They're skiing, I'm reading! Book help..

That's pretty much what's happening. In the very near future I'll be left all alone with my kindle. I'm thinking this isn't all that bad. Last year my asthma was a real pain while I was reaquinting myself to skiing and I decided not to ski anymore. I'd rather be breathing with a good book in front of the fire. I'll miss being out with the kids and their buds but at least they can ski into the lodge and visit me from time to time.

My dd want's me to read The Hunger Game series since I'm the only one at home that hasn't. She wants to take me to the movie when it comes out, so I'll bring that one.

What I really am looking for are ideas for a book that is light with some humor. When I'm not helping the skiers or checking out the resort I'm hoping to be sucked into a really good book. Any suggestions for me?

One of the best books I ever read. The Courage Tree. I think the author is Diane Chamberlain...............check it out

I plan to make all my seedlings (that I can handle) flower, then force them for the following year, and give away. I already promised the first one for Cindeea, for she sent me seeds, the second one for Maria, for her seeds... And then the rest will go to Project Angelfood. Hopefully they will see it as a nice gesture and not an unnecessary burden. :o)

Thank you again everyone for the kind words. :) Where am I going to put all of these ? That certainly is the $64,000.00 question !!! I counted yesterday: 31 different types in pots 3 of those pots are Andrew 33 pots total 3 different types in the ground 3 Elegans (stationary, not moving them) 2 Wide Brim 1 Tiny Tears 5 NOID in ground 3 clump #1 3 clump #2 1 ½ clump #3 1 mature mini no ID 1 mature mini no ID TONS of Elegans seedlings we dug up out of the front bed and put in the back. That is all the hosta on the property. So I have about 31 places to find for all the new additions. This does not include the 40+ I have still “to order” on my wishlist. As of today 7/29/12 I have only one bed clear. Initially I feel like I want to panic . . . but the flip side (for me at least) is I am not necessarily in any hurry to get them in the ground. I would almost prefer to let them get a few years in pots where I can coddle them and take my time finding just the right spot. So, in theory I believe I have enough room for them all (plus more) but it may be a good long time before they get placed in a permanent position. When I started this project I knew it would be a long hard road to beautification. My goal is to work with as much already existing in the ground as feasibly possible. I will be ripping out a lot of established shrubs and moving existing perennials, but more so to rearrange and start over. There is an existing design that was originally landscaped into the yard, so I will be working with that and adjusting lines and height as needed. But for the most part I am settled into a very long project with no real agenda. I will of course keep you all updated as to any progress that is made. This year though is rather uneventful since I am still in the process of amending and clearing out the first bed so that I can be ready for a spring planting. Here are some glamour shots of “The Jungle”. This first one is a pic of me in the process of clearing out the first bed. These were all taken in early June. And here is basically the jist of what it looked like before I mowed it all to the ground . . . The next grouping are of the section of yard that leads up to the side porch. This I don't think ever had anything planted in it. There is a bed separating the two sections of the front yard so you can't get to this part without going around the house and coming off the side porch. The Hosta in the picture are of seedling Elegans and one of my MIL NOID. It is still too young and neglected to pitch here for proper ID. So all in all I def have enough space to keep me plenty busy for a very long time. Plus we are having an arborist come out in the winter and trim a few trees that desperately need it as well as remove a few that are too close to the house. So there will still be a nice canopy but I will have a lot more light coming through starting in 2013 and that is also something I am going to keep my eye on for plant placement. Gonna get it. My dd was diagnosed 2 summers ago with an autoimmune disease we'd never heard of and happens to be very rare. I think I've mentioned it here before. It's called Relapsing Polychondritis. I'll read anything about autoimmune diseases or what can be done to help someone that suffers from them as this has hit home.

Amazon has this book in both new and used. There appears to be two versions. One is the movie tie-in. That's available used starting at $9.85. The other version is available used starting at $8.25. I think Bossy Pants is one of those books - you either love it or hate - I read about 2 chapters and returned it to the library.

Toni, have you read the Janet Evanovich books? Start with One For the Money, or whatever it's called. Then Two, then Three, etc. She's up to 18 now. They are silly, fun, light-hearted.

Want something meatier? Killing Floor, by Lee Child. It's the first in a long line of kick-butt books. My entire family loves his books.

Have fun at the ski lodge! Toast your tootsies and enjoy your family. :)

I just checked to see if David Niven's two memoirs are available for the Kindle. They're not, unfortunately. He was such a wit, as well as a kind, intelligent person who led an interesting life, and his books had some hilarious parts.

Flamey, I have enjoyed several of the Stephanie Plum series. It's been so long since I've read the first one that I might just have to re-read it. A funny quick book, sounds good.

Wish I wasn't so far behind on my reading!

Chessey--I did the same thing with Tina Fey's book. (Glad I didn't buy it!) I get a kick out of her and thought I would enjoy the book, but it was a little too much TF!

I also love the Evanovich series. One For The Money comes out in movie form in three days - On my to do list. They are light reading, fun and easy to pick up. I have read them all!

I do like Joann Fluke's books Joan Hess and Jill Chruchill are also entertaining and Diane Mott Davidson includes recipes in her books.
These are light reading mysteries and worth exploring nothin deep or serious about them just fun

oh yes definitely the Steph Plum series by Evanovich I have read each and every one will not miss those ever.

another great series that fits the bill of light and funny is the Southern Sisters series by Anne George they are great, Ann died a few years back so there will be no more but there are quite a few in the series.

I loved The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Society book. Light, delightful, but not a knee slapper.

Fun and light: anything by P.G. Wodehouse.

Agatha Christie's memoir "Come, Tell Me How You Live" is laugh-out-loud funny. She was a "plus size" woman traveling with an absent-minded archeologist husband in the 1930's ... but some situations (shopping for reasonably fashionable travel clothes? choosing a new purse? packing for your husband?) never change.

Lindsey Davis has a mystery series set in Rome around AD 70. The main character is the equivalent of of private detective. He's working himself out of the lower class, his wife is a Senator's daughter -- so she's scandalously chosen to live below her station. You don't need to know any "History" to enjoy these, because these are about the common people anyways.

M. C. Beaton has two popular series -- quite a few books, easy to find. For her, I'd recommend finding book #1 to start each series because that gives you the set-up, but after that it doesn't matter too much if you stick to proper order or not.

Rhys Bowen has several mystery series I like. The breeziest is her "Lady Georgiana" series set in the 1930's ... Georgie is 32nd in line to the British throne, penniless, but can't "work" for a living lest she bring shame to the royal family. Plus women at that time didn't have many choices when it came to earning their own living.

Steve Hockensmith has an interesting series. What if a very intelligent mid-western cowpoke becomes inspired to be a detective after hearing about Sherlock Holmes? Cool, except this cowboy can't read or write, because in the early 1900's young boys sometimes had to leave schooling early to support their families.

They're kind of hard to find, but Simon Levack has a series of four mysteries featuring an Aztec slave, set in the days immediately before the spanish conquest. Funny, but sort of heart-breaking too since you know the destruction that's coming.

Enjoy your holiday -- sitting in a ski lodge with a book/Kindle and a warm drink while the family knocks themselves out sounds fantastic!

Wow, such an interesting bunch of books to read! I hope others at the Kt are getting some great ideas too. Right after Christmas I'll stock up my Kindle with some of these great books. Can't wait till everyone is on the hills!

I never cared for Fanny Flag, but Diane Chamberlain is one of my favorites. I love the books about the ocean & light houses she writes.

what about debbie macomber's angel books? (her christmas series)
