'Jaw-dropping images of a supercell cloud'

My DS sent me this link this morning. A Montana electrician, whose hobby is photographing storms, took these pictures of "The Mothership"--a thunderstorm cloud known as a supercell. His photos are up for an award from National Geographic.

Boy, I think if I saw that in real life, I would be afraid it was the end of the world!!! What amazing pictures! I hope I only ever see that as a picture! Scary stuff! Just amazing. Thanks for sharing that.

Shucks, I accidentally hit submit . .................................................... Are you quite certain that the gas you are now discovering, was not already in the oil from before you undertook this rebuild? What may be damaged depends on how long the engine "ran" with contaminated and diluted oil. If the engine had been running with gas in the oil before the fuel pump work, I would expect the exhaust would have had a definite blue or blue-white color "smoke" in it. In which case, the most likely components to suffer damage would be the crankshaft rod journal and connecting rod, the piston and cylinder walls might have sustained some "scoring" or galling, but usually, the piston and cylinder of a 4 stroke engine, are "spared" in cases of gasoline contaminated oil in the crankcase. It usually requires that these engines be "run without any oil" before the piston and cylinder walls see damage (of course by that time, the crank and rod is usually "trashed" as well). Consider a 2 stroke engine escapes damage to the piston and cylinder with as little as 1 part oil to 50 parts gasoline. Also consider the the same amount of oil is sufficient to lube the crank main and rod journals in a 2 stroke engine, but ONLY DUE TO the 2 stroke design using ball or roller bearings in those 2 places. Plain bearings in the typical 4 stroke OPE engine will NOT survive long if run with diluted oil. If all the time this engine has actually run with gas in the oil, amounts to a mere 20 to 30 seconds, I believe all you have "suffered" is a solvent washing of the interior surfaces of the engine. Post engine numbers and let's see if we can find some illustrations of that carb. Maybe then we can retrace your steps during reassembly of the pump.

For me, the cost is similar. I've spent the past 6 months looking at granites, and have brought many samples home - polished, honed, and leathered. There are beautiful stones out there, and beautiful kitchens on this blog. However, a light bulb went off for me - I'm having so much trouble picking a granite because it is just not right for me, in our house, right now. Just today we picked out our slab of a mother of pearl quartzite for the perimeter, and a piece of soapstone for a buffet/pantry piece. And I am excited. Whenever I tried to decide on a specific granite, none ever felt quite right. Folks are right when they say you will know it when you see it! Bring enough samples home and live with them a little - who said the phrase I love, "go with what makes your heart sing."

Has this discussion meant anything Frieda in whatever sense - especially if you've enjoyed it?Oh absolutely, Jan! I'm drawn to poetry discussions...well, I must be because I'm always sticking my fat head in and exposing my ignorance. Truth is I love the idea of poetry, but I am less enchanted with most poems, themselves. But occasionally I discover a new one that smacks me up the side of my head -- such as "Cold Knap Lake" at Anyanka's link above -- and it's all worth it. I may even develop a liking for Mary Oliver. :-) Now, the Keats: I seem to relate better to pre-20th century poets. I'm not sure if it's the quaint language (in the sense of being marked by beauty and elegance) or the imagery that I like best. Some 20th-century poets (don't know yet about the 21st-century ones) can pull off the feat and send me into "the light of other times" that I like best. Here's one that does just that: Her Kind I have gone out, a possessed witch, haunting the black air, braver at night; dreaming evil, I have done my hitch over the plain houses, light by light: lonely thing, twelve-fingered, out of mind. A woman like that is not a woman, quite. I have been her kind. I have found the warm caves in the woods, filled them with skillets, carvings, shelves, closets, silks, innumerable goods; fixed the suppers for the worms and the elves: whining, rearranging the disaligned. At the nurseries, later on in the season, sedums can look really scraggly and unattractive and give little clue as to their true garden performance, likely due to receiving the same fertilizer regiment as other perennials. I have seen 'Red Cauli' and others that were flopping and falling all over themselves and sure to be bypassed by any shopper. 'Red Cauli' is a beauty both in foliage and flower, but this one in particular neeeds to be given a lean diet and little water to show at its very finest. Annette, I had just been looking at 'Sunsparkler Firecracker' and it sure is quite the beauty! 'Pinky' had also caught my eye. Nice to see breeders now giving sedums a fair bit more attention.

cool pic! you sometimes see those here in orlando during the summer when it's our rain season. it rains everyday between 3-7pm depending on which wind (east or west) is stronger. everyday the east & west seabreezes collide along the I-4 corridor causing often intense lightening (10,000 cloud 2 ground strikes an hr) and rain. the leading edges of hurricanes also have that look ~ liz

unfortunately I have seen many of those having lived in Oklahoma and Texas for many years. The worst ones I have seen were similar to those and were in the Oklahoma City area, the one that hit Moore, OK and did such devastation with it's tornadoes looked a lot like those pics. You really want to be underground somewhere safe when one of those is over you.

Scary! It is my understanding though that he took many pictures then put parts of them together to make one picture so are we seeing what the storm would really look like or not?

The photos were wonderful. I read the comments at the bottom and there was some controversy as to whether they were enhanced. I don't know that much about the technical wonders of Photo Shop but you'd think if they were being considered for an award by National Geographic then even if they were improved upon then it must not bother the magazine.

I'd love to have some of those matted and framed. They are just outstanding.

a pal recently took photos of a storm coming in over the lake from the michigan town she lives in..they were awesome and not enhanced...she was lucky..had the weather ch dude to back up what she photographed, lol...

Hi toby girl,

I wouldn't mind seeing it, either ... but if I were seeing the real, jaw-dropping thing ...

... I'd want to have a strong, reinforced hole in the ground into which I could drop quickly in case some stuff developed that was not to my liking and started getting too close and personal!
