LOL, lots of times. That is why in the end, I usually cut it myself. When Lori still lived at home, she cut mine, and I cut hers. Then, I started cutting it myself.

Ever once in a while I get it done by a stylist... but most times I don't like it... and go back to do my own again. :)

I've only ever had one GOOD cut at a (any) hairdresser's. I'd rather go to the gynocologist's than to a hairdresser's, to be honest. Stopped going to salons over 30 years ago. I just get my poor DH to hack off a couple of inches when my ends get too ragged. He's not a pro, but then, he's free, does as good a job as any of the real professional's I've used, and he's free. Haven't had any hair cut complaints since I started going to Mr. DH

I cut my own. it's shoulder length, I just grab and cut an inch off the bottom. I got tired of going to hairdressers and asking for the same thing. Chin length, layers and taper the sides around my face.

I've have many of them. I'd rather go to a dentist then a hairdresser.

When I find a good stylist, I stick with her for years. When I moved to Iowa it took me over a year to find a stylist who could do my low lights the way I wanted. Fortunately, she is young and own her own salon so she should be able to do my hair for the rest of my life. We have gotten to be good friends.

What gets me is you find one you really like, get used to them, they know you and your hair and THEN THEY MOVE! GRRRRR

I go to those cheaper chains $11 for senior and the turnover is bigtime.

Luckily, Gal I've been using has been there several years, but was off when I needed last months haircut.

I also cut and dye my own hair and DH's. :0) No frustration there.....and yes...it's always good.

I think the last time someone cut my hair was in the 80s and it was a disaster! UGH! I have cut my own hair ever since and my husbands and whoever else in the family needs a hair cut. OH I forgot, my niece cut it a bit a couple years ago. I'll never go to a salon, ever! Finding a good hairdresser is a challenge!

I can't believe how many of you cut your own hair. I'd have to wear a bag on my head if I tried that. I spend a bloody fortune for cut and color at a salon. Costs me $140 every seven weeks. It is my one big splurge. I feel so much better about myself when my hair looks good. I've been going to the same person for years.

I have very long hair and I rarely cut it. I don't have any split ends so it doesn't need it often though I want to trim it soon as it's almost to my waist. I usually get tired of it every few years and chop it all off and donate to locks of love.

I'm starting to get a few gray hairs though so I'm looking for ways to color it naturally as I don't like the idea of chemical dyes soaking into my head for 30 minutes, lol. I'm thinking of henna but it's hard to find salons that do it for hair and I'm scared of doing it myself the first time...has anyone used henna?

I hear you Glenda! It's harder when you move to a new town to find a good stylist than it is a doctor or dentist. I finally found one I can tolerate but I'm not 100% happy with her. I always have to tell them that if they cut my bangs too short I'll have to sue them :0

I have a bad haircut right NOW. I went and got it trimmed up on Sat. but the last gal who cut it, cut too many layers almost to the ends, and I have very fine hair. The ends are but little whisps that I can do nothing with. The only option besides waiting it out is to have it all cut off. My hair grows rather slowly, so that would be a commitment I don't want to make.

I've only had about three people cut my hair in the last 30 years. I just now got home from an appointment :)

The young woman who is cutting and coloring for me now has been doing it about 10 yrs, she had been working for the man who cut my hair and coloring it in his salon - she left and opened her own salon and there was no longer anyone there I wanted to do the color.

She does travel with her husband during the year, but I make my appointments for my next visit as I'm leaving from having my hair done, so no calling and finding out she's out of the country....

This past summer I finally found Lynn, who does razor cuts and makes the very best of my natural waves. I was even letting it grow and having fun with it. Then, imagine, on vacation, she fell off her bike and got a concussion, broken clavical in 2 places and shoulder injury which required extensive surgery!!! Went to WM - huge disaster, then to Penneys, and am working with a gal there, but I want Lynn back. She is still many weeks out, but I am hoping for her complete recovery as soon as possible.

I'm glad to see so many cutting their own hair. I have been doing mine for 30 years. I got a bad haircut and that was that. I've always had a blunt cut bob, but it's shorter in length than years ago. I cut it and my daughter trims my neck up. It's too stressful to give someone control over your hair while you sit and take the results. If I screw up, it's on me . But I never do because I know my own hair. I only had one really good hairdresser in my life . Loved him. That was in my Vidal Sassoon days.

Just about every one I ever got until a couple of years ago! When I was a kid, my mom let the neighbor lady cut my hair. Don't know why. She wasn't a beautician. She'd always cut one side shorter than the other, then try to fix it and make THAT side shorter, and back and forth until I was embarrassed to be seen.

I got my "first" good haircut when I was in the 7th grade. I DID IT MYSELF! At least, it was what I wanted it to look like and I continued to cut my own hair until I got engaged. Had a beautician cut it and was very unhappy. Went back to doing it myself.

Then I discovered the FlowBee. Anyone know what that is? It attaches to your vacuum cleaner and gives a great feathered cut and sucks away the cut hair so there's no mess to clean up. Even when I wore my hair long, the FlowBee allowed me to feather the top and crown area to give it height.

About 5 years ago I decided to go to a "stylist" (stylist means they can charge more money for a haircut, LOL). Cost me a pretty penny, but she was good. I couldn't pay $65 every time I needed a haircut, so I took a picture of they way it looked right after she cut it and took it to another shop and prayed they could at least cut it close to what I wanted. It was..... well, close.

Then, a couple of years ago I had to take Mom in for a haircut and I needed one, too. I decided to give the old lady's lady a try and was very surprised. She gave me the haircut I wanted. And I'm stickin' with her. Of course, she'll probably retire in a couple of years (she IS getting close to that age).

