Did You Get Yours? (Social Security Letter)

My DH got his- regarding the 2012 COLA- cost of living allowance. His social Security net check is going up by $56.10. Let's see, what can I spend it on? Maybe it'll pay for half our phone bill. Or a nice restaurant meal for one of us. It's the first increase Spcial security has given in three years. Wow! Did you get your letter yet?

I think it's because government checks, disability or social security, are always issued on the first of the month. It may take 60 days or more to get everything squared away. May would have been too soon. Were you having it directly deposited to your checking account? If so, you might want to check with your bank. Who was the letter from? That would be the clue as who to contact. I would think that the Social Security Agency where you had the hearing would be the best place to start. If this is the usual SSA retirment payment, then you might have a wait of 90 days. I know that those retiring at age 65 are warned to apply 90 days before their birthday.

Just an update. I am now drawing my SS disability and it has made a big difference already in our finances. We were able to pay our car off with the back pay. Our son and DIL are really struggling and need a new stove, so "Santa" is coming to their rescue at Christmas. It's better to give than to recieve and since I received my disability, I want to give them a present they really need. I truly am blessed this year. Merry Christmas to everyone.

Retirement appears less and less likely for many people. Wages have barely improved in decades and the cost of living is going up, tempting some people to retire overseas. It could be done, but there are a ton of plans one has to make first. One can always retire abroad for much less. It's good to think that Social Security still pays benefits to overseas retired persons, though taxes on that income in a new home country may apply as well as to the United States.

Ken, It is only 2 years old. I have a lot of over crowded iris around it so in a month I will be digging them out and making room around the Ivory Coast. I'll chop out an eye for her later in the Fall. The way this has grown I don't think it will skip a beat. I have 3 others and with the extra elbow room it will fill in nicely. From her car it seemed to me she wasn't that well off. She offered to pay, but I told her I wouldn't charge her. If she comes back and asks for more I will just tell her sorry and give her some tips on where to shop. - Jon

My friend had a bigger check but didn't know why. Guess thats it. She didn't get a letter.

My official notice arrived to day. It gave the new amount and how much would be charged for Medicare. About a month ago, I got a notice that thie letter would be coming.

Yeah, the Part B Medicare premium will be $99.90. Fortunately there's a law that says nobody's check will go down. And the increase is paid starting in January.

Got mine yesterday. It may not be much but every little bit helps. Figure it will pay for a tank of gas each month or a couple of lunches out with my friends.

Not me - guess I live in the wrong place.

I got a slight increase in (non-contributory, but residence requirement) Old Age Security and (contributory: employer and employee) Canada Pension Plan this year.

But when I went to get my blood test this morning ... they asked for my health card, but no money.

The various tests and treatments for the clots on the lung somewhat over a year ago, have cost me nothing directly, and I have $100.00 cost per year as I need drugs, plus about $2.00 - 6.00 or so per prescription for the rest of the year.

I got mine early, telling me I'll be charged $200/mo. for Medicare, and my S/S check will be reduced by $103. I posted about this at the time. I'm slowly adjusting to the news. :-/

I got my letter yesterday. I will be happy to get the 3.6 percent increase. I see that my Medicare premium went up $11 to $99.90 but my State of CA pension will increase to cover that cost.

I haven't gotten a letter yet, but there has been a lot of talk about it among the residents here at the retirement
community.

Because so many of us are in the "older generation" and our SS was based on the rates many years ago, we were making jokes about what the increase would mean for us.

We pretty much decided we should all go out to celebrate . . . maybe at the local hot dog shack!!

Laughter is good for the soul.

DH and I received ours, but so far they haven't deducted for his Part D *penalty*, although they show the insurance premium amount. I'm SO sure they will get around to it!

we got ours...

what it says we will get if there aren't any other deductions is a nice little raise...I'm waiting to see what deductions there may be.

I'll not be too excited until I see for sure.

DH and I haven't gotten our letters, yet, but since so many of you have received them, I guess/hope ours will be coming soon. Even with the two of us receiving Soc. Sec., there probably won't be much of an increase, but--hey--at this point, ANY increase is welcome!
