Does your church have a Blue Christmas Service?

Some churches around here, mindful that a number of people, having some serious troubles in their lives, find it quite difficult to join in the general excitement and merriment of the Christmas season, have begun a few years ago holding a Blue Christmas service where such issues are considered.

A suburban church that I attend had a Blue Christmas service on Sunday afternoon, with a couple of dozen people sitting in a circle at the front of the sanctuary. One feature was that each received a card and pencil and were invited to write, possibly illustrate, a person or issue which was of concern to them, then placed each into a slot on a small Christmas tree on a table in the centre. The leader lighted four candles, dealng with loss of loved ones, jobs, health, etc., then of Christmas and our feelings, including negative ones, recently as it approaches, and the gift of faith and hope that Christmas brings.

There are many who have lost a loved one in recent times or been diagnosed with serious, possibly fatal, illness, whether on their own part, or related to a loved one. Others have suffered a major dislocation, such as separation or divorce, alienation of offspring, etc.

In recent years there have been added the worry about uncetainty in, or loss of employment, or being forced to sell one's home or have it foreclosed on, suffer bankruptcy or serious financial losses ... and various of other uncertainties and fears.

Some churches have felt that such issues needed to be recognized and people who were dealing with them have the opportunity to have those specific fears and pains dealt with in their spiritual home, at this time - that there is a message in Christmas relating to their need, as well.

We passed the Peace at the end of the service.

I think that several found it meaningful.

May you find a blessing filling your heart, meeting your special need, whatever that may be, at this season when Christians are thankful that God came personally to meet their needs.

P.S. My wife and I parted many years ago, back when such was frowned on even in liberal churches, and it caused difficulties in my ministerial career ...

... and she died, five years ago.

There is an opportunity available at my profile, should you wish to contact me privately ... as there is for many of the participants on Gardenweb.
