Please - all you Mamma Bears (said with great respect - I'm a mom too) take a deep breath, stand back, and calm down. I have no doubt that that phone call was upsetting and frightening. Your daughter was smart to call you, and I think you were smart to investigate and also for Dad to call back and make himself abundantly clear. If the caller had bad intentions, he now knows that your daughter has a pissed-off no-nonsense male for protection. That can't hurt. But please do consider that the caller may not have had bad intentions. As you noted Bethpen, your daughter was kind to several young men with poor social skills, any one of whom might have made that call without understanding at all how it might have seemed to her... He may genuinely have considered her a friend, and have wanted to reestablish contact and see how her new job was going, and had no idea how creepy it would have seemed. But your daughter's creeped-out reaction may have alerted him to the fact that the phone call wasn't going well, so he declined to give his name for that reason - not thinking how that would make it all even worse... This type of action and lack of insight would be very typical of a young man with autism. This call was a single action, not a series, that was perceived as creepy because it did not conform to social norms. There was nothing threatening in what was said, but the social inappropriateness (that's the nature of the autism disability) created a perceived problem. A mountain out of what could truly be a molehill. At this point there has been one phone call with a message that was inappropriate and yes, creepy, but not actually threatening. Please try and keep that in perspective, and carefully consider the option that it may not have been meant to provoke fear. That said, I do agree with the suggestions to inform HR where your daughter works, and to ask for specific training about how to handle threatening calls. And as for bm calling my phone that is her choice. I guess maybe she figures that dh works later than I do so she has a better chance of reaching sd on my phone? It does not bother me to have her call my cell and I do not really talk to her when she does call. If she calls from a number she has previously called from it is saved in my phone and comes up on caller id and I just hand it to sd. The only time I answer her calls is when she calls from a number she has not previously called from and then it is me saying hello, her asking for sd, and me handing the phone off. Before the days of caller id parents and stepparents answered landlines when ncp called and then passed the phone to child. Same thing! And before cell phones ncp could call landline and if nobody was home they had to wait for a return call, there are times where people are not reachable. So, if we go somewhere and do not have cell with us and a call is missed it is not the end of the world. And if we are home and cell is in another room and we do not hear it and see the call later it is again not the end of the world. Message is given to sd, same as if we had a landline with an answering machine and missed the call. So I guess I am thinking this whole argument on how I should have a seperate phone line for bm's calls is just not going to happen in my case. We have a way to call 911 and make phone calls and many homes today have only cell phones. It is not neglecting the child in any way not to have a landline phone. Sure it may be a little more convenient for bm if sd had her own phone, but lots of things would make our lives more convenient and we still do not spend the money on the conveniences.

But Instead of the calls occurring using the wireless signal of your cell phone carrier, they occur over your Internet connection. You need the right phone and you need to enable the feature in your settings. Other than that, you wouldn't know the difference since it's business as usual and there are no extra things to do when placing or receiving calls. When I am at home, my phone automatically picks up my router and all calls occur over the Internet. This is nice if you are limited to a certain number of minutes a month on your wireless plan, since calls over the Internet don't count against your plan. Not all phones can do this. For example, you need the newest iPhone (6 or 6s), or a pretty new Android model. And a few carriers do not yet make this available to their customers regardless of what phone they have. What phone do you have and who is your carrier?

I just watched CBS This Morning, which I record to watch later, and they had a segment on Social Security scam calls, which is exactly what I received. They said that the calls originate from India and that the Department of Justice is filing for temporary restraining orders against U.S. telecom carriers allegedly facilitating hundreds of millions of scam robocalls, including this one. It's too late for some people, including a woman in Utah who gave $150,000.00 to the scammers before admitting this to her husband. She should have consulted with him before she gave away all of their cash. I can understand how people may fall for this scam, as the callers are extremely intimidating and ruthless. However, I am not easily intimidated by legal threats, as I tend to do very well in court, and so those kind of threats do not bother me - I do not even need to call Perry Mason.
