All the talk about rice cookers got me thinking again about how much I have been wanting a pressure cooker.

I have had my eye on this one for quite awhile so I decided to get it.

Salgal, that looks great! Wonderful reviews and all stainless steel inside. I wasn't looking for a multi-function pressure cooker, but I might have been tempted if I hadn't already ordered a Oyama rice cooker.

My parents used a pressure cooker (the old-fashioned kind, on top of the stove) a lot. I've heard the new ones are great. Have fun with yours!

that is my younger daughters newest toy. Saw it, when I was there at Thanksgiving. She loves it, but I honestly don't know what all she has cooked in it.

TRUST THE NAME (holy moly, am I related to ken_r - not ashamed to be, teehee) Your are in zone 5. Here just across the border in zone 4, we've been trying to get the potential of this beauty for 14 years. Like 'Choko Nishiki' (sp?), aka, 'On Stage' (although recent readings question if they are really the same plant, something I hope to remember to ask Mr. Expert 'What's in a Name', Mr. Warren Pollock about someday). But I digress. Bottom line from our perspective, at least here in zone 4, this cultivar will be 'punky' unless you can put it in ALL DAY SUN and water it enough. We have a friend just south across the border into zone 5. She has this wonderful plant out in all day sun, and had the ability and does, indeed, give it all the water it needs (that alone is a real challenge). I wish I had a handy picture - it's a real show-stopper! Just off hand, I think her plant of this is spittin' on even the late Brian Skaggs originators stock of Xanadu 'Empress Wu'. I'm sure most of you understand what a drastic statement that is, so I'm really stepping out on a thin, long limb saying that. Nevertheless, seeing is believing. Now if only I can find a picture of this truly mature Hosta 'Sun Power'. I promise to remember to post it when I find it (the pic) Again, remember, folk name Hosta, mostly, for good reasons. Hence, H. 'Sun Power', gives POWER in SUN. As I'm so fond of commenting on, Hostas, mostly, are faster, better, meaner, bigger, in 'more sun' Those in 'bigger' zone numbers keep reminding me that they have to 'chill out' with regards to this, so always remember to consider the source of 'rash' comments about this Genus, huh? Some day, when I git a little older and retire to somewhere a little, or a lot, further south, I hope to explore Hosta growing in way bigger zone numbers. Like ken_r, I don't want to go to z9 or higher where I have to relearn and grow 'tropicals'. Heaven forbid, don't have enough active brain cells to go that far. Besides, I'm most comfy in the 55-65 degree F temp range. Now for a (please start a new thread) question: Just how far south can one grow and keep Genus Hosta? We gave some to a relative by Bradenton FL, but after a few years they faded away. No 'rest period'. We use a microwave rice cooker that BF's father (full-blood-cajun-I-can't-understand-a-word-he-says-so-I-just-smile-and-nod-and-have-been-caught-doing-it) sent us. It works perfect for white rice every time. His parents make seafood gumbo, jambalya, and catfish courtboullion that make you scream! Anyway, it's a multiuse gadget too. You can serve in it, store in it in the fridge, reheat in it, etc. When we reheat, we sometimes add stuff like gravy, meat, corn, seasonings, or whatever. I'm going to try to make rice pudding with leftovers in it someday soon. I found another brand new Pampered Chef micro rice cooker at the thrift for 2 bucks! Now we're set, the thing looks like it will last for three generations! BF is teaching me to stay in the kitchen when I cook. I too, have a difficult time with things like garlic bread, toasting nuts, etc. I've begun using the timer for even one minute at a time!! It's easy to get distracted, isn't it? What did you end up doing about your rice situation?

Based on the Amazon reviews that I just read, I would not buy that rice cooker. There are too many similar complaints of boiling over resulting in a mess on the counter and burning the bottom of the rice. In the past 35 or so years I have owned two Panasonic rice cookers, both the simple cook and keep warm types. The older one was a five cup and the newer a ten cup that will hold the rice for several days on the keep warm setting. The older one is still going strong at my son's house and I have used the newer one for about ten years now. I live at 5000+ feet in a dry climate and had to learn some minimal tweaks to the amount of water used to compensate for the fact that rice is dryer here and cooking anything takes longer at this altitude. Once that was figured out it's simple to measure the rice and the water, push the switch and walk away to come back to perfect rice every time. Once I had the cooker boil over, when I was cooking a combination of steel cut oats and brown rice for part of our dogs food. That was user error - while you can cook steel cut oats successfully, I just had too large a quantity. You should not need to add butter or oil to keep the rice cooker from boiling over. If you measure accurately, that just shouldn't happen. I have had rice that I've cooked with chicken stock and spices (mostly curry powder) brown on the bottom, but not burn. BTW, I am waiting for mine to die so I can replace it with a ZO, fuzzy logic, pressure rice cooker, but it just keeps on trucking. We use a lot of rice, all kinds, so I could justify that investment. I thought it was interesting that on one thread on CHOW.com, several users felt that cookers made in Japan are superior to those made in other countries - I have no opinion there, just found it interesting. The Panasonics are made in Japan and mine have certainly been trouble free. Cuisinart makes lots of great products, but I don't think this is one of them. Lee

