Herb and Spices (cooking) where do get yours?

I need to replace most of my spices as they are too old. I thought about San Francisco Herbs, but the quality to too large. I don't need a pound of??/

Pensley's (sp) sounds good, but wonder how long they are going to be around as they seem to be cutting back on somethings.

I pick mine up at Penzeys, I don't understand your comment about them not being around, Marie? I also get some from Watkins.

I grow a lot of my own herbs, but cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, cumin and the rest of the line up, I usually replace yearly from our local Mennonite store... if they have what I need...They are reasonably priced too.... and of course there is WalMart for those I can't find at the Mennonite store..

Funny you should bring this subject up, I just moved mine yesterday from the second shelf of my cabinet to the first shelf. The cabinet is located next to my fridge but yet near the stove. I used to keep them above the stove, then they went to a little drawer between the stove and sink. I like this location where they are now but to keep them organized is very hard. I also do not throw my spices away one year but I do keep an eye on them for any critters. I have been looking for something to get them organized but so far I cannot find anything becasue I have too many. Deb

You've got a lot of really great feedback but after reading through the posts I'm inspired to post as well :-) So, yes, in agreement with those who say close to the stove, I strongly recommend the drawers or cabinet close to the stove. Considering that most spices are added during "cooking" phase and not "prep" or "finishing" phase, it's better to have them close to the stove.

We keep ours in a 12" wide two level pull out cabinet next to the rangetop. The most used bottles (e.g. olive oil) are at the very front so when I need to grab them, I open the door and grab them without pulling out the shelf. The taller bottles are on the bottom shelf so we don't have to bend much to reach them. The lower sides of a pull out make it easy to see enough of the bottle and label to easily identify the bottle I want. With a 24" wide drawer, it probably won't be filled with tall bottles, but will be a mix of short and tall ones. So one will have to bend more to get the short bottles. Also, it may be harder to tell which bottle is which in a deep drawer - that of course depends on how distinctive the bottles are when viewed from above and if you remember which is which. There are also pullouts available where the shelves attach to a door and pull out with them, but for us, I feel it is easier to not have to reach under the upper shelf to reach things on the bottom shelf or bend to see the things on the bottom shelf. We have a rangetop. Heat isn't great for oils and other flavoring agents so this may be better for a rangetop or cooktop than next to the oven of a range.

gothaml, yes, that is a little cutting board. We ordered a standard 4-shelf pull out, and then removed a shelf. We could have gotten away with the 3 shelves but weren't sure how it would work. Our cabinet contractor drilled holes with . . . dunno. A giant divot bit? Or maybe he was just good. He covered the surface, I think, in masking tape before cutting. Anyway, we had an extra shelf if he screwed it up. After the crocks were dropped in, I was able to adjust the shelf beneath so that the crocks just barely rest on the shelf below, but each mfg may have a different drilling standard for shelf pins. Ours were Holiday. But this was more for appearance than weight-bearing. I will link the container we dropped in below. As I think on it, the first we got came from Container Store. You can see that they have a little lip to catch on. I would get both sizes and measure. Our pull-outs are in a bumped out stove area so we used the larger but YMMV. I don't really mind crocks on the counter but for us it was a matter of having 4 cats and a lot of cat hair. I always felt I needed to rinse before using, just in case. Paranoia, in part. Guess it is because they cut back on a newsletter but then the time needed to put together news letters are not worth it.

I mostly use what is available at the local grocery store. Is there something I am missing. I did pick up a huge jar of imported cinnamon from Costco...will share with DIL and DD. Costco also just had vanilla beans ($$$) but plan on putting one container in DIL stocking.Even our Food4Less and Winco have those things in their bulk purchase area. Maybe it is a "good thing" that Oregon is so close to California.LOL. (And, TJ's is 200 miles away) Nanny

Definitely Penzey's. I love going into their stores. There are always wonderful recipes available on recipe cards.

You can buy small jars or large packs to refill your old jars. AND they are the nice glass jars like they used to be. None of the cheap plastic ones.

I mostly buy at the local grocery store too. Some things that I use a lot of I get at Sam's Club much cheaper.

Try a web search for Con Yeager Spice Company. The processing plant and store is just 10 miles from me. They do web and telephone orders. Prices are extremely reasonable and everything is processed there, so it is fresh. Great people to deal with. Quanties from minijars to gallons. I love their packaged seasonings for burger. You will also find processing kits for venison and many other helpful things. Nice gift baskets too.

I grow and dry some of my own herbs.

Most of what I buy, I get through Penzey's. Haven't seen any problem with them at all--I either go to one of their stores or order mail order. Can't imagine they wouldn't be around, since they're the country's major spice importer and sell to many other distributor's, retailers, etc.

If I need something immediately, I'll go to the spice market at the Reading Market, or a spice store near my country house.

Never buy from supermarkets or discount stores--their spices aren't generally as fresh, nor as pure as you get from actual spice companies. And, I find, Penzey's is far cheaper than buying grocery store spices.

The best place to buy spices in my area is Olde Town Spice Shoppe. They have really good prices, most items are in the clear plastic tubs if that matters. Shipping seems a little high.. but it's probably still a good deal if you need a lot of spices.

I buy mine in bulk at a local store called Wheatfield's. The grocery store spices cost a fortune.

I have found bins at a nearly health food store......you can buy as much or as little as you wish.
The turnover seems quick so I never worry about freshness.
I do grow a lot of herbs in the garden and since we live in a mild climate, I have them all year around....except basil.

I love buying at the Amish stores, but there are non nearby. This summer I got lucky, there was a Penseys near the hostel in Santa Monica, and I got a nice load. :)

Otherwise, I buy at the grocery store. Gotta go, to what's available.

PS, I do grow herbs, and I dehydrate them as well. Need a new yard along with the house I am looking for, for next years growing season.

I can buy the amount I need at 'Sprouts' I do not use much since I am really not a chef nor a baker and watch what spices I eat some make me ill:(
