Had a bit of a scare

The kids wanted Chicken fried steaks for Sunday dinner today so around 3:30 DD carved the steaks off of a big round roast that we had gotten on sale a couple of weeks ago.Her boyfriend pounded them to a pulp and she seasoned them and put them in the refrigerator.About 5 I got everything out,set up my "breading" station and got busy cooking steaks.I had potatoes boiling for mashed taters on the left back burner,a skillet on the big left front burner and another skillet on the right back burner and a Pyrex casserole dish on the right front burner for the cooked steaks,which I planned to put in the warm oven to keep them warm while I fried the rest.I had decided earlier not to use the skillet on the back right burner then after starting the steaks decided to go ahead and have 2 pans of steaks going at the same time.I turned on the right rear burner(or so I thought) then turned it up a little higher because the oil wasn't getting hot fast enough.I was sitting on my handicap scooter directly in front of the stove taking steak out of the skillet on the left when all of a sudden there was a huge explosion and glass was flying everywhere.DD was standing at the sink about 2 feet behind me and she screamed,"Oh my god!" then we realized what had happened.I had turned the burner on under the Pyrex casserole sitting on the right front burner by mistake and it got hot and exploded! Glass flew everywhere,all over the kitchen,in all of the food.There were big shards and tiny shards everywhere.I just sat there dumbfounded for a few seconds because it hadn't soaked in what had happened. Nobody was hurt,and thank God the babies were not in the kitchen at the time.A few more minutes and they would have been because DD was fixing their plates for them to come to the table and eat.I had a lot of tiny little pieces of glass on the front of my shirt and DD had some in her hair but that's about it.It could have been a lot worse I guess.This happened about 6 PM and I thought I was OK but started feeling really nauseous and had a headache afterwards.I guess it scared me more than I realized.I'm OK now.LOL

I hate the stove here anyway.It is electric and the knobs have dots on them showing which is the front burner and which is the back and I always get them confused.Plus they are on the back which makes them hard for me to reach anyway.I told everyone that I was no longer cooking anything on that stove!LOL I do know for sure that I will be more careful and make sure which burner is on and will never sit anything on a burner that I think is not on!!! Lesson learned.

Lilliepad, I'm SO glad that nobody was hurt! The potential was certainly there. So, did that get you out of the kitchen and into a restaurant? Really, what a relief that everyone was unhurt.

So glad no one was hurt! Those dots for front and back burners are confusing. I have turned the wrong one on more then once!

Hey Cindee, I am so behind on this Forum that I can't even catch my breath to read up everything and reply sometimes when the urge comes. We can exchange tomato seed lists. I compiled a quite extensive collection by now, and new ones are always welcomed. Why do I have to go OCD on everything? I bought so much seeds that I could plant a whole acre full of tomatoes and still have leftovers... I can't help it. The success of the beginning just made me dizzy, and when I tasted Better Boy, I wanted to grow more, then when the first Green Zebra ripened, I floored eating my caprese... Not to mention all the little ones that we gobbled up with breakfast: Sun Gold, Yellow Pear, etc. Then there are the weirdoes, like Spreckled Roman... Now, there is no return. I am laying gopher cages for next year, and overdo tomatoes again, even though I am running out of space for amaryllis as well. I don't know why I decided to collect amaryllis bulbs, but I know why I started to grow tomatoes by the dozen: to eat them up! Oh, and your Vanilla Orchid started to grow just NOW. It was sitting in the pot exactly as I planted it, grean, uninterested in doing anything for a year, and now, it is growing a new branch. At the same time, your phylodendron went crazy, and now covers everything around it with its leaves. I'm glad that I could keep some of your gifts alive. Thank you. So let me know if you think you could use a few tomato seeds of varieties you might not have yet.

I remove the bands for several reasons. One is that they tend to rust and stick on and I can't get them off later. The real reason, though, is that if you leave the rings on but lose a seal, that ring could hold the lid on and you wouldn't recognize an unsealed jar. My notes say I took this from a "Ball Canning" website, I think it was on the FAQ section: Q: [What about storing rings on the jars after you are done processing] A: We recommend storing your jars with the bands off. (1) If there is moisture in your band, they can start to rust and it becomes very difficult to get those off. (2) Another reason is that you have food that maybe has gotten under that band, around the neck, you get get some mould, grossness growing on it, and maybe you happened to underprocess your recipe, maybe you got busy with something else and distracted in the kitchen and you think you are done processing and you take it out and let it cool and then a few weeks later it starts to spoil, then you won’t really know that right away if you have your band on your jar. If you store your jars without the band and you happen to have spoilage, the bacteria and the microorganisms that are eating all that smorgasboard of deliciousness in your jar, they are going to create a lot of gasses and they are going to cause that lid to actually come unsealed. You’re going to smell that, especially with the bands off, you’re gonna know that something is not quite right which will obviously get you into your pantry or root cellar to figure out which jar it is and dispose of it properly. Another great thing about not storing with the band is again if there’s moisture you don’t need to worry about it being rusted and being that much more difficult to get off, and the third reason, which is one of my favourites, is that you have your band available for your next canning adventure … so it’s really a matter of personal preference, we just recommend without. [4] Advice given in their HarvestPro Sauce Maker book (2016) would seem to indicate that some people at Ball at least are moving more firmly to the canning rings being removed. “Jars should be stored without the bands.” [5] Happy Canning! I won't comment about the fibroids and enlargement of your uterus, but I've been an ENT nurse for 22 years and I urge you to seek a 2nd opinion prior to having surgery on your sinuses. Have you had a CT of the sinus yet? or at least a limited CT or a sinus series? There is no way (no matter what any doctor may tell you) to tell if it is your sinuses without one of these studies. The CT is the best. There are many ENT specialists who jump the gun, performing sinus surgery that isn't needed. It's fast and easy money for them, and many of them take advantage of their patient's "ignorance" of his/her sinuses. I do not mean ignorance in any sort of demeaning way, but we are all ignorant at some point about certain areas until we are educated about them. So, ask questions, get studies, and don't let someone start "reaming" out your sinuses at the drop of a hat. We have a friend who had sinus surgery with a clear sinus x-ray (he found out later) and he was left with meningitis after the surgeon knicked his brain case and he developed a cerebral spinal fluid leak. He is now deaf in his right ear and suffered from vertigo for 7 years until another ENT surgeon finally had to cut his nerve of hearing to control it (and this, I might add, doesn't always work). He suffered with this for 7 years because the 2nd surgeon waited until the statute of limitations was up for a law suit from the first surgery. They do stick together most of the time. Andierut

