Update on Mason

We came up on Saturday evening.

I was a bit worried, as Mom's two dogs can be a bit over the top at times. They were, and it was a little cowing for Mason to be greeted with such... exuberance, I guess is the word.

But, everone calmed down after awhile, and pretty soon Mason was getting along just fine with Magic and Tigger.

Mom, as suspected, absolutely loves him. It didn't take him long to wiggle his way into Mom's heart.

the only problem is that he's so huge, and this house is so packed full of crap right now it's not even funny. Over the summer Mom got a call from the jerk at the storage facility where she had a bunch of her books. He gave her three days I think it was, to vacate one of the storage units because it was being razed. He's damned lucky I wasn't up here then, or I probably would have killed him.

Anyway, with boxes of books all around, it makes navigating hard, and harder still because Mason is so huge!

I bet your Mom is thrilled to have you there.
Now I am trying to imagine the drive up there - what kind of car do you drive?

What a jerk to only give your mom three days to move her books.

This is a fantastic thread and thank you to all of the contributors! I find mason bees fascinating. I would like to expand my mason bee housing, I only started last year. I have a couple of questions for DIY houses. I think I would like to go the paper tube route. It seems parchment paper seems to work perhaps better than brown paper bag? I have bags but easily can buy a roll of parchment if it fairs better with moisture (pacific north west). Drilling hole size if I used a solid wood block: If I use parchment, do I drill 5/16" still. With paper bag, do I drill 3/8" as the paper takes up space or still go 5/16". I am going to buy a long drill bit (about 16") and use my drill press to get deep holes. Don't really want to buy 2 bits :) . My other option is to rip 5/16" square grooves in 1" think boards and then line with tubes. The tubes will prevent the spread of mites etc between wood layers correct? This is far faster for me (rip the grooves vs. drilling a solid block) and I already have the dado blade and table saw, as well as the wood. Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Most sites list the different species and among other info there is usually info about their nesting preferences. Reeds, hollow stems, beetle bore holes, ground, under rocks, etc. are listed and some of the info led me to believe that Leaf Cutters Megachili and Osmia have similar nesting habits, the "houses" would be acceptable to both, Osmia for spring and Megachili for summer & fall.

Sophie, Are you saying tuckpointing a whole house for 30k, or just the areas I described? The areas touched included just the 5ft of wall above the garage doors, the top of the chimney and the 30sf of miscelaneous work, which was mostly filling open mortar joints that didn't need to be ground and all at ground level. Last year we had a 24' tall chimney exposed on 3.5 sides tuckpointed with lots of bad brick in the same city and bids ranged between 3000-7000 with the bids higher than 5000 being from contractors that recommended a more involved scope than we ended up going with. With this project we got one bid slightly lower, and although it looked like they did good work, they hadn't renewed their license in our city and were planning to do the job without a permit under the radar. There was one for $12,500 (company who ended up doing our chimney) then there was one from a large professional restoration firm that was up in the stratosphere. The company we went with had been a little higher but really wanted the job and came down to the 10400+1000 coordination base contract+permit We weren't expecting them to come out separately, Our thing is that they already have to come out to fix a few things including the open mortar joints that were missed in the exact same area that they would be working.

That wasn't very nice of the storage facility person to treat your mom that way. She's had enough to deal with without outsiders causing more stress.

It's great that Mason and the others are getting along so well.

Just a thought ... if you could find out where the crummy storage facility owner might be, you and that big boy Mason could take a little "walk" over there, maybe run into him, you know? Hold Mason's leash real tight while you tell the guy how disappointed in him you are, and how he upset your mother ... making sure to appear to struggle with the leash a couple of times saying ... keep calm, Mason, keep calm.

I'm telling you, BIG dogs can be handy to have around! We've got three who are well over 100 lbs., and sometimes just their presence is all we need to give a message!

LOL!

In the meantime, I hope you can find a new place for her to store her books, so you can help her move them out of the way.

Actually, if Mike were to have a small car ...

... and a rope ...

possibly he could save some gas - if he could find a way to tell Mason which way to turn, when.

Almost certainly there'd be an increase in consumption of dog food, though.

Sometimes when I see a person out walking a small dog, I suggest that if they were to get a skateboard and a rope ...

... they could let the dog tow them home.

Several agree ... and usually there's a bit of laughter developed.

Then, we usually agree that the owner needs the exercise, anyway.

No, I know the owner of the storage facility. He and my Grandfather were friends, and my Dad did a lot of consulting work for him over the years.

I'll see him around town and when I do he's going to get one hell of an earful.

He also wanted a bunch of engineering plans back that my Father had reviewed -- they were his archive copies.

No problem...

Only now he pays for them. And pays dearly.
