28 degrees here last night. Yes even in California the weather is unkind at times:) I'm so sick of the weather fluctuations and this long, cold spring we're having I could scream. 29 tonight and then we should be seeing a warming trend after that. I brought the smaller potted roses into the laundry room last night. The others onto the front porch with a frost cover and left my little portable greenhouse out back zipped up tight. Everything seems fine so far. I will probably try to plant some mini's this weekend if for no other reason than I need the space to start seeding vegetables in my wee greenhouse. Kate

As soon as I hear those three dreaded words - "Gulf of Alaska"- on the TV weather report, I know we are in for a seige of misery. It used to be just a short lived period of time, but the recent lows are unusually brutal, because they are continuing on and on, with no breaks. Yes, I was here in 1990 and all the way back into the 50's, but I don't recall it ever being so bad, this early, and for such an extended period of time. Maybe I blot unpleasant things out of my memory that I hate, and I HATE snow and freezin temps! Predictions for tonight, are that temps will not go as low, but then will drop again tomorrow, (Friday) and will stay well below freezing over the weekend. One of the reporters said that is a chance of a tropical rain storm coming in around Christmas, that will warm things up and drop a significant amount of moisture! I hope the predictions are right on that one!

I am did what I can to protect my red buckeye the other day and now again this afternoon. I can't believe the extremes I have gone to to protect the developing flower buds on this tree but I saw what the freeze did to the trees that were in flower around here and since this is the very first time my buckeye has developed flowers buds, I was determined to do whatever it takes not to lose them. I placed an old cheapo arbor over the tree and covered that with row cover and then with a plastic cover. I see now that we are probably going to get snow too if not tonight, Friday and Saturday.
