Unsubscribing to junk emails

Over the years, I've ended up on alot of email mailing lists. Some I've signed up for, some not. I'm tired of opening my email in the morning to find 15+ advertisement emails from various companies. I've started creating filters for them so that when they come to me, they automatically delete. In addition, I'm unsubscribing to them. I've done the unsubscribe thing in the past, but I'm wondering if it really works. It seems that some I've unsubscribed for just keep coming through.

Does this feature really work? I've heard that it can make it worse and you'll just end up getting even more junk.

And these emails aren't even in addition to the ones I get on a seperate Yahoo address I have. I get hundreds of spam email a day on that email.

I've noticed a lot of junk e-mails this past week that I've never gotten before. Hopefully it's just because it Christmas time and they're trying to drum up business. I just delete them all.

Steph, can you mark "spam" in your mail program?

I only subscribe to stuff using one particular email addy. Works as a GREAT filter. :)

It's yahoo, and I can mark other stuff I get there that I don't want, nor subscribed to as spam.

I find the filter option to work best, to get rid of unwanted mail in my other email programs.

That particular email account is the account that I direct email to when I order things. I also have one for websites that require a "signup" - like Gardenweb, etc, and another for my personal correspondence. I was just trying to clear a bit of the log-jam out of this particular one. Northridge Publishing looks like a legit business, judging from their website, with salt of the earth people in Utah. ....yea...not so much on that one. They are a legitimate company, but many have fallen prey to their deceptive practices. In particular - re-subscription to magazines that they have requested many times to not get. Once they get your CC number - you are at their mercy.... I have never ordered from them - and I want to keep far away from their business. I fully believe that my address was supplied to them by Provo Craft, another "reputable business" that is starting to do things that are not so special to their customers. He must be really mad--I've seen three threads from you about this already! Just don't sign on. If he's worried about his email address somehow being compromised, I believe you can go into the account settings and change it to a dummy address. (Or, if it requires a response to a confirmation email, just change it to your own email address.)

You may not see what I see Annz, lol. If you have enabled this feature in your preferences, there is a small check box under the posting box which reads: Check here if you would like post replies emailed to you. Please note that you must enable this feature on your Preferences page by checking off 'Allow other users to send you email'. If you have the feature enabled and you check the box that is offered to you, every post to that thread will go to your email box. That is what I mean by "subscribing" to a thread. The problem is that once you sub to a thread, the "preview post" button moves down and in it's usual place you get a highlighted button that says "click here" followed by: if you no longer wish to receive notifications for this message. After writing a post I hit the first highlighted button under the post box by rote. Sometimes, that first button gives me a preview of my post (if I am not subbed to that thread), other times (if I am subbed to the thread) the first button merely unsubs me and takes me back to the general forum. Then, if I am lucky enough to realize I did not post my message, I have to go back, recover the post, and submit it. The problem is simply that having a key button (the preview post button) move around, causes me to frequently do something I did not intend to do. Maybe it's just me and my half-heimers but I've never had a moving button on any other forum and it's driving me nuts!

If they are ones that you signed up, for I suspect that you could write to them and ask to be removed. I've done this in the past and it has been sucessful. If they are the SPAM style ones that just appear out of nowhere they won't respond and it will probably increase the amount you get.

Steph, unsubscribing used to work but not anymore. By unsubscribing it lets them know that you are a legitmate email address and they will continue to send you stuff, and often sell your email address to other lists.

Some junk you can unsubscribe from. Those that are from more "reputable" places, that you probably signed up for. You may have inadvertantly signed up by not unchecking "send me newsletter" type of boxes.

By unsubscribing from some of the more unsavory type of junk mail (the viagra type nasty stuff or money scam ones) you are proving that you are indeed a live address and you will get MORE junk mail.

Sometimes instead of asking to unsubscribe, I block them. Also Earthlink has some anonymous email addresses I use, that really stopped alot, which surprised me.

what has happened to all the G's?

I don't really get spam; I get junk mail--mailings from companies I've done business with. So I go on an "unsubscribing" binge every now and then.

It mostly works. It's certainly worth doing.

But if I don't recognize the company, I just delete it.

must have been something wrong w/ my browser program; I couldn't read any G's, or any dashes or apostrophes.

It went away once I quit the program and came back in. It was sort of fun while it lasted.

Made me think of the book "Ella Minnow Pea."

Stephanie I think that sometimes it can take several days after unsubscribing for it to become effective.