FOAS, the last batch of my char siu bao I used a recipe from a book "Dim Sum, The Art of Chinese Tea Lunch" by Ellen Leong Blonder. When I first saw the book I was not impressed with the cover and presentation. It has that kind of humble appearance that doesn't attract one's attention immediately. After reading the book and trying out a couple of recipes, I became very impressed. As always, I modified her recipes for my own convenience. This is what I did for a bao dough: Make a sponge: 2 tsp active dry yeast 1 C lukewarm water 1/2 C sugar 1-1/2 C cake flour (I used part unbleached** and part cornstarch to make 1-1/2 C of flour mix) The recipe suggested proofing the yeast in warm water for 10 minutes prior to making the sponge, but I skipped this part. I knew my yeast was good so no need to do that. I simply added everything together, stir to smooth, let sit in a warm, draft-free place for an hour. To make the dough: 1/2 tsp salt 1 T rice vinegar (I used white vinegar) 2 C cake flour (once again, I used unbleached**/cornstarch mix), plus about 1/4 C for dusting the board 1 T baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda (I skipped this) 1 TBSP vegetable shortening (Traditional Chinese buns used lard; I had some so I used it) ** If you don't want yellow-ish buns, you may want to use AP flour instead of unbleached. Even AP flour won't give you that bright white Chinese buns we see in restaurants, but AP flour definitely will produce whiter color than unbleached. For very white buns, you will need to use special flour i.e. Hong Kong flour, for the best results.** Stir the salt and vinegar into the sponge starter. In another bowl, sift together the 2 C cake flour (or the flour mix), baking powder, and baking soda (none for me). Stir the flour mixture into the yeast mixture. When combined, add the shortening (lard) and work it in with your fingers. The dough will become a sticky, somewhat shaggy mass. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured board and knead it for about 15 minutes, or until smooth, adding flour as necessary. Grease a clean, large bowl with a little shortening, place the dough in the bowl, and cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour. (If you have made a bao filling ahead and refrigerated it, take it out now to let it come back to room temperature.) Lightly punch the dough down, and then proceed to shape the dough for wrapping. This recipe will yield 18 large or 24 medium buns, depends on the size you want. Placed wrapped buns on wax paper (2-3 inch squares), at least 1" apart, in steamer (I used bamboo) and let rise for 30 minutes. Bring the water in the steamer to a boil over high heat. Steam a single tier of buns at a time (I used two tiers together), over high heat for 12 (15 for me) minutes. Repeat 2 or 3 batches, if you steam one tier at a time, until all buns are steamed. Serve hot. I've built a unbleached flour sourdough starter last week and this morning it looked ready. I am playing with it now to see if I can make sourdough char siu bao with unbleached/rice flour. So far the dough looks very soupy. I am not going to add more flour until the dough has risen to double. If in four hours the dough is still spongy I will add more flour into it. Since this is sourdough, it will take 7-8 hours to get the dough ready. Probably won't know the outcomes until tonight. Even if this doesn't work out, I will learn something from the experiment and have fun with it. Keep smiling! Cheers! Al

alisande, I wish I had thought to share this with you....I really should have!
I had it in in my head it was a pressure cooker, not really thinking so about it as a rice cooker unitl I went back to see about buying it.

I hope this works out like I am hoping for!

Moni, I am glad to hear someone I "know" owns one...I would love to knwo what she has made in it.

Anybody have good recipes? I have a week off coming up!

That is very much like the Aroma Cooker I have which is labeled as a rice cooker which is misleading because it is also a multi function cooker. I absolutely love it. I can make a whole meal in it in just minutes and I love coming up with new recipes for it.
I definitely recommend these cookers especially the ones with the saute and simmer function. It does it all from browning the meat and onions etc to cooking the meal everything in one pot so easy clean up.

I am absolutely mystified - why is it necessary to have a rice cooker? I have been cooking rice for most of my life and have done so in an ordinary sauce pan. What have I been missing? I do understand using a pressure cooker.

Kris, when my family was growing up I cooked rice all the time too--brown, white, you name it. Never gave it a second thought. But I think a lot of people today--especially working moms--appreciate the convenience of dumping rice and water into a receptacle, pushing a button, and attending to other things while it cooks and then keeps warm if necessary.

Compare it to the popularity of bread makers, which I think is similar. I don't use either, but both sound intriguing, at least to me. Back in the day when I made three meals a day, every day, from scratch, I would have loved a bread maker. ;-)

The appeal of a rice cooker is set it, forget it, and it can stay warm and perfect consistency for hours. If you're making other time consuming or complicated items for a meal, it's nice to not have to attend to the rice at all. Plus it's one less thing you have to worry about timing right with the rest of the meal.

I'm not a fan of specialized kitchen appliances or gadgets and when DH wanted one of these when he came back from living in Japan I thought it was nuts. He insisted on getting it (and they were very expensive back then) and now I love the thing.

I think a lot of brands are made by the same manufacturer because that looks and sounds like mine. I've had it many years...bought at QVC and think it was their brand, whatever that is.... I love it and would never go back to a non-electronic pressure cooker. Mine has been a workhorse!!

I bought the Fagor version of your appliance two years ago October - at that time Amazon had the Fagor and a Nesco, I went with the Fagor because of the dimensions. I was still in my smaller kitchen then and wanted to be able to store it on a standard 12" cabinet shelf and close the door, the Nesco exceeded that by about 1/2".

Absolutely love it and I use it all the time. I brown and slo cook, or brown and pressure cook a few times a month. I've had pressure cookers for years but have used them mostly for canning and rarely cooked in them - the electric appliance makes it so fast and easy, I'd hate to be without it. Just Tuesday we had beef chuck pot roast, from refrigerator raw to ready to serve in about 38 minutes including the browning.

If anything ever happened to it, I'd replace it in a heartbeat; I've enjoyed it more than any other single kitchen appliance I have....hope you like yours as much.
