I ended up buying some on ebay because I couldn't find them in the stores here in California. And I would bet Amazon would have wool choices.

Check LLBean catalogs. I have had good luck with them.
Would send you some from ND if I knew sizes and could get to town. Also check with your Sears, Penneys, and see if you can order thru them and have them sent to the store. Did you check with Costco? Also it you live close to Big Bear, Lancaster, etc, these places have winter gear also.

Costco has Gold Toe dress socks. I second the LL Bean recommendation for heavy socks. JC Penney's has the best men's department, I think.

dress wool sox I'd try Nordstroms, thick regular wool sox I often get at Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shops od Dick's Sporting. Those stores have good quality wool sox for skiing & hiking. ~ liz

Socks for Men

I absolutely love their advertisements on tv they are so funny. Especially their buck naked underwear, and the ball room jeans lol

DH likes thorlo socks for his hiking, which he does for work, they tweak the construction, weight, depending on what you're going to use them for, where you want added protection and warmth...I won't pay full price for them though...

I've bought from Duluth Trading, nice quality things there too.

"Smartwool" brand socks (different levels of thicknesses/cushy padding -- check its website.) I've purchased them in my size, but they have men's sizes, too of course.

I've purchased them at sporting goods stores (Dick's, for example), and I think REI has them.

I've also purchased a couple pairs from the website GoBros.com (that was my first purchase from them and I had no issues.)

Around this time of year, they usually have "gift" boxes -- a set of 3 or 4 at a discount.

Check stores that cater to farm, home fixits people, and shop hobbists. Places like Fleet Farm if you have those out your way. Sports, camping, hiking, and hunting equipment stores do have such things, however, they tend to be pricey. One of the best stocked would be Cabela's Others that come to mind are Gander Mountain, Duluth, etc. And then there are so-called military surplus stores.

I have not looked recently, but places like Target, Penny's and Sears may have something although I haven't been in those very much in recent years.

I find wool socks there.

Knit them Sheila! Tho you are running out of time. I find a pair takes me 20+ hours depending on how far down I do the ribbing and how much detail I put in them. Once your so. Has worn hand knit socks he won't want to wear any others. But the others have given you good suggestions on where to look in stores.

Not to hijack the thread but Tami, my 14 year old grandson absolutely loves my handmade socks and begs me to make him more. I WISH I could knit him a pair in about 20 hours. I had him stand on a letter size piece of paper to trace his foot and discovered it just wasn't long enough anymore. Had to go to legal size, LOL. He is wearing a size 14 and is still growing!

LOL Donna, I know what you mean! My DS just got married, and in doing so, I inherited 2 bonus grandsons. The 13 year old is wearing size 12 shoes and still growing. For as fast as he grows, it will be awhile before I knit him any!

Try Rei.com, especially for the thick wool socks. Rei is an excellent place for sports stuff, well known for quality and customer service. Also Cabelas.com for both kinds of socks. Cabelas is well known for quality outdoors stuff; they also have sporty type dress clothes.
