Ham baking 101

I only baked a ham once in my life, and I used cloves. It was then I realized I HATE cloves. So, what I'm needing is your EASY ham baking recipe. Oh, start from the beginning please, and tell me what kind of ham to buy. I wanna bake one for xmas eve for us to munch on. THANKS!!

Try this, you might like it!

Around here it's Dr Pepper Ham.

Here's recipe I found that uses 7 UP OR Dr Pepper

1 (6-lb) ham, fully cooked
Whole cloves ****leave them off
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 cup 7UP (or Dr. Pepper)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 325degrees F. Remove tough outer skin from ham; rinse ham with water. Cut diamond shaped slash marks in fat side of ham; stud with cloves. Place ham, fat side up, in a shallow roasting pan. Combine brown sugar and mustard; mix well. Pat firmly over outside of ham. Carefully pour 7UP (or Dr. Pepper) over ham. Bake uncovered for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, basting every 15 minutes with pan juices. Let stand 15 minutes before serving.

Any ole ham does it for me. I like putting pineapple slices on it, and filling the circles with brown sugar. Then in the largest slow cooker I have, and cook it on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for about 3 hours.

I am not going to bake it and will sprinkle the sugar mix on each package before wrapping. Mostly, the ham will get cut up into bite sized pieces and fried as a topping for greens or eggs (for Dad). My new love is fried ham and greens, I could eat this everyday. The goodness of the kale, turnip or chard is balancing out the unhealthiness of the ham so I'm even, lol! Love 15 bean soup cooked with a ham bone, the bone is the prize of the ham!

I like the combination of ham and asparagus both in crepes and in an omelet with Swiss or brie cheese. When I get down toward the bone, I usually cut it into cubes and grind it in my mini chopper. Some ways to use ground ham: 1) Add ground ham and cheddar cheese to turn twice-baked potatoes from a side dish to a microwaveable main course. 2) Add to hollandaise sauce and pour over a whole steamed cauliflower. 3) Stuff halved zucchini or eggplant with ground ham, rice, chopped tomatoes, seasonings, sauteed chopped onions and the zucchini centers. Top with cheese and microwave or bake. 4) Ground ham can be mixed in when making scrambled or devilled eggs. 5) Substitute ground ham for sausage when making stuffed mushrooms 6) Sprinkle on cooked green beans 7) Mix with some cream cheese and finely chopped sweet red peppers and scallions. Stuff mixture into hollowed out cucumbers, chill and slice 8) Stuff large pasta shells with ground ham, spinach and ricotta cheese 9) Ground ham mixed with cream cheese, a bit of drained crushed pineapple and curry powder makes an interesting filling for tea sandwiches. 10) Saute ham, finely chopped onion and garlic in olive oil. Add drained and chopped cooked spinach. Mound on top of slightly scooped out halved tomatoes. Cover top of mixture with Parmesan cheese and bake. Baked eggs - Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Put about a tablespoon of cooked sausage or ground up leftover ham in a custard cup. Break an egg over it and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add 1 teaspoon of milk or cream. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Serve with toast fingers. Can sprinkle grated cheese on top or add a bit of herbs.

Most supermarkets have spiral cut ready to eat hams this time of the year....I happen to like Smithfield but there are others. Then put that ham, shank down cut side up ( I am trusting you won't be buying a whole ham) into a dish with sides and pour honey over it and onto the cut side.....even open up the spirals where it's cut and put some in there. Teh ham will absorb the honey....and repeat.....and perhaps a third time. Then place that ham in a roasting pan, cut side down! and heat at 325, covered or wrapped in floi until it's just heated through...for maybe a 6 pound ham that would be about an hour. Don't over bake or all the honey will leak out. Enjoy! Linda c

We're having our traditional roast ham for Christmas and I'm serving the hash brown potato casserole made with cream of chicken soup and cheese and corn flake crumb topping (can't make any other kind or there is mutiny from DS - they've had this every year since they were children and since their Mom is gone, we will always make this casserole just this way - the 'kids' are all grown up now and all still make this when they host Christmas dinner :) I'm also making Glenda's pineapple casserole (first time for me) and roasted asparagus. We also always have a green salad and I'm making a couple of homemade dressings (that I don't always bother to do) and one of them will be creamy blue cheese, don't know about the others yet. Ken makes his family's Swedish meatballs too and this time I'm going to try this glaze for the ham, it sounds good. Glenda's Baked Pineapple Casserole 1 (20-ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice 1/2 cup sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 1/2 cup crushed ritz crackers Drain pineapple, save 3 tablespoon of juice. Combine sugar and flour; add cheese, pineapple and pineapple juice. Mix well. Put in greased 8 x 8-inch baking dish. Mix crushed crackers and melted butter together; sprinkle over pineapple mixture. Found it on Epicurious.com, it's from The Blue Room restaurant, Cambridge Mass. It has a creamy base, but you can simply fold in the Roquefort in chunks rather than crumbles. You may also want to increase the amount of cheese. 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 large shallot, minced 1 tablespoon Sherry wine vinegar 1 large garlic clove, minced 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/3 cup crumbled Roquefort cheese 3 tablespoons whipping cream Whisk first 5 ingredients in small bowl to blend. Fold in Roquefort cheese and cream. Season dressing to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

I like the uncured ham from Trader Joe's and DH loves the spiral cut ham from Costco.
Don't use cloves if you hate them.
I have read a recipe that uses regular Coca Cola instead of 7 up or Dr. Pepper.
The ham from Costco has a packet to make a basting sauce but my friend makes it on the stove top and serves it on the side.
My sister generally buys a spiral cut ham from Honey Baked Ham and it is really good, too. Just warm it up according to package directions.

Am I the only one who likes HAM? Not ham covered with sugar or something? I want the meat. Gravy of course is always great. But I just cook it plain. Occasionally a couple pineapple slices are OK or a few strips of bacon but just cook it as it needs to be cooked. Pre-cooked hams just need to be warmed up where the others need more cooking. So how to cook it will depend on the ham. And I like them so smoky that you think you inhaled it through a filter!

I also cook ham without any embellishments. Sometimes I put a few slices of pineapple on the top but that's just because my daughter likes to eat them. They don't really do anything to the ham itself.

This is a ham recipe I have had for some years. Cover a ham in yellow mustard, pat on brown sugar, put in a crock pot and pour root beer around it. Cook until well heated. No cloves called for.

I'm another one who liks my ham plain. And, exactly what does the soft drink do for it? Does it change the flavor, tendereize it, or otherwise enhance the ham? How does the gravy taste with coke, dr pepper or 7up in it? Or, am I the only one who makes redeye gravy to go with my ham? Enquiring mind(s) want to know.
