I think I'm overwhelmed

There's not that much more to do around here for Christmas, but my feet and ankles hurt, and I just wanna sit! I sent DH out for some peanuts for a recipe, we've got to decorate the front porch a little bit, there's things to wrap, it goes on and on. Sorry, I just wanted to vent a little, I'm sure you're all in the same boat. My Aunt Nellie died too, and we're going to funeral tomorrow. She was my mom's best friend, I'm sure they're together now, laughing and giggling about the old days.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My husband's grandmother died two days before our wedding day. A few people came to the wake with wedding gifts for us. Tacky,but I got to sit down and talk with (future) relatives.

I keep thinking "this time next week ..... it'll almost be over ........."

I hate that I think that way at what is supposed to be a joyous, happy time of year, yet I do. Sigh ........

Hi - (Sigh)-- we are building a house and i'm soooo tired of picking things- my head is spinning. I am working on the kitchen and i think i'm overwhelmed and lost my sense of direction... We are building a "traditional" home-- maple rich wood floors throughout most. Tile in kitchen. The third pic shows the tile (the large tile is the one we are picking for the kitchen/foyer)... Color is SW Blonde (yellow/creamy paint)... I think we picked out kitchen wood cabinet- but i would like your opinions on it. I want it to look timeless, traditional (not country!) and pretty. The guy suggested a distressed black island and i'm not sure about it. Will it time out soon? (I dont want to redo this kitchen any time soon?) The pictures attached are of the cabinet color and the handles we will have (NOT THE GRANITE) our granite is brownish with black specks in it. What do you think ? HONEST ! kiki, thanks for the link--and the compliment! I like the Tahoe and Ashton models...just can't get past the idea of going with something other than black because of the wrought iron scrolls! This is truly a decorating downside of mine because I look at something and think it HAS to match...when in reality I know it's all about complimenting and coordinating. Les...thanks for the response. I "think" the front door will be painted red. I have this vision of these Cracker Barrel rocking chairs on the porch and a matching red front door to give the house a punch of color against all the gray and tan. What a very pretty room! I second all the advice to take your time and to get something temporary for the time being. do you have a rug you are going to use in that room from which you could pull a color for the drapes? My two specific pieces of advice are to ignore the window to the far right that is next to the fireplace. I would maybe do drapes along the long wall, and then blinds on the window next to the fireplace. I wouldn't do the same treatment on both as that would look a little awkward. the other piece of advice is to check out this blogpost. It is (almost) the best bit of design advice wrriteen anywhere about any decorating topic in my opinioin! http://cotedetexas.blogspot.com/2009/08/top-ten-design-elements-4.html She provides oodles of specific examples demonstrating why her advice makes sense. @aklvdb, I think the pulls decision is one that seems to have no right or wrong answers. I read a gazillion threads when I was trying to pick 2 months ago, and ultimately I just found one that I liked from Hickory Hardware and went for it (ordered them all without even a test run.) I used all cup pulls on the drawers and all bar pulls on the doors I'm really happy with the ones I used, but I did run into one unexpected issue that I will share simply so that no one else has this stupid mistake occur. My contractor asked about placement. I told him, verbally, with the guy who was really running the show standing right there. I wanted 2 pulls on all drawers, except for the trash pullout and the drawer above which are only 18" wide. There I wanted only one pull. I left for awhile, came home, found only one pull on all the drawers. Not sure what happened but by then it was too late to do anything about it. The function is fine, maybe even better, and no one else would notice or care. But it was a lesson learned for me: write everything down, with drawings if necessary.

My condolences to your and your family. I too like to think members of my family are up there, together, having a great time.

I'm doing my last cookie baking today - special diet concerns (wheat/gluten allergy) for a friend. Of course there will be serious quality control going on today. Anything doesn't taste right it will be introduced to Mr. Garbage Pail.

I'm sick of shopping - absolutely. Tired from our snowstorm and shoveling but feeling the spirit of xmas big time. Afterall, we have been very blessed this year with DH's new job and I'm now getting the opportunity to stay home to catch up and assist my aging mother. I try to help others when I can in any way possible. This is the time to count our blessings and share with the less fortunate, let go of ill feelings, quarrels, grudges and breathe again. Time to wash all of these trials away from our souls and start the New Year on good terms.

If you're like me and held festering squabbles inside which really do hurt you first, let go with me and look around at the cherished things in your life.

Property Taxes, Home Owners Insurance, Medicare Changes, IRS, Medical Bills, Dogs to the Vet, Dogs to be Groomed, Laundry to do, leaves to rake, house to clean......(Breath)

An Aunt recovering from an accident, Mom is sick, I have a cavity, I also got a bad "sugar" count report,

I could go on......then a bird crapped all over my car...maybe more than one bird...I must have parked under a nest. Birds sing for some people.

Other than that I'm relatively content. LOL!

for myself, I have decided to skip Christmas
i have put up no decorations and only bought 2 gifts
i sent money to the california grandkids
i will buy the local ones something after Christmas

I am very sorry for you loss.

If all that stuff doesn't get done will it really be the end of the world? I don't think so. Is there anyone in you household doing as much as you are? I doubt that too. Cut back. Put your feet up and enjoy the season. It's not worth killing yourself over. Do what you can do comfortably. Delegate. Don't put so much pressure on yourself.

Hi McPeg,

I'm glad that you have a number of things to be thankful for and are feeling better.

And pleased that you've let/are letting some of the bitterness and anger melt/drain/get flushed away.

They cause all kinds of twisting to our psyche, and are corrosive to not only our souls, but sometimes to our bodies, as well.

Life's too short to carry them around in a wash basket for years.

But just trying to smooth them over doesn't work - they just break out again, or cause trouble somewhere else.

How much better to let the negative stuff go, regain happiness and an optimistic outlook on life?

Congratulations on the progress that you've made.

So sorry for your loss. But at least she's in a better place, having fun with your mom.

I feel like I haven't even begun shopping this year, for several reasons:
1) For DH's sibs, we all decided to donate to charitable causes in each other's names. DH did it all! THIS IS ONE GREAT WAY TO HAVE DH DO ALL THE SHOPPING! I think I'll post separately on this one.

2) On his side, we're only buying gifts for MIL and FIL, and 7 year old nephew. Although I have some ideas, not complete on this front yet. Better get going!

3) My side of the family seems to have given up on Xmas entirely. Can't blame my DB too much -- his family is Jewish, but until our Dad died a few years ago, we all did share a big Xmas get-together. I make a family gift donation in their name now, plus a gift card to my teenage neice.

With my sister, her DH is very controlling and doesn't like to travel or go long distances for the holidays (can't say I blame him, but it is selfish nonetheless). No nephews or nieces to buy for on that side. We do a donation for them, with perhaps a little gift or two on the side.
