Drunks who lose their licenses and keep driving

This morning I was at the DOT testing office and one of the employees was telling me about a guy who lost his license for a year for his second OWI and he came in to get an ID card. The guy was really mouthy and rude to the employees. They saw that he drove himself over there. They went out and took the license plates off his car and kept them. I just don't think Iowa is tough enough on drunk drivers. In CA OWIs or DUIs as they are known there, are punished heavily with fines and jail time. IMHO a second OWI deserves more than just one week in jail and a one year license suspension.

I agree with you. They should throw the book at them. What does OWI stand for though, I don't know exactly...

that's absurd...for driving he should go to jail on top of the sentence already given him!

This is just so terribly sad, it is a sad commentary on our 'civilization', I read where they are working on a device to put in cars that samples the breath of the driver and won't start if alcohol is detected. These creeps will find a way around that I'm sure. Several years ago a teen-ager veered onto our yard and mowed down bushes, my hubby went out and placed several large rocks along the edge so if he came back he would damage his car... hubby also drove spikes into a long board and buried it spikes-up along the curb, smart-alec came back weeks later and managed to shred his tires, so I guess we 'got-back' at him....... sally

I have to say despite the way we kids (my brothers and sister) had to grow up we all did better for our own kids once we started having them. None of them (my nieces,nephews and my own 2 daughters) had to go through what we did. They all have drunk free parents and were put as a priority in their family. We knew how it felt so we didn't want to put our own children through it I guess. One thing we (my brothers and sister) all do suffer from though is we do not sleep through the night. We usually wake up sometime in the early morning and find it hard to get back to sleep. I think it is because dad would go on his drunken tyrants many times light at night and come yelling into our rooms waking us up. So we all became light sleepers. But other then that we have all turned out to be productive, happy people that are close nit. You can either choose to let drunks beat you down or rise above them and do better in your own life. I don't get an ego trip from a fancy new car. In many ways I like an older car. Less likely to be stolen. Less concern if you get a ding in a parking lot or get into a small accident. Not a big deal if the upholstery should get a tear and not afraid to carry things in it, or on it. I firmly believe form follows function. I drove mini pickups for many years and they were just perfect for my use. I had to carry a photo studio while traveling. People with cars, well they had troubles! The problem was every time someone would move it was could you and your pickup haul this for us? Or could we borrow your pickup? I wound up getting a mini van that served me well for many years. Problems mounted and not worth putting money into it and I found another used one about 2.5 years old for a great price. At this point the mini vans are functional vehicles for me. I don't care if I look like a soccer mom driving it, it gets me where I need to go, hauls what I need to haul and gets me back home, reliably. Wish it got the same mileage a my last van but that's the price I pay for more power I guess. And I'm not at a point I can't afford to pay a bit more in gas for a little more protection too. One thing with cars, things like brake lines will corrode faster if they're left outside in the colder climates. A garage is a valuable thing to have. Plus if they get the salt and chemicals on them it can raise other issues so there's certain things you need to expect faster maintenance than in other areas, but then other areas have their issues too.

That's terrible, Konrad. We have so many problems with wildlife in our yard (that destroy our trees) too. I shoot a lot of rabbits every year. There are always a steady stream of them in spring trying to set up camp in our yard. Last year we had babies...so adorable. I waited until they were older and ugly before I shot them, ha ha. We have oodles of voles too. Thankfully for us they have usually just killed a couple canes and not the entire plant. We also have mega deer problems. My husband hunts in fall, but of course that doesn't do enough to fix anything! We must have an increase in males lately, this winter we have so much damage from deer rubbing on trees, especially ones positioned on corners or outer edges, in our yard...marking territory I'm guessing. We finally decided to get a dog. Might not help (depending on the dog) but aside from moving, there isn't much more we can do. We've already installed a huge deer fence around our veg garden/orchard and little deer fences around all our more expensive ornamentals. But we can't fence every tree and so the destruction continues!

Ours are called DWI's=Driving While Intoxicated.
Maybe OWI is Operating (motor vehicle) While Intoxicated.

Sadly I think people like this keep driving no matter what - unless they are incarcerated permanently or successfully treated for their addiction.

One DUI - maybe you made a mistake and learned your listen. Multiple DUIs - you have an addiction problem.

I agree with everyone here. It's a real crime when people drive drunk. It makes me feel so sad to think of all the people who have lost loved ones because some stupid fool drove drunk. It's akin to firing a loaded gun into a crowd.

Linda - I know of several people around here that have had muliple OWI's and are still driving. I see them pull up to the bar and stagger in - it just infuriates me!

I really had issues with the last one I saw. I felt like I should have turned him in, but I know they would have done nothing. It turns out the bar owner refused service and had someone take him home without his car keys. Thank goodness someone was thinking.

My mothers best friend lost her life to a drunk driver, her husband and 2 little girls were in that car as well. The drunk got 5 years in prison, I think he only actually spent 2 because I can remember her husband being on T.V pleading that they keep this guy behind bars for his full sentence.
That beind said, my father is one of those idiots that should of lost his license years ago, he is always driving drunk.

Unfortunately nothing changes. Back in 1982 a drunk totaled my car, and got to drive again.

Nothing has changed here in Oklahoma either. Way to often, like almost always they end up driving again.

What REALLY irks me here, in the Houston area, is that a good number of DUI's that cause death/serious injuries (and a lot of those hit& runs that they eventually catch that are DUI's) are illegals who don't have licences or insurance. A recent very tragic case was a young Mom, little boy, new husband plowed into & the passersby tried valiantly to save them from the flaming car. The illegal who killed them had numerous DUI's. And shouldn't have been here in the 1st place.