Lillie, how about getting someone to mark the either the front, or the rear burner knob with a sharpie pen?

I had problems in my last house with the electric cooktop too.

I finally marked the rear burners red, and the left front blue.

Turned the wrong burner on to often before my color coding.

Meanwhile I am very glad no one was hurt.

lillie, so glad that no one was hurt. Can't remember which program I was watching last week, they were showing the glass dishes and how dangerous it would be on a hot burner, also, they were saying that putting the hot dish from the oven on a wet or cold surface could cause it to explode.

Glad you're okay. Something similar happened to me about a year after I moved into this house. I was making pancakes for breakfast and put a plate on a burner to keep the pancakes on until they were all done. I didn't realize I had turned the heat on low on that burner. I had Corelle plates and boy do those things blow! The plate was so hot, it melted into my linoleum. I no longer put anything on my stove unless it's got food in it and it needs to be heated.

Glad nobody got hurt. I once had a fire with my gas oven. There are heat vents at the back/top of the oven. I had stupidly laid a cloth potholder over the vent and it caught fire. Luckily I was right there and tossed it in a dishpan full of soapy water.

Oh, no. All that preparation and work, and then to have a big, scary explosion mess it all up. I would be having heart palpitations, for sure.

You are not alone...and I am so glad no one was injured. Just two evenings ago, I turned on the wrong burner...not the first time...and DH saw it blazing red before I did. I need to color code those little dots, so thanks for that tip. I just read in the "Consumers Report" a long article about Pyrex and Corning ware; how they are made differently now days from years ago and how uncertain anyone is about their safety, new or old. I know that I have had the Corelle dishes break in our motor home (falling out of cabinets, so we now keep them in a drawer)...what a serious mess as we found slivers under our slide-out for a long time. How scary!! I love my gas range, but it's possible to turn on the wrong burner with gas, too. I know, because I've done it. Fortunately, I figured it out in time. Now I try to make sure I'm looking at the burner when it lights. Not so easy to do that with electric, I know.

I had that happen with a pyrex plate - didn't realize the burner was on.

It is such a sudden bang - I bet you WERE scared out of your wits!

Mine burnt my lino floor. It left brown marks. I tried to pick up the bigger pieces (not many big ones -all slivers!) and burnt my fingers. HOT HOT HOT>

So glad no one was hurt.

I can see why you were scared... I woulda peed my britches for sure... but I am glad that nobody got hurt.. Glass flying around could have been a lot more serious especially super heated glass...

I once had a scare when my dad tossed down a rag that had some kerosene on it.. onto my gas stove.. it was off, but still hot hot hot from my boiling some taters... adn poof, it exploded into flames... Daddy grabbed it and tossed it into the sink, but it caught mom's curtains on fire and those got jerked down into the sink as well... Talk about heart palpitations..

We all have had some scares in our days I reckon.. but again.. sure glad nobody was hurt..

That is scary and how lucky you weren't hurt. It's happened to me too... I took my dish out of the oven and set it on a hot burner by accident and it exploded. No one was hurt in that incident either, I was really glad that my DD (4 years old at the time) was in another room.

I didn't get to go to a restaurant to eat but I DIDN'T go back in the kitchen for a long time! LOL I had only fried 3 steaks and was taking them out when it happened.The pan waiting to be fried was sitting on the counter a couple of feet away from the stove.The steaks were stacked and DD was able to save all but the 2 on top and the ones I had already cooked.Just as a precaution she washed all of the others off real good.
Moni-I have thought about marking them but figured with all the grease it probably wouldn't stay on.I will try that though.
I have had accidents before with grease burning and pot holders catching on fire but nothing ever scared me that bad before.One time I put a Pyrex dish straight from the refrigerator into the oven and it broke but not like this.
We have tile floors.Guess that's the only thing that saved the floor because the glass was still hot several minutes later.I don't even want to think about what "could" have happened,especially if one of the babies had been in here!

Oh lilliepad! Thank the Lord no one was hurt! Take the knob from the back burners and mark them, use a bright nail lacquer, so that you instantly know those are the back burners. That is very frightening!

Instead of using markets could you use something like the different colors of electric tape? Markers may not stay. then use marker on them like left front right front etc.
I too have turned on my electric top wrong and wonder why my food is not cooking. But could you adjust the stove so you can see the top better if that is a problem, or??
