Where to buy men's wool dress socks and thick wool socks?

DS just asked for thick wool socks and calf length dress wool socks either thick or thin. I live in southern California, and he is in NYC. Where can I buy them in California?

I ended up buying some on ebay because I couldn't find them in the stores here in California. And I would bet Amazon would have wool choices.

Check LLBean catalogs. I have had good luck with them.
Would send you some from ND if I knew sizes and could get to town. Also check with your Sears, Penneys, and see if you can order thru them and have them sent to the store. Did you check with Costco? Also it you live close to Big Bear, Lancaster, etc, these places have winter gear also.

Robin, you have been given some great advice, especially checking your gauge, which none of us like to do! If a pattern calls for casting on more stitches, but has a pattern to it, especially a cable, try it anyway. Cables take up stitches, or pulls the stitches tighter, similar to ribbing, so it takes more stitches to fit the same. Also, measure your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of your toe. Subtract 2 inches. That is how long you need to knit the foot before you start your decreases for the toes. The decreases will take up about 2 inches. That is how you get the socks to fit your feet in length, no matter what the pattern says. As long as you get it to fit around with the right number cast on, you can make the foot as long or as short as you need to. I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult Sock pattern. It has multiple cast ons for different weights of yarn. I cast on 72 for my fluffy legs and decrease to 68 at the ankle so the foot fits right. For my DH, I cast on 72 and do that to the end with only decreases at the toe. All on size 2 needles. Cables are not hard as long as you mark your rows and pay attention. And the needle thingy you need is called cable needle! I have used a double point needle and a size 1 crochet hook in a pinch! Hmmmm, a tooth pick, too, once! Tami

Just a suggestion: Are you sure you want pure wool? It would not only be expensive but difficult to launder, especially with an item that large. I might go with a synthetic for both of those reasons.

What is your favorite sock yarn?

Heavier sock yarns are OK for boots but may make socks that are too thick for regular shoes and sneakers. Most wool sock yarns are made from superwash wool with nylon for strength and longer wear. There are some sock yarns that are not superwash and will felt if machine washed so I always check the label. If you want to splurge, Mountain Colors Bearfoot is heavenly soft and warm because it has mohair. There are also sock yarns with stretchy elastic built in (Trampoline, Regia Stretch, Lana Grossa Mega Boot, Cascade Fixation) that will make your socks fit better. Paton's Kroy is a good value in a wool sock yarn, comes in tons of colors and is available widely. There are some online sites with great prices on sock yarn (Elann, Knitpicks) and one devoted to sock yarn (Simplysockyarn).

I don't really know. They may be hand knit which could be part of it although the actual knitter was paid very little for the work, I'm sure. 1) there will be people who buy them because they like Ralph Lauren, they like cable knit socks and $200 isn't such a big deal to them. 2)there will be people who buy them because they will tell people "These socks were $325 and I got them for under $200!" 3)there will be people who buy them because they want to tell people they paid $200 for RL socks. They can't afford a $5000 RL suit, so they will settle for status where they can find it. Even Ralph Lauren produces clothes that go directly to the outlets...do you think someone who goes to the Flagship Polo in Manhattan and pays $100 for shirt is wearing the same one as most people buy at the outlet in Reading PA? Not likely, unless it is an odd size or the color was not so popular. 4) There will be people who spend an entire paycheck on stuff like this. A friend of mine worked with a woman who wore pricey everything. When he went to her apartment she had a mattress with a blanket and a TV. Her entire paycheck went for rent, a little bit to eat, and clothes. My other friend in NY treats patients in a clinic where they have to prove a low income to qualify and they will come in with a genuine $1500 Chanel bag (his SO works for Chanel so he knows the real thing).

Costco has Gold Toe dress socks. I second the LL Bean recommendation for heavy socks. JC Penney's has the best men's department, I think.

DH likes thorlo socks for his hiking, which he does for work, they tweak the construction, weight, depending on what you're going to use them for, where you want added protection and warmth...I won't pay full price for them though...

I've bought from Duluth Trading, nice quality things there too.

"Smartwool" brand socks (different levels of thicknesses/cushy padding -- check its website.) I've purchased them in my size, but they have men's sizes, too of course.

I've purchased them at sporting goods stores (Dick's, for example), and I think REI has them.

I've also purchased a couple pairs from the website GoBros.com (that was my first purchase from them and I had no issues.)

Around this time of year, they usually have "gift" boxes -- a set of 3 or 4 at a discount.

Check stores that cater to farm, home fixits people, and shop hobbists. Places like Fleet Farm if you have those out your way. Sports, camping, hiking, and hunting equipment stores do have such things, however, they tend to be pricey. One of the best stocked would be Cabela's Others that come to mind are Gander Mountain, Duluth, etc. And then there are so-called military surplus stores.

I have not looked recently, but places like Target, Penny's and Sears may have something although I haven't been in those very much in recent years.

Knit them Sheila! Tho you are running out of time. I find a pair takes me 20+ hours depending on how far down I do the ribbing and how much detail I put in them. Once your so. Has worn hand knit socks he won't want to wear any others. But the others have given you good suggestions on where to look in stores.

Not to hijack the thread but Tami, my 14 year old grandson absolutely loves my handmade socks and begs me to make him more. I WISH I could knit him a pair in about 20 hours. I had him stand on a letter size piece of paper to trace his foot and discovered it just wasn't long enough anymore. Had to go to legal size, LOL. He is wearing a size 14 and is still growing!

LOL Donna, I know what you mean! My DS just got married, and in doing so, I inherited 2 bonus grandsons. The 13 year old is wearing size 12 shoes and still growing. For as fast as he grows, it will be awhile before I knit him any!

Hope you find the socks you need Sheila.

Try Rei.com, especially for the thick wool socks. Rei is an excellent place for sports stuff, well known for quality and customer service. Also Cabelas.com for both kinds of socks. Cabelas is well known for quality outdoors stuff; they also have sporty type dress clothes.

Last year for Christmas we bought our son in law who does construction outside a lot on the winter, socks at Bass Pro ....they were
$13.00 and have a life time guarantee

They are his favorite.

Denny says he has some too and he likes them.

I think that is correct. I'll check on line and see what I can find.
