Speaking of Duct Tape ...

Duct tape was mentioned in the Gag Gifts post and it reminded me of last night's Extreme Home Makeover. The son in last night's family loved to make things with duct tape so they made everything in his room out of duct tape and created a duct tape work area with rolls and rolls of tape.

Now I know what one roll of duct tape smells like (it emits a sort of chemical smell), I can't imagine what an entire room filled with it must be like. The kid even commented on how the familiar smell hit him as soon as he opened the door. Sleeping with that stuff surely can't be good for someone. Sure hope he doesn't end up with some kind of toxic poisoning. I'd hate to see this wonderful show get in trouble for one of their creative room ideas.

And then there was the daughter ... in the same family who genuinely cared about the environment and recycling so they created her whole room out of junk they found. The wall art made out of old coffee filters was a bit too much for me. :-)

Sounds a little strange...coffee filters?

They do create some beautiful rooms but they always seem to do at least one "theme" room. I've often wondered how much the families hav to pay to take down stuff when the child outgrows the "theme".

Those rooms sound really strange. Does anyone watch Trading Spaces? The one designer they sometimes use, does some of the weirdest thing to peoples rooms. The one last Saturday was she put 500 hubcaps on the walls. Then there was one episode a few years ago where one of the designers did one wall in a bedroom covered in real moss. Can you imagine how musty that had to smell.
Speaking of Duct Tape. I read in the news recently, there was a passenger on a plane who was getting out of control and the airline crew duct taped him/her to their seat. I thought that was so funny. Dottie

There are several varieties of book tape, mostly reflecting differences in weight. I prefer the very heavy ones; link shows the last one I bought. Staples and similar office suppliers carry book tape, but I'm not sure which types are where. Pls note that most tapes are considered to be a 'permanent' application; I've found that most *are* permanent on paper products but can be removed from plastic; 50/50 whether or not paint comes off with the tape when used on painted surfaces ~ use at your own risk. MASTIC foil tape is acceptable..and it lasts! I use Hardcast mastic tape, but there is also a cheaper brand called Polyken..the mastic backing is thinner than Hardcast, but price is cheaper. Both are sold at hvac supply houses. Surfaces have to be dry & clean. Tape should be pressed well to eliminate air pockets & provide a better seal. Duct tape is for many other things (I reckon...) but not for a long lasting seal on ductwork. It fails in 3 to 5 years. waste of effort although cost of tape is cheap. I believe in getting it right the first time. Best of luck.

LOL! Aren't arts and crafts projects fun! The only way I can visualize ANYTHING in 3-D is to mock it up first, although my craftsmanship isn't as exquisite as yours, lawjedi. Unfortunately, Jill, the only way I've found to simulate life without an existing wall is to actually take it down to the studs. Of course, once that's done you have to hope you like it enough to continue the plan - or live with the wall frame until you get around to putting the drywall back! It also helps to HAVE a plan... We had a lot of fun tearing down the wall between our kitchen and dining room so we could see if it would improve the light in both rooms (it did) but then we had absolutely no idea what to do after that. So we lived with our imaginary non-wall for 8 months while we put together the plan. We're finally starting the project in earnest next week, hooray! I made my final decision on pendant lights for the new island today -- aren't they cute? Our little "demo adventure" will end up costing us a bundle, but at least we'll be able to take blue tape out of our monthly budget!

My granddaughter loves it. Has a ton of rolls. She is now in high school and uses the tape for so many things. There are some great books out there. When they used to go camping she would set up a table along the street and sell her items she made. Often made almost $100.00. She was in a craft fair once and made over $200.00 and this was made by items under $2.00 each. It is great to see young kids doing things like this.

I remember a Trading Spaces where she stapled fake flowers to the bathroom wall. I would not have been nice about that!! I had my shop in a room vacated by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. I was ready to track down the guy that invented staples. I must have picked up over 1 million staples out of the carpet!

Duck Tape: Don't malign it. It has gotten me out of scapes several times especially when traveling by auto.

An example: One year, I bought a car top carrier to haul the lighter, but bulky items for an family vacation trip. Silly me; I did not take the time to make a trial run with it days before the trip. We loaded up the car and installed the family and merrily got under way. It wasn't until we got 15 miles away from home and for the first time got up to expressway speed when the problem appeared. The cross bars whistled! It was driving us nuts. No way could we have stood that all day. I pulled over to the side of the road, got out my trusty duct tape, and closed the ends of the bars - end of the whistle and wind noise. We continued the trip in peace - vacation saved!

Hi jemdandy,

Some peole don't mind occupants of bars whistling ...

... others aren't much enthused about it (after about half an hour).

Interferes with their meditative process as they sip their suds.
