Anyone had bunion surgery?

Even though I'm still fairly young (32), I have had painful bunions for years. My mom had bunion surgery years ago, but I'm still hesitant to take the next step (hardy-harr-harr) and explore surgery for my right foot. It's killing me...I definitely have swelling on the bunion which has been the worst in the last week or so.

I am so worried I won't be able to care for my 7 month old...should I wait or just do it? I'm a teacher and off for the summer, for the most part, but Brody will be most likely walking by then.... Any advice? Pros and cons?

I've heard a lot of horror stories about the surgery, the recovery AND the results! I have bunions too. I just bought a foot flex rubbery thing that was $9.99 at the pharmacy. I swear it has helped immensely! It spreads your toes and stretches the ligaments and it has really worked for me. I do it for about 10 minutes before I go to bed.

I just had bunion surgery two weeks ago. I am so glad I finally had it done. I had the bunion since I was 29 and I am 66 now. The surgery was a breeze but the recuperation takes several weeks. I try to stay off my foot as much as possible. I have to wear that really cool open-toed shoe for another two weeks. In summer that wouldn't be so bad but we have snow and ice now. My podiatrist did give me a letter yesterday to get a 6 month disabled parking permit.

Hello, Just thought I'd put this out there.. I am very farsighted in both eyes and my left eye is a very lazy eye (meaning very weak vision). I had a new implant in my left eye about 2 years ago but it didn't do much to help the vision in my lazy left eye much. But because of the new lens implant in my left eye my Narrow Angle is not an issue anymore. The fluids are moving as they should now. About my right eye .... I'm 66 and the doctor wants me to wait a little longer before I getting a new implant lens in my right eye. It's my only good eye so she want me to wait as long as I can before messing with my only good eye. But she said I needed to have the laser surgery done because of my Narrow Angle problem. So.... Last week I had the laser treatment done for Narrow Angle in my right eye. The laser surgery is not painful but later after arriving home the numbing drops wore off and I was in discomfort for about 16 hours. The eye felt irritated and burned a little like when you have something in your eye or a scratch on you cornea. I put the drops in as prescribed and the next morning I was ok again, it felt much better. The laser felt like a little pinch in the eye, not very painful at all. I was lasered two times. I'm on a 3-4 month check up now because the Doctor said I'm still at risk for an attack. I understand that some people don't feel any pain at all. I think this surgery is worth having and the discomfort is was not that bad. The Doctor said If I feel any pain whatsoever I should call the office immediately, Do Not Go to a Hospital Emergency Room.

I had an ablation about 6 years ago. I had previously had surgery to remove a couple of fibroids and that helped considerably, but a year later I was still having bleeding issues and I had the ablation. (my doctor had suggested it at the time of the fibroid removal, but I didn't want to do them both at the same time). My periods didn't stop, but I discovered Light tampons, and only needed about 5 of them a month. I haven't heard of women having hormonal problems after ablation. I certainly didn't have any problems with my procedure, which was done with the balloon method. I had cramping for less than 12 hours, then felt fine. You do need to use birth control, because you can conceive, but there is no where for the embryo to implant without the lining, so a pregnancy could be dangerous. I think that it's important to know why you are having bleeding problems. For example,if you have fibroids like I did, an ablation isn't going to remove the underlying problem.

Good responses and help here. First, you have convinced me to have a neurosurgeon, if I decide to have the surgery. The PM doctor mentioned the name of a doctor that he is well acquainted with and worked with when he was doing his residency. Problem there is he is not local, maybe 50 miles away. After your surgery did you need to go back to see your surgeon? I'm thinking that riding that distance could be a problem. Also, did you have MRIs before the surgery, or were CT scans sufficient? I have to admit my wimpiness here, because I don't like the idea of the MRI, and have never had one. I think I would feel claustrophobic. I know they use sedation, and the PM doctor said he would suggest Valium. I have never had Valium for anything. Hi, chemocurl, aka the other Sue. Your description of the disc bursting is how the PM doctor described it to me. He demonstrated it by putting his thumb and finger together and slowly tightening it. The idea of a treadmill is good especially considering bad weather. Wanda, when the problem hit me this time, the pain was like you said, worse than childbirth. I realized I had a problem one day when I was trying to get into a line of traffic from a parking lot, and I could not move my foot from the brake to the gas pedal. I had to wait it out til I finally got it done, and went straight home. Haven't driven since that day. (That was a "revolting development!") Haven't been able to walk much since then either. The odd thing though was that pain was in my right hip. It seems like all of you have had good results, and that is encouraging. I'm really "tough" when it comes to surgeries, which I've had several of, and have never needed help at home afterwards. I think the MRI thing is the problem I need to work on. Thanks to all of you. ALLEUIA,this is the first i've been able to get on here in several days,since i posted that question about the security alert.After i posted that,i could never get back here til now.I was having severe withdrawl symptoms!!LOL Anyway,i need to have knee surgery,and have needed it for the past few years.Dr has suggested that i wait awhile as it really doesn't last for the rest of your life.So i have done that,but am seriously considering having it done this spring.I too have arthritis in my knees,and i'll be 70 in March. My ds had it maybe 5 years ago,but his knees were worse than mine due to motorcycle/dirtbike racing.He got the knees from a cadaver and is doing very well.His recovery was super fast,He had it done on a thursday and went back to work on Monday,at first in a wheel chair for a couple days,then on crutches.He never went to rehab,instead he had some contraption set up in his bedroom at home as he told his dr,i have a businees to run,and don't have time to be running to someplace for therapy,so they got him set up and he did very well.Now you would never know he had knee problems. My sons dr and my dr both told me i should start exercising my legs now to get them strong before the surgery as that will make the recovery shorter and less painful.So ds is going to bring me his stationary bike and set it up in my sewing room.Yipee!! My aunt had surgery 25 years ago, and was supposed to have her other foot done also, but after the first she vowed never to go back....and didn't.

My friend had hers done 3 months ago, and said she won't go back to have her other foot done either!

I understand that the surgery is not the culprit, but the recovery period is the pits.

Sorry but I'm not speaking from personal experience.

I had mine done quite a few years ago, along with other foot surgery and it was a breeze...I had it done on a Friday and was back in the office by the next Tuesday...I wore that fancy open toed shoe and did elevate it every chance I got, but had no problems....Good luck on whatever you decide....

My daughter had the surgery her senior year in high school after band was over for the year.

We decided that she might as well have it while she still was on our insurance. She had pins thru her toe to hold it in place and it looked ugly!

She just called a while ago to say she went back to the doctor and has to have something done again because she has limited movement and pain. She is 25 now.

I thought it didn't look much different after she had it done, but she said there was a difference. She was on crutches for a few weeks.

My friend had it done just before Thanksgiving and is recovering nicely. She took pain meds for three days but kept it elevated and iced. She is a teacher also and will go back to work after the first of the year. Her children are grown so that was not a consideration for her. She is eager to be less restricted and still cannot drive. Overall, she did not think it was too bad.

Anyone had bunion surgery?
