I am going to tell you a secret. I quit more than 35 years ago, but I still love the smell of tobacco, cigars, and fresh smoke. I loved everything about smoking, including the ritual. BUT I QUIT! And though I would love to smoke again, I know how stupid it is to do it. Don't get tempted at this point.

I began to smoke about 16 ... kept it up for about 6 mos., decided that, liking neither the taste nor, being frugal, even way back then, the cost - I quit.
My Dad had bronchitis and was sure that he was on the way to asthma, so, though pulling up stakes and moving is somewhat more difficult for a farmer than for many in society, moved from rather damp Ontario to rather arid Saskatchewan. He had 40 years of good health, there.
Nephew has such breathing problems that his family moved from Ontario to rather dry Alberta, as well, so we conclude that here is lung weakness in our family. I, too, feel that my lungs are less strong than most of the rest of my body.
At past 80, living once more in Ontario, I had clots in my lung something over a year ago, was told by visiting nurse that I am a very lucky man. If one gets such in the heart, it's a heart attack, and in the brain it's a stroke.
Having been treated with rat poison for substantially over a year, now, I was told a few months ago, after a second CT scan, that my clots are gone and that I'm a poster boy (second childhood) for clot treatment.
My feeling is that, had I continued smoking, more than likely I'd be either in a box underground by now ... or wouldn't that burn one up?

Hi Thank you all--what stories some of you have. I am 60 and started at 17--get this-my friend's teacher told the class to have a cigarette for homework and do a report on it. Well, her and I went half on a pack-there it started. You all have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
When my son was home for Thanksgiving he told me was going to give up smoking on his 60th. birthday. That was November 29th.
He told me during the first week he hadn't had a cigarette for 5 days. I want to encourage him to keep on, but I don't want to bug him about it, so I haven't asked since then. Should I? How did you feel about that?

Sue what a thoughtful, sensitive mom you are, not wanting to nag but wanting to be "cheerleader" for your dear son. I know how happy you are to hear that he is going to quit. I hope you get some good suggestions here.

Hi all, haven't been here for a bit. I would ask your son, Sue-it would show you care about him. It seems men have an easier time of quitting. If people want to quit, it makes it easier also. I find some are hesitant to ask me, and I just say, oh, no smoking going on here! I will get back here much sooner. Thank you all again for encouraging words and well wishes. Merru Christmas to all!
