After 20 years, another grandchild!!!

I was 47 when my granddaughter, Elizabeth, was born. Liz turns 20 next month, and I'm happy to report that my son and his wife are expecting a baby later in the year, in July!! They're the ones who eloped (remember?) in August. They wasted no time starting their family. (Guess you can relate to my surprise and excitement, Sandy in Iowa!) :-)

I'm a grateful Grammy!!

Congratulations! I was 44 years old when my first Granddaughter was born, now I will be 76 years old when my second Granddaughter will be born! Yea for both of us!

Why don't you just pick the pumpkins when they are ripe and not leave them to rot in your yard. Also if you leave them in your yard you will not get new pumpkins. What you will get is a mass of seedlings (20+) in one spot and since there are so many so close together they are stuggle to survive and produce weak plants that will eventually die. The problem is if squirrels or other critters spread out the seeds. I have a cacao tree in a huge pot in my yard and a squirrel planted a dozen or so seeds about 4 inches apart (which is still too close but you get the idea). Also if you till the area this will spead out the seeds. On a side note you absolutely should move your pumpkins to another area next year. If you keep your patch in the same spot you will find that it becomes infested with all sorts of bad bugs (bad for your pumpkins).

ÂIs it true that winter rye cleans the soil of destructive nematodes, or adds beneficial nematodes, can't remember which.....? **** No, not true. Ebon rye has been suggested as a cover crop that might help lower the population of pathogenic nematodes. But I have many friends, especially in CA, who have bad Root Knot Nematode problems and several in the past have done controlled experiments with Ebon rye and found little to no difference. No, it doesn't encourage beneficial nematodes. Ppod, you don't have RKN problems where you live and you know I know where you live. LOL About TMV. As Dave said the strains of tobacco grown in the US , and that's at least for the past 20 years or so, are TMV tolerant. But Turkish tobacco is not TMV tolerant. Sudzy, in any case TMV is transmitted, or was, primarily by insects and these days any transmission is manual and occurs in large commercial greenhouses. But growing in one spot every year is not going to predispose plants to TMV b'c it's not out there to worry about any more. CMV is and many folks confuse TMV with CMV b'c the two viruses can exhibit similar symptoms. Growing in one spot can predispose to a build up of foliage pathogens, but I spoke to that in a post above in this thread. Carolyn

Over 10 years ago I had to have a double mastectomy. When they originally went in there were not sure if it was cancer-turned out both breasts were completely full of pre-cancer. They removed all of the tissue (left my nipples-but scraped them). I had a friend who had also had to have this done and 2 year later she died from cancer of the ovaries. When I met my husband (we've been married less than 2 years) I was having problems with them leaking-common after about 10 years, and knew they would have to be replaced. WE married and he picked the surgeon (works with surgeons so said he knew the best). I had the surgery and I feel they look and feel better. This was a year ago this month. The only comments he has EVER made are painful. Such as; well you know you have a dent in this side, they are not the same side, they should have more projection, he should have done this... I think he could have done better....never one kind loving word. I have cried and cried and begged him for one kind word. Never. I have even explained to him that if he could look at me through the eyes of love maybe he would be able to say some thing nice. I know in the past relationships he had breasts are a biggie for him-bit I guess I didn't realize how big. I now cannot find it within my soul to have a physical relationship with him. Because when he does touch me (not very often) it just reminds me of what he has said and how he reacts to me when he walks in and I have my bra off. I feel ugly and hurt. Today he just left mad-because he says he doesn't understand why I don't want to have a physical relationship-after I explained to him how I feel and said I only think about MY feelings. Am I being unfair. Should I work at displacing my pain -what to do? I feel like I am old and ugly and just an object to take care of a need when he has one. (which is maybe once a month and it didn't start out that way)...what to do or think? Any thought's...

Oh, I've always tried to look ahead. I recently came across a list of milestones I'd made when DS was a baby, going out to when he would graduate HS and when DH and I would be 65. (I couldn't anticipate that my mother would develop leukemia and die seven years after I made the list or that DH would take early retirement.) We had, and dropped, long term care insurance after I ran the numbers about how few people needed it for more than a year. It's one reason I want to help ensure my life will reach a natural end, not be prolonged after *I* am not "in there" anymore. The questionnaire asked about height and weight; marital status; health and longevity of immediate family; access to medical care; educational level; age and accident record of the person doing most of the driving (my DH). Just having gotten this far seemed to carry a lot of weight. I just put "How long will I live?" into Google and several tests popped up. Jim --If we ever do need to turn to robbing convenience stores, *I* will have to be the driver. DH is a very careful driver. I think we'd do banks; more money in it. I'd do jewelry stores, but would have to develop a new circle of friends first. (Jewelry thieves never seem to get caught.) OJ -- We're Americans. We're spending fortunes on medical care as we age. I already budget more for that than for groceries.

Congratulations to you. So happy to hear the good news. We had been married fifty years and in our seventies when we had our first grand. She is now two and her brother is one. Thought our kids were wonderful, but could not imagine the happiness these little ones bring to us. My whole world just calms when I see those little faces. You just cannot have a bad day and look into those eyes.

Oh, how exciting.. I am so thrilled for you. I was 54 when our first grandchild was born. All 3 of our kids were over 30 when they got married. We now have 8.. Fun times ahead for you.

If all us mothers and grandmothers were in the same room we
could be making all those happy little clucking(or maybe it is chattering) noises that "knowing" women make when a pregnancy or actual birth is annouced. Does anyone understand what I am trying to say?

And I would love to have someone new to rock.

Thank you, all! I'm glad to see no one's holding it against me that I encouraged Casey to do the Christmas trivia questions for a whole week. LOL

Yes, Liz is very excited--and her mom actually jumped up and down when she heard the news. The other side of the baby's family has some special excitement going on, too: an aunt- and uncle-to-be, ages 8 and 6!

Susan, that is wonderful news. I'll bet Joey and Leanne are absolutely ecstatic. And you're probably walking around with a big grin on your face and thinking about hooking a rug for the new baby's room or maybe a photo collage too.

I am so happy for you! Just think of all the new baby photos you'll be able to share with us.

How fun for you, congrats. We only have one grandson, which is the joy of our lives. I so love being a grandma. Not sure if I will ever have anymore grandkids so sure am cherishing the one I do have.

Why am I not surprised? LOL That's lovely news.

I wish our children would 'get on with it' a little faster these days. Our DS dated our now-DIL for three years before they married. Then they waited another four years before DGS was born. Now he will be six a month after Baby #2 arrives in February.

Grandma is getting too old to be a lot of fun! (Seventy looms.) I thought *I* was rather old to be a mother when I was 30. When I was born my mother was put in the Gyn. wing instead of the Ob. ward, along with another 'older mother'. She was 36.

Oh, wow, Chisue--the weird things they did to women back then. Your mother would fit right in with today's moms.

I was an "old" 30 when my first was born, too. We were married eight years, but four of those years were spent undergoing infertility testing while we tried to conceive. I feel lucky to have had three children.
