Any hope of getting a doggie door?

You might post on the Pets Forum, but it sounds to me (worst dog trainer in the world) like she gets praised for barking rather than for performing.

I think I'd let her out but not praise her until/unless she "produces".

Definately only give praise for the correct behaviour. Let her out without any fuss at all. If she does her thing then praise or reward her and bring her right back in without another word. If she doesn't do anything, pick her up and bring her in with no praise or affection at all. She's very smart.
She has you trained just the way SHE wants!!!

When we got our Scottie who was housebroken and just a wonderful dog, DH gave her a cookie whenever she went out to Pee. She soon would go to the door, be let out, and come back in - no business outside, just wanted the cookie LOL.

Our dogs do this to me and the kids all the time. Act like they want to go out but then just stand there in the cold doorway and look at you like you're stupid or something. Arhghghghgh.

Susan, I too think you need to praise her only when the deed is done, if you are watching her and you know she hasn't done the deed, maybe say something in the order of words to let her know she should have done her deed. In other words if you know she recently went out and did her deed, just tell her no when she wants to go out again. She may just be doing all this for the special attention.
If it back fires on you and she does it in the house, email me and cuss me! LOL. I will be emailing you soon!

Our dogs would get a little piece of dog jerky when they came inside from going potty. We started it with our Doxie. She is so great! Mac the Chi came to live with us, It didn't take him long to figure that out! He'd go out and glance up and down the street, bark a couple times and come in and run straight to where the treats were and wiggle and jump to get one! LOL We finally quit giving treats all together.

Didn't one of your dogs have surgery awhile ago? How is he doing?

Janie, I don't think she would use a doggie door. She's only 3 pounds and she's very, very skittish. I've thought about and I wish we could do that...

Cheryl, you crack me up!! I never swear, so I'd have to email you and say "DARN you Cheryl! You gave me some bad flippin' advice. Now my dog is going pee pee all over the house, gosh darn it!"

Nodakgal, Tosha did have major surgery on her leg, and she was in rough shape for a while afterwards. Now, though, she is better than she ever was! She will run and play and she seems like a puppy again. She must have been in chronic pain before, as much as it pains me to realize that. Thanks so much for asking.

For Gracie, I guess I will not acknowledge except for opening the door for her, but only praise her for "results". Hopefully, she will figure the rest of this out in less than two years! Thanks everyone for your input and support.

i think i'm glad for cats and boxes, lol...wonder if they've ever addressed that on the me or the dog show on the animal planet?

This from one who has no credentials whatever as a dog trainer.

She barks, wants to go out ... she goes out ... does her business ... comes back in directly (if that's what she wants). She gets praised, and a biscuit.

She barks, wants to go out ... goes out ... no production. This being a chilly time of year, you might disappear from the door and let her cool her heels for a short time. When you return and open the door to let her in, you don't even look at her: she gets no recognition whatever, just ignored. No cookie.

She produces ... she gets rewarded. No production - no recognition and no reward.

At least you've made some progress.

Ara our oldest cats is skittish. When we were in GA I made an outdoor cage so they could go out but not wander off. She was terrified to got through the flap but a couple times a day, I would shove her through it. I was a mean momma, lol! Once she realized she could go out and nothing would hurt her, she loved it. Took a couple of weeks, though.

Awww I'm glad Tosha is doing so good Susan! Those Chi's are tough for having such tiny bodies!
Our Mac must be around 10 lbs, so probably bigger than yours, but boy he's a lil toughie!

Gracie is 3 pounds and Tosha is 5 pounds. They certainly think they're tough and they sure have a lot to say, at times!

That sounds like a good plan, Janie, but Gracie is a VERY slow learner...lol

My dog is six years old, a female Wheaten terrier. It took about two years to fully housetrain her. Grr...she sure was slow to catch on! . Now she's pretty good. She doesn't bark or go to the door to tell me she needs to go out, but she understands "Let's go out" and so I let her out the back door (our yard is fenced) every two to four hours. Works for me and Molly!
