How Can I Open a .docx Document

Got a document I need to open that's a .docx document...but I can't open it. Help!

Do you have Microsoft Word? the .docx extension is used by Word 2007. I don't remember if it's used by Word 2010 as well.

You need a newer version of Word, I think from 2007 onward.

If it came as a docx document, then I think that the sender is using Word 2007, and forgot to save it in the old doc format and your word reader program can't read word 2007. I did the same thing sending a document to someone who didn't have W. 2007. I try to remember to save things I want to send in the old format, but it it easy to forget. Tell them to resend if possible. Possibly Open Office works for word 2007 too. Anyway, it is a handy thing to have on your P.C.

Two ideas: (1) In Word 2013, do a File>Open>Computer and Browse to the file. Click the drop-down arrow on the Open button and select Open and Repair: (2) For the DOC file, you should be able to see the text (no formatting, of course) by simply opening the file in a text editor, such as Notepad (this doesn't work for DOCX). Not that I know of. I have Microsoft Works and that's what I use to open .doc documents.

If you can as an alternative, ask you correspondent to send you a back exported copy in *.doc form. The only difference between these two is that new version files (*.docx) may make use of new formatting features not present in the *.doc version. If the new file did not use any extended features, then there will be no loss of formatting.

Jemdandy...I don't have a clue what a back exported copy is...and I know she wouldn't. She'd pretty new to computers.lol

What she's trying to send me is an order sheet she made. Her husband is making/selling homemade (from scratch) cakes and pies for the holidays. She says it's a list of the kinds he's making and she "decorated" it with holly leaves or something.

That is what I have been going through for the last 2 hours. I bought a new PC and there was no word processor on it and none of the free software would open my documents. I had to buy MS Office Home and Student because MS Works has been phased out. I put a shortcut to MS Word on my desktop, then right clicked on the file I wanted to open and chose "open with" and followed the path to the short cut. It warned me that the layout may change, but I can edit it easier than retyping the documents. That worked on all of the documents except the ones I had set up in data base in works. I am going to have to list all of my movies and books again, but this time I will do it in word, not data form.

I too often have problems opening 'stuff' folks send me. I often waste a lot of time chasing things before maybe, or maybe not getting it opened.

This happened to me a while back. I think I down loaded something to open it. I think it was #1 on chemocurl's list.

You may ask the sender to resave it as a "SAVE AS 97-2003" file and resend to you.

I think if she saves her document in Rich Text format, you'll be able to open it in Works. Maybe that's covered in Chemocurl's link. If not, it's easy enough to try.

Country, Here's the steps for what your friend should do:

1. Open the original document (not the copy that she attached in her email to you).
2. Do a File, Save As
3. When the new window opens, change the Format (3rd box down) to Word 97-2004 Document(.doc)
4. Click Save button.
5. Create a new email to you and attach the version that has the .doc extension.

Voila! You'll have a form that you can open.

Morning! Thanks for that info Patser! I'm going to email those instructions to her!

I did go tot to the link Chemocurl posted and using #3 submitted it to both docx converter and Zamzar. Had emails from both, with the file converted,when I got up this morning. Zamzar wanted $$ to download the file (nope..not THAT important to ME..lol) I was able to open the one from docx converter...but I'm not sure I'm see it the way she created it. Something is wrong with her printer, so she's wanting me to ptint it for her...but I've got to make sure it looks like she's expecting it to look!

very easy to handle use zamzar online converter it will convert that docx to what ever format you want that you can utilize.

If you can open regular .doc files then I would select that option from the list to convert it to.

Do what raven said. Zamzar.com has saved my butt a lot the past couple of years. It converts the file to whatever format you tell it to and emails it to you in that format.

I went clicked the link that Zamzar emailed me, but got some kind of popup saying my conputer was at risk...and then it started that fake scan!

Since I had a headache from messing with it...and she had a headache from messing with it...we gave up! I just re-did the flyer for her..on MY computer!! lol
