of bacon IMO! I could handle bacon cologne & perfume. Far better than that jug perfume in which old women insist on marinating themselves. Guess they're trying to cover up the "old people" smell. I have avoided scented detergents for a long time and haven't used fabric softener for 10 years or more. I don't like my clothes to smell. When they smell, it tells me to wash them. And the detergent aisles make me cough. AFAIC they should have the detergent and sell the little bottles of stench you can add to it. But if you've ever been around old people, there's a lot of them who can't have a sense of smell. And IMO lilacs should be outlawed as a noxious weed. It's certainly an obnoxious weed. That is probably the worst stench there is.

Thanks, Lindsey! I bet those scents wouldn't bother me, now that I think about it.......it's just the cheap ones that are killers! My DD gave me some Crabtree & Evelyn scented hand creams that are just fine.

Yeah, stupid Pennsylvania won't let anybody send me wine. :-(

Kat, it's good to know I'm in good company!

Oh, PS, Lindsey: I brought a bottle of wine to my Christmas Eve hosts with the admonition to drink it at home. It was a syrah-grenache with an alcohol content of 15.5%. Hee-hee.......

Especially a new scent Denny got me for Christmas..it's called Euphoria....umm umm

Susan, I've also become more and more chemical sensitive over the years. It started about when the RA reared its ugly head, allergies are part of auto-immune trouble. Candles are what I miss the most, and I cannot even think about using any of the Orange Glo products to polish or clean. My Chanel No 5 and Pleasures are the only two colognes that don't seem to get to me....but the perfumes can. . . it is constantly evolving.

Wines can be sent into PA but only to a state store, not sure exactly how they work that.

I'm the same way. Most scents make me sick, especially perfumes/colognes, and cleaning products,etc. My good friend's husband is extremely sensitive to any scents and I know she has scent free everything...shampoos, lotions, cleaners, etc....so they are out there somewhere!

I use Ivory liquid hand soap - I buy the 16 oz. refill bottle at the supermarket and use it in my foaming pump dispensers.

Hmm, I thought I responded to this last night, but now I don't see it. I was suggesting the Method brand of cleaners, most of which you can get unscented.

I am having the same issue, sort of. For example, I bought some laundry soap the other day. The boys brought it into the house rather than leaving it in the garage. It sat on the counter for a few days and the smell was gagging me! I have never ever had this problem before! I don't notice my clothes having a smell after I was them, just the soap in the box. I don't smell it in the laundry room either. But that is probably because the 5 dogs sleep in there sometimes. I also had an issue with the bag boy at the store putting my dryer sheets in with a loaf of bread. The bread smelled so bad to me I could not eat it. I had one piece and I swear to you it was like licking a perfume bottle. I am going towards non-scented things more and more.

Soft Soap makes some pump bottles of "free and clear" type..

I have one child very sensitive to chemicals..Hand Sanitizer will send where ever it contacts into immediate hives.
He has alcohol swabs for when he can't wash his hands.

I now make my own hand soap. I bought some from the health food store made with essential oils and simple "soap" ingredients..in a foamer bottle..then bought some foamer bottles and a liquid soap base and make my own.

I absolutely hate walking down the laundry/detergent aisles.
Unfortunately, my local store stocks the pet food in that aisle so I have to.

I don't like any scents. I don't use fabric softeners (I use vinegar as a rinse) and I make my own liquid detergent (as do many others here). I like scent-free clothes.
I collect empty laundry jugs in my building, and the smell of some of the brands is horrible, when I rinse them out. I wouldn't want to walk around smelling like that!
My hand lotions are unscented, and I try to use an unscented liquid hand soap as well.

Sometimes there is even a big difference between unscented and fragrance free products. Sometimes even unscented things smell, so most of the time here we have to make sure things are completely fragrance free, no smell what so ever!

I think I'm getting increasingly chemical-sensitive.
