The cabin by the lake explained

For those of you with Facebook my status this morning was that I was working on the cabin by the lake. Apparently an explanation is desired.

My 91 year old Dad owns a 40 acre woods right across the road from where I live. Dad bought this woods when I was about 8 years old. In the middle of it is a small (2 acre) lake. It's about 13 feet deep at the most. As a kid I loved going to the woods. I spent all my free time there. When my teenage classmates were going to dances and football games and perfecting their social skills I was hanging out in the woods with my dog.

When Bigbaby and I moved back to the farm 8 years ago my own kids enjoyed the woods as much as I did and still do. My oldest son that loves to build things came up with the idea that we should have a cabin at the lake in the woods. Now, back on the farm was an old brooder house. It was used to raise baby chicks. But, it had been sitting empty for at least 20 years and was showing it's age. Bigbaby wanted to torch it. Structurally it was sound yet with lots of usable lumber. My carpenter son said he could tear it down, and rebuild it as a lake cabin. The cost would be minimal since the whole family is a bunch of dumpster divers. This project began in August and he informed me that it could be completed by Thanksgiving. It started out all well and good. Then, he met this girl. Work on the cabin ground to a halt. The first Winter it was just a shell, exposed to the elements. When nothing happened in the Spring I started working on it myself as time permitted. But, I'm not nearly the carpenter that my son is. Now, 4 years have gone by. It's starting to take shape. The outside is nearly finished. This Fall I came across a bunch of lumber being thrown away at a construction site in Rochester and got enough to build a deck on 2 sides. There's heat inside. Today I was doing some of the sheeting inside with a toasty warm fire all day. It was beautiful this afternoon. It started to snow and the woods is all quiet.

It is completed enough that this Summer Bigbaby and I spent the night down there. A heron came and sat on a dead branch right outside the window at dusk. There was also a Kingfisher down there. Unusual for us here. Being in the middle of the woods there is lots of wildlife around.

I apologize for this becoming such an essay. Can you tell I love the woods? Every time I walk across the road it's like a mini vacation.

Just the floor in place.

Walls going up.

Just a couple weeks ago.

It still needs to be painted and someday the deck will have a railing.