I agree with so much you all say. Even when I find a good stylist they do a good job once or twice and then slack off.

I get a few highlights and my hair cut every 4 months.
I would love to cut my own hair. I am jealous.I hate to go to the sylist. I used to have my mom cut my hair straight across. Those were the days.

When I have to wear wigs I have gotten them cut badly. One guy in Pittsburgh put my wig in a microwave. I was visiting friends and they talked me into seeing him. a $800 wig that he sold me and he shrunk it. I sat with my girlfriends and cried and cried.

Not for the past year......I finally found someone in our town who is excellent and has a great personality, too.
A couple of years ago I called to make an appointment at a new place just down the road......I dialed the wrong number and ended up talking to a woman who also went to Weight Watchers. So I went to her.....very nice woman, reasonable price and an OK cut. So before I got ready to go on vacation I had her cut my hair again. I have really short hair so every mistake shows.
My friend and I went to Sedona and had a massage....my hair was oily so I wanted to get a shampoo. There was a little beauty shop stuck in a far corner of a little mall and the sign said something about walk in wanted and very welcome.
We went in and after the guy shampooed my hair, he asked if I would mind if he trimmed it up a little....no extra charge.
I said yes and told him the story of my WW buddy and the haircut......we laughed. Then he said the reason he offered to trim my hair was because he didn't want anyone to see me walk out of his shop with a botched haircut.
He did an excellent job and got a big tip, besides.
The first time I went to the guy I am going to now charged $45 for shampoo and cut. Very expensive for me but I decided I was worth it. He did a great job. I told him I wouldn't be in very often but only because I was on a budget. He and the receptionist told me next time to ask for a dry cut because it was only $20. My friend pays almost that much at Super Cuts for a dry cut and most of the time it looks choppy. But she doesn't want to change.

I can't say that I have - at least not that I can recall. I've most always gotten a referral to a hairdresser and I don't go cheap. Not that paying more guarantees a good haircut but I don't think you can get away with charging a premium if you're not any good at the trade. The person I go to is self employed and has an established clientele so she's not going any where. Though I am starting to get concerned about retirement. I've gone to the same person for well over 20 years.

For many years I got my perms and cuts at the local vocational school, because we lived just a few steps from the place. Because they had a good teacher/supervisor the work was always done well. Also all work was done by second year students, which may be true at any vo-tech school.

After some years the super retired and a new young teacher/super was hired. She was as good as the first one, and she and I became friends. When I had my first knee replacement, she came to my house for my hair cuts. She is now retired, which tells you how long I went there.

The new super was not impressive at all. I got a perm a few days before my DGS's wedding and it was a horrible mess. I haven't been back, and that was 2 years ago.

I don't like to make appointments, because the day may come and I just don't feel up to going, or it might be raining or snowing, etc. So I go to places like Fantastic Sams (but no more) and WalMart where you don't need an appointment, and have gotten some good perms and cuts, but you can't count on that happening every time.

Even so, there is no place here where you can get a cut for $11.00. Minimum here is $14.95.

I envy those of you who can cut your own hair.

sure.. I bet everyone has had a bad haircut. I will trim around my face and my bangs. I will use the electric razor and clean up the back of my neck. BUT, when I have hair, lol, I like it in an inverted bob and there aint no way I can do that myself! lol

Well the reason I cut my own hair is that I'm a licensed beauty operator though I don't work in a salon. My niece that cut my hair is also licensed but is a nurse now.

I hate those times..but what is worse or for me at least is an inconsistent hairdresser...8 times out of 10 she is great but the other 2 times she is horrid, and I am left with 6 weeks worth of an uneven haircut, and I am not able to do a thing with it. That is why I gave up on highlights. She sometimes foiled my hair beautifully, but when her mood was not so good..my hair suffered.

thistle - those two times she's horrid, I would call within a few days and say 'this isn't working out, something is different with this cut and I'm having problems with it'....my own stylist would fit me in and correct it with apologies and I think most would. Even a bad color can be tweaked to be better, they can add to it if not enough, reverse foil if too streaky, too much. Just something to think about - bad service doesn't go away if you don't call attention to it.

What they can't give you back is your time :)

Wow this is enlightening. I'm a retired salon owner who had over 100 clients for more than 40 years. Haircutting is not an art, it's a formula and, if done precisely, will result in a perfect cut. The problem is that so many small shops don't send their personnel for periodic training. I did and, even though it cost me money, it paid off in revenue to the salon plus I had a happy envirement and no pressure knowing that all my staff was highly qualified and able to do all phases of hair dressing.
So I retire and I sell the business and the building and I"m in your shoes, yikes!!!!! I finally found someone who can cut almost as good as me so I do all my cuts myself except for the lower back which I can't reach due to back pain. She's a peach and doesn't mind and only charges 40.00. I color and highlight my own hair too. I still do my sister and a girlfriend as they beg hahaha. I always told my clients who were moving and had to find a new person to look for people in the area with really good hair cuts and approach them and ask who did the cut. It's the best way.

yayagal, you have mentioned something that is so important - continuing education for these hair stylists.

I watched the television show- I forget the name - where the woman takes over a badly run shop. Good heavens, I can't believe the way the stylists would come to work - dirty hair, badly dressed, chewing gum and shouting to each other across the room. They have no pride in themselves so how would a haircut look. I would leave and wouldn't give them a chance.

I agree, get a referral. Most woman will be glad to direct you to their hairdresser.
