Good luck but the northernmost Windmills on the east coast to have lasted any significant amount of time are around Rehoboth Beach and Cape May NJ, and the only to have lasted a really long time around Virginia Beach and Hampton. So, roughly 1000 miles south of the southernmost point of Newfoundland! Even Martha's Vineyard has been below 0F, and quite recently, too. St. John's average HIGH in winter is < 32F/0C. That's really going to suck the life out of even the hardiest palms. Years ago a guy in the mountains of Colorado did very scientific experiments on keeping Trachys alive and the time factor below freezing was a major player, along with seasonal record low. Because the palms can't be metabolically active below freezing.

Thanks for the compliments! flyleft, The base paint is (Home Depot brand) Behr Interior Satin Enamel; color is "Fall Mood" (PWL-87). It's painted on with a roller (cut in at ceiling and corners with a brush). The next day I put on the glaze coat. I had them mix the top paint to a color that was the same as the base, but 25% lighter. The paint lady recommended 50% or 75% lighter, but I wanted a really subtle effect for the powder room. Anyway, the top paint is mixed 1 part paint, with 4 parts glaze. The glaze is Behr Faux Glaze (No, 748, whatever that means). So I mixed 1 pint of top paint with 1/2 gallon of Glaze (and still had lots left over), then applied the mixture with a rag. You just get the rag wet, wring it a little and then begin pressing it, all bunched up, onto the wall. You can do harder or softer for different effects, and you can do more sparsely or more completely for different effects. I did fairly hard (since it was so light) and pretty completely. Thanks all! We did a lot of investigating of products - our living room looked like a siding showroom with all the samples we had of corners and shakes. DH is in the remodeling business and although he doesn't do siding for a living he knows what he's doing and is ultra picky about product. The one we thought for sure we'd use (Foundry) was not up to his standards when we saw it in person. We went with Cedarway siding but I thought their colors were pathetic and they agreed to do a custom color - so I picked the color I wanted from Alcoa siding and they matched it. Jan thanks for your thoughts on the lattice - Not sure where we're headed with that. As for landscaping - we used to have the most beautiful kerria japonica under the bay and in front of the railing but lost them all last summer to some twig blight :-( You can see the remnants I'm trying to nurse along under the bay but think I'm beat. I need to figure out replacements but have been busy elsewhere in the garden. If you ever stopped by the Treehouse you'd know that you silly girl! I'm wrangling deer! I don't have any pics of the interior, but I'll include more of the exterior. We took these pics before the realtor showed up. Typically they don't allow you to take pics on a walk through. The only downside is not a lot of storage space, it's a tri level, so not a basement per se, but we can always add an addition years down the road. Good to know about replacing septic systems, we were thinking of expanding the house, and now that I think of it, it may infringe on the area where the septic is, so probably not feasible in that direction. Still, there are other options. Izzie, that sounds horrible about your sisters septic situation. I don't think there are any future plans for a city system, but something worth looking into. Thanks for the heads up. I've been told by others in the area that the well water is good. I lived somewhere very briefly with well water, and I had a lot of digestive issues..I chalked it up to food allergies at the time. Immediately after moving, I had no problems. Water softener is comprised of salt, correct? I wonder if it was the water softener causing the problems, or just the well water in general? This was next to a lake. I'm thinking we'll add a small wood burning stove to the lower level, will probably help with the musty smell. I was reading about the pros and cons of casement windows. I don't think these are casement??? Are those storm windows that I'm looking at on the outside (with only exterior removal?) I think some may be up/down sliders, while others are stationary. I have pets that are a little unruly, so I think casement would be difficult since the screens are on the inside. I'm sure my dogs would love to push on the screens. I'm assuming the pipe on the driveway with the reflectors around it (the pic in my first post above) is the septic system? More pics to follow...
