How's your posture at the computer?

I try to sit up straight and hold my stomach in, but I end up slouching. My legs are crossed and the chair scooted back a bit. My keyboard is on the desk top so I lean forward a bit to type. The small of back hurts most of the time. I think it's because I slouch too much while sitting here. I have a wooden bowl turned upside down that I can put a foot or both feet on. That helps a little.

Do any of you have problems with your computer posture, or any solutions/advice/suggestions?

I don't use the best posture at home, because I'm on a glider, on a lap top. At work though, my desk is set up in a pretty ergonomic way. Your back, thighs, and lower legs are all supposed to be at 90 degrees from each other. You're not supposed to rest your wrists on the wrist rest (which seems strange), and your eye are supposed to hit at about the level of the top third of the monitor. At least that's what the kinesiologist at our corporation says.

Frazoo...when I sat at my desk at work, the keyboard was on my lap, my legs stretched out, resting on an overturned waste basket. I had a desk chair with lumbar support.
At home, i'm sitting in a recliner, with my feet up, and my laptop on my lap.

I, too, have experienced the word mismatch phenomenon. And like you, I tend to both replace and remember them through the syllabic rhythm of the word. Alliteration is also a big troublemaker. I don't know exactly what I do to break the block. I can't remember :) I do know that in order to remember some stuff, I have to put it into context - play back a situation in which I used the word, addressed the person by name, etc. I remember scenes vividly, more so than chronologies, names, dates, etc. It's almost like I can see them played out like movies in my brain. Sometimes, if I forget the name of something, or the chronology of events, I'll replay the scene in my head. To remember songs, I latch on to one bar or word that I can remember, and try to hear it in my head. But most often, I usually just ask someone :) I have two friends with phenomenal memories, and they're big helps. In fact, in one of my last posts on the grammar thread, I couldn't remember the word "supposably" (one of my peeves). I just called up my friend, reminded her of a casual conversation we'd had about two years ago when I'd mentioned that I hated it when people mispronounced that word, and she remembered exactly which word it was. People with good memories freak me out. They say that coffee and cigarettes can help with memory. I've never found that to be the case.

Hello Everyone, I agree with you on the different personalities!!! They all seem to do what they want, even when we try and fix them when potting up or even repotting. I have some that look awkward, but i do enjoy them as a whole because it is their own beauty!! I tend to try and fix trees that have a lean, but i also respect the true nature of the tree that wants to express their own way of growing. I do love Bonsai, so i understand that all trees have their own beauty in themselves. One has to understand that all trees are beautiful in nature and the way we view them. Bud G. has the most beautiful trees that i have seen. The size of his trunks are so impessive and the beauty of the shape of his trees are the best trimmed trees thst i have seen here in the U.S. I am so pleased to have had the pleasure of visiting his home and also seeing Bills trees. They were the highlight of my trip to Costa Mesa.. Thank you Ellen for this post!! I love to think about the way trees grow and to look at the natural beauty of each tree. I'm glad I'm not slumpy all by myself. :) Hats off to those of you who have this down. I thought it was shoulders back and down, head up/back/straight. ?? I had someone tell me recently your head should be somewhat down.? Why I don't know, but I admit to feeling funny pushing my chest out. Well not really PUSHING my chest out but standing correct is pushing it out for me. I also will slouch more if I'm having an unattractive day. I definitely find sitting more of a challenge than standing. Once I get tired of the positions, which doesn't take long, I get sloppy about sitting right. After I noticed that lady at the game I only payed attention to myself for a few days and forgot about it. I finally made peace with my broad shoulders when I cut my hair off but also noticed my upper back was more noticeable with no hair covering it. Especially with short sleeve shirts where the back scoops down a little. Hopefully you know what I mean! Shirts that don't cover like a sloppy (but comfy!) t shirt. I also then noticed my back has the potential to look like my Mom's if I'm not careful. She's slightly overweight and doesn't stand up straight all the time. Has that tiny hump thing going on. I have the Winsor pilates dvds at home and a few years ago was doing them everyday. I actually did feel longer, leaner, and taller but got so BORED with them. I think it's easy to get bored with any workout video though. Tried it about a month ago and my back really hurt afterwards. Don't really know what's up with that. Probably just not used it. My sister left me borrow a yoga tape and you all would've laughed if you could've seen me. I'm not flexible. At all. I found it hard and boring and gave up pretty quick. Our gym has zumba and other cardio type classes but I don't think pilates/yoga. I should get into adding those to the workout schedule at least once or twice a week. As far as watching tv in the evenings my feet don't even touch the floor when I'm sitting on the couch so they're normally tucked under me. I do want to get an ottoman but that's not really going to help with my posture. I'll just have to keep correcting it often and strengthening my core. In time it should pay off.

The usual boot of the computer is one thing that I hadn't thought much of ... and thanks for the info: I was surprised that it was traceable to the good Baron Munchausen! As for the occasional use ... it depends how mad I am a it! One doesn't want to boot hard enough to break one's toe, though ... so great care is indicated, despite the anger, when wearing slippers. As for the "How do you do?" when greeting someone: in earlier times major hunger was often somewhat widespread, and there was more disease, with much less effective treatment available, than in modern times, so inquiring after someon'e health and well-being was more important than recently. In countries where hunger has been common more recently, e.g. Korea, a common greeting was, "Have you eaten (rice)?", with sometimes the "rice" included, sometimes not. ole joyful

When I moved, I gave up my HUGE desk (really no place to put it). The chair that I used with that desk is to wide, for where my computer is now. I just could not get comfortable with/on it.

I started sitting on my exercise ball. You know, one of those really big balls.

It is actually comfortable to me, but my butt gets cold. I am looking in to making a fleece cover for the ball. :)

I can sit here for a LONG time, without any discomfort otherwise.

I have bad sitting habits!! I usually sit at a side angle with my legs crossed. That makes my neck hurt after a while, but I don't have sense to sit straight on.

sometimes I'm almost laying down. I sit my butt near the front of the chair and stretch my legs so they reach the wall. The heat register is there and it keeps my feet toasty warm. If my typing teacher could see me now, she'd hit me upside the head! hehehehe

What posture? At work (I am a CSR dealing with people across a counter), the stations are supposed to be ergonomic but I don't find them at all comfortable. We are face to face with the customer, receiving their information and having them sign forms then we turn on an angle to use the keyboard/screen. The chairs are wide & comfortable if you didn't have to change position every 2 or 3 minutes. I find that I sit on the front third of the chair so that I can do all these things with minimal movement. Because I am in the public eye, I try to maintain good posture ... shoulders back and down, back straight but if the office is empty, the back is relaxed and I can sit back in the chair.
At home, I have a decent office chair but again, most of my time on it is spent at the front edge. I'm sure my back isn't as straight as it should be but my legs are close to the correct 90 degree positioning. As a matter of fact, I rarely cross my legs. I already have 2 or 3 bulges on my left calf from varicose veins and certainly don't want any more.
I have tried the egronomic stool, the one that you rest your butt on the seat with your knees resting on supports {{!gwi}} and it works but because I'm a "woman of size (large size)", it isn't comfortable for hours.

My son has that ergonomic chair, and he loves it. I find it strange to lower myself onto, but I've never really given it a good try.
